Calling all fashionistas to style this dress for DD's prom (edgy not gypsy wedding please!)

DD (16) has been stalking this Maje dress for her prom for months and has eventually found it, worn once for a fraction of the price.
She has asked me the experts of Mumsnet how to style it, she thinks the ankle boots maybe aren't right in June.
She's petite with very long curly brown hair.

Does your dd know about the student room forum, there's a big style and beauty section on there and a lot of prom talk at the minute.

LadyLoxley · 22/02/2015 19:42

Love the dress. Bet she feels a million dollars in it. Hope she has a great time at the prom. As for accessories - can't go wrong with black or possibly a navy bag and shoes. Definitely needs a necklace or will look 'naked' in photos if they are just head and shoulder shots.

At risk of being boring, I'd wear (if much younger and much thinner) black suede wedge sandals - it's a long night and I've picked up on 3 occasions and seen ouchy feet - with bare legs or opaque tights. Wd make my legs look beautifully skinny! Dress will no longer seem short. Get someone to make a choker you love and up do. But a messy one.

So being a group of mothers makes us less fashionable?? I didn't realise i lost my sense of style and "coolness" the day i gave birth.

loving some of the suggestions on here, especially the suggestions for a choker (and love the folksy cuff!!!)

Datahub · 22/02/2015 23:09

to a teenager, most people over 30 are DEAD Wink

ToffeePenny · 22/02/2015 23:10

Multi strap heels would keep the ankle boot silhouette (like the blue pic below) or she could go for a flatter but knee-high 'gladiator' strappy boot sandal.

Unless she has long legs I'd stay away from bold colour on the shoes and carry a contrasting bag or add contrast colour to her hair instead.

Who said we are all over 30? Im not, and there's nothing to suggest that everyone else on this thread is.

herecomesthsun · 23/02/2015 06:00

winged sandals?

MimiSunshine · 23/02/2015 11:27

How about nude shoe boots? I have a pair that I love for summer nights out plus they really lengthen the leg.

These may be too high for her, but could look great with the dress and the clutch posted earlier.

I think its great that your DD wants something more fun than the Hollywood red carpet dresses I see my cousins friends in.

burnishedsilver · 23/02/2015 11:44

I'm well over 30 so I suppose I should be suggesting hotter shoes and thermal underwear.

AmberNectarine · 23/02/2015 11:54

Id be tempted to go big with a dress like this - open toed shoe boots, possibly studded. Or maybe even very pointy courts fishnets? I'd wear leather half gloves with it like this.

Lj8893 · 23/02/2015 11:56

mimi i love those!!

jeee · 23/02/2015 12:00

I'm both ancient and unstylish - but if your dd is of the edgy variety I would have thought that DMs would be quite a nice choice with that dress.

But that could be because it's what would have been worn by the trendier types when I was at university aeons ago.

MimiSunshine · 23/02/2015 13:31

Lj8893 me too. Some of the shoes on that website are a bit questionable but I like those and a couple of others, plus they are teen budget friendly

FauxFox · 23/02/2015 15:53

iron fist peeptoes? You are only 16 once after all Grin

PrimalLass · 23/02/2015 16:26

Cheaper version of the gorgeous LK Bennet shoes above.

The girls at our school often wear converse or new balance trainers in the right colour under long dresses! Funky and comfy so they're not barefoot holding their heels after 20 mins.
