Mulberry handbags... worth the money??

I have wanted a mulberry for years and years DH has been working ridiculous hours recently and so has said to treat myself.

I will likely go for the Bayswater or Alexa but I have heard that the quality isn't what it once was. I would hate to spend all that money (its a massive once on a lifetime treat for me) just to be disapointed.

Has anyone got any experiences or opinions on whether they are still worth the money?

Mmm. I have a Mitzi hobo, bought from Bicester Village, which takes a proper beating every day and is fine after five years. I also have a little Prairie satchel bought second-hand about seven years ago which has stood up to not only its previous owner and I but also my kids playing dress up with it. They're pretty robust, age gracefully and smell lush : )

I like Orla Kiely's stuff too, one of her massive oilskin totes is still a decent swimming/ beach/ kidcrap bag after eight years and a ten year old leather reversible bag has had its handles replaced once.

I love beautiful bags.I have a good sized collection of designer bags. I probably am quite materialistic but I don't care, its makes me so very happy Grin

I could have written the post by seaoflove. Six or so years ago I could justify £500 on a classic design, but not now. They're taking the hand with their pricing structure, big style. And it's cost them plenty of loyal customers. They've tried to make some moves towards courting my sort of demographic back with their latest range- this tote is £595, a snip in comparison to the Bayswater, Alexa, et al. But they're hardly 'wearable' colours.

For the money they're asking for the traditional designs I would be getting one from YSL or something.

It is such a shame. I think they just got a bit greedy. It used to be a British institution.

GingerbreadBaubles · 16/03/2015 12:56

I'd treat myself to Louis Vuitton my Damier Ebene Neverfull is 6 years old, worn to death still looks new. I think Mulberry in their quest for elite status have lost their way and no way are would I pay £895 for one. But it's what you love that matters and if Mulberry is your love go for it and enjoy it!

I have the LV Babylon, the predecessor to the never full, 20 years !!!!!!
She's still beautiful.
Cost per wear ladies Wink

They did get greedy. They obviously wanted to place themselves up with the super premium brands, but charging nearly twice as much for the same bags isn't the way to do it.

I actually think they wanted to get a new target market as well. The Mulberry section of the Purse Forum used to mainly have women in the 35-55 age category. Now it's full of girls in their 20s who feel able to drop £1000 on a bag.

Me, I collect second hand Mulberries from time to time on eBay, never paying more than £180 in the main. It's much more satisfying, and I prefer the older designs anyway.

Sea of love, you're on purse forum too?
waves ***??

My Mulberry is coming up twenty years old and seems to get better with age I am sad if the quality has gone down hill because I love mine.

DH bought me a new weekend bag for Christmas after my old one died and we got one from Tustings. I absolutely love it.

Small company and great products.

seaoflove · 16/03/2015 13:23

More of a lurker than a poster, Jackie Smile I'm really not that interested in the current season designs, or the prices.

florascotia · 16/03/2015 15:34

Would second Tusting (www.tusting.co.uk). Wonderful quality.

Also Pickett (www.pickett.co.uk) Very, very expensive, but good value-per-wear if purchased in sales. I've had good customer service from them.

redrubyindigo · 16/03/2015 16:00

Flora

I found Tustings at the Festival of Speed. Where did you find them?

Never heard of them before that.

Pusspuss1 · 16/03/2015 16:23

Not worth paying the price for a new one. I have two Bayswaters, both real and both off ebay for about half price. Look very carefully at the pictures to make sure you're getting the real thing. I love mine and use them all the time.

Carpaccio · 16/03/2015 16:30

If you want to buy secondhand, then the Mulberry section on the purse forum has an authentication thread - they are really good there.

If buying from the outlets, then consider if you're happy with the subs - there are quite a few of them, and Mulberry do not repair these as far as I'm aware. There are normal, older bags and special outlet editions which are not subs and they can be repaired.

Also, the sales online and in store are usually okay - you can get 50% off if lucky, but only on certain colours or styles, not the classic oak and black colours (I haven't seen chocolate for a while so not sure if that still exists). They usually sell out quickly though.

florascotia · 16/03/2015 16:33

Nowhere so exciting, I'm afraid. I've seen them around. They have a website!

Bunbaker · 16/03/2015 16:40

I'm not convinced by the showing your status to the world argument. Only people who recognise Mulberry bags will be aware that you are carrying one.

People like me, who are totally brand unaware, will either think "oh that's a nice bag" or not notice at all.

So much you have bumped loads of zombie threads to 'advertise' your bags 🙄
