Decent coverage BB cream or light foundation for dry skin?

MissAMinton · 12/03/2015 21:19

I'm rosy with a few noticeable hormonal spots and need decent all day coverage but everything I try makes my dry skin look really flaky and horrid.

I exfoliate once a week with a Philosophy exfoliating wash, I moisturise every morning with Dr Haushka Rose day cream but my skin is always quite dry.

I like to wear light make for work but I'm really struggling to find a base. At the moment I'm using a L'Occitaine Bb cream but the coverage is a bit light, I've tried various Clinique and cheaper Maybelline ones but everything leaves me looking a bit caked without providing a decent effect.

Any ideas?

I'm also in the middle of nowhere so somewhere with online samples would be fab.

I am one of many people on who rave about Boots Botanics BB cream. Good coverage, moisturising and bargainous.

queenbrunhilda · 12/03/2015 22:48

Sorry, there's a missing 'here' in that sentence.

DaisyRaine90 · 12/03/2015 22:54

BB cream is great. I use a really light one I think it's from Maybeline (sp?) it's green when you put it on, but then alters to your skin tone. I think the green cancels out the red pigments in the skin. X

I've been experimenting of late. I've just got Bare Minerals Prime Time BB primer cream. I really like it. I've tried a few BB creams, and nothing else has suited.

I also have (or thought I had?) dry skin, specifically around the edges and the tip of my nose, and T-zone. After reading about dehyrdated skin, it struck a chord with me.

I've now got 2 products which have made a massive difference to my skin! Make up remover is www.boots.com/en/No7-Beautiful-Skin-Melting-Gel-Cleanser-for-Normal-Dry-Skin-150ml_1245016/ which leaves silky smooth skin. Then moisturising with www.superdrug.com/Neutrogena/Neutrogena-Deep-Moisture-Lotion-400ml/p/894359#.VQIaY47kf54

I've been using them for 5 days and there isn't a scrap of dry flaky crap on my face! Very happy! I've had years of scrubbing skin off my face!

MissAMinton · 13/03/2015 07:22

Great, thanks all.

Another question, CC cream is colour corrective so could you layer it with BB cream or foundation?

I was reading about Bobbi Brown BB cream and the Smashbox one, has anyone tried those?

I'll definitely look at the dehydrated skin thing as that may be a factor too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try everything as my skin looks so dull all the time.

My Mum who is very old swears by Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted.
I have Bobbi Brown BB cream and would not recommend it. I use it over a good moisturiser and it dries quickly when you apply it, has a tendency to go streaky while applying and TBH I only use it in summer to give a high SPF (35) when I am outdoors exercising.

You could think about treating your dry skin from the inside- plenty of water, good fats in avocado( I eat 3 a week), oily fish, almonds, brazils, walnuts- all high in Vit E and good fats- olives, olive oil, etc.

Sugar causes skin inflammation/ ageing and can exacerbate dryness and spots.

Boots No 7 do some quite nice foundations - they do a couple that are very light texture- but I'd also recommend Bobbi Brown Skin foundation, the bottle or the stick, Clinique Even Better, Clinique Perfectly Real, and Olay moisturisers are better than you;d believe- I recently swapped from Clinique @ £40 a pot to Olay regenerist 3-point which is about £15 on Amazon.

pinkfrocks · 13/03/2015 08:15

ps- B Brown used to do a try and return on their foundations if you bought online- so worth looking out for this- not sure if it's on offer now. They will refund if you don't like it.

MissAMinton · 13/03/2015 09:15

That's a shame about the Bobbi Brown, I'll have a look online though about the returns.

I used to have quite bad rosacea when I was younger and it seems to have come back with a vengeance now I've got the mirena coil (but only on the right side of my face strangely) and it's really hard to disguise without looking as if I'm wearing a mask of heavy make up.

I've cut out red wine but may need to try a more drastic diet. I do love avocados!

I really like the Liz Earle Sheer Skin Tint. See this thread too for ideas:-

maytheforcebewithme · 13/03/2015 09:21

Epic fail there.

MrsMarigold · 13/03/2015 09:32

I alternate between boots botanics, Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser and Laura Mercier Moisture Supreme foundation.

Cuppatea14 · 13/03/2015 09:33

Pricey, but trish Mcevoy BB cream is gorgeous. It does come in a huge tube and lasts for ages (my last tube is 9 months and counting). Very light, goes on smoothly, doesn't nestle in the fine lines.

pinkfrocks · 13/03/2015 11:52

I don't rate BBs at all on my limited experience. They are a jack of all trades IMO- if you need moisture use a good moisturiser. If you need cover, use foundation but don't mix both as in a BB.

OP take a look at Laura mercier tinted moisturiser which is supposed to be the dog's bollocks, B Brown tinted moisturiser- better than her BB- and maybe think about using a good quality concealer on your red areas and not expect a foundation to do it all- a heavy covering foundation will often look caked.

MissAMinton · 13/03/2015 12:47

Pinkfrocks a concealer? I thought they were those rubbishy things I used to get from Rimmel when I was 17! They've moved on a bit I imagine then. How can I be 37 and so shit at make up!

So brands aside, I should be going for a moisturiser, then concealer on specific areas then a light foundation? I've always just done the one stop shop of tinted moisturiser but it's just not cutting it these days.

I'm going to have to brave John Lewis aren't I? I just get so flustered by the choice

You sound like me. Foundation and even BB cream goes patchy and dry on me. I've worked out my skin is dehydrated. I've been using the Vichy aqualia serum under a moisturiser morning and night and I have noticed a difference, no patchy dry skin after a day at work last night. Only been using it for two days, hopefully it will continue. Bare minerals are doing a free sample of their new liquid foundation, if you use facebook you can get the voucher through their page. I rate the laura Mercier tinted moisturiser but it's expensive. I use the boots botanic bb cream at the moment, I also have one from marks and Spencer's that I like, it's from their autograph range. I've heard good things about the boots no 7 super light foundation so I might try that soon.

pinkfrocks · 13/03/2015 16:03

I suggest you get a nice moisturiser that is not greasy but sinks in- I really like Olay Regenerist 3 point (£15 Amazon) or any of the Olay stuff is good- except the liquidy pink lotion- the 7 signs of ageing is okay too - much better than the packaging suggests.

I think you need to use perhaps a serum, then a moisturiser then your foundation, put the concealer on the bits that are still a bit red last of all and blend in - Bobbi Brown creamy concealer is good, Clinique do some nice ones, DD swears by a MAC concealer rather than B Brown, and if you have an oily T zone then you need a tiny bit of translucent loose powder.

rosiepinkcheeks · 13/03/2015 17:20

La Roche Posay Rosaliac CC Creme is very good for redness prone skin and has spf30.

MissAMinton · 13/03/2015 19:46

Pinkfrocks I'll try that way round - my Dr Haushka rose moisturiser is lovely but I may need a heavier one for nighttime.

I can't see names as I'm using the app but thanks for other tips, I'll look out for RP and the Bare Minerals FB page

Maytheforcebewithme, I've just got the Liz Earle Balm as a free gift with my skin care order. I'm finding it a bit shines/disappears quickly. Any tips? I have it in shade 2 Beige.

YourBubzYourRulzHun · 13/03/2015 21:57

I have the LRP one, it smells lovely but I find it too thick. I used it on holiday for the SPF and in place of foundation but not since, so if you want to give it a try PM me your address and I'll send it on!

DaisyRaine90 · 14/03/2015 13:20

I use the L'oriel CC cream for redness for every day use as it corrects the redder tones in my skin but is so light you can wear it if you get sweaty running around, at the gym or Doing jobs. A bit of concealer and highlighter if my eyes are really dark from lack of sleep, and some bronze and/or blush and you look made up, but it doesn't clog my pores which is great :D x
