What really works?. I'm shiny by noon Sad

Fluffycloudland77- I wish I could give you a recommendation. Alas, I'm in the same boat too. I spend money on products which promise to keep me matte all day, and then I look in the mirror at noon and I'm an oil slick. I don't fancy having to take blotting paper and powder everywhere with me. I'm happy to pay up to £30 if something does what it says it does. Hopefully someone will be along soon...

I've got combination skin which can be oily at times. I use Lanacane gel, it's an anti chaffing gel, but it works really well as a primer and I don't find it makes my skin oily. It costs less than a tenner on Amazon.

CookieLady · 22/02/2015 09:13

P.S. I'm not a loon for using an anti chaffing gel as a primer there are plenty of other people on the 'net who recommend it. Grin

LordEmsworth · 22/02/2015 09:15

I use Becca mattifying primer, my skin is oily/combination and this really keeps the shine away all day

LipstickandHeels · 22/02/2015 09:16

I have used the smash box primer, which is ok. I'm currently using YSL ink fusion foundation that does seem to be doing a good job ( you don't need a primer with it). I'm also using Clarins lotus oil in the evenings.

I have to confess, it seems like the holy grail to find effective products! Good luck and I hope you find a primer that suits you.

whodrankmycoffee · 22/02/2015 10:20

I use the one from number seven and then use the rose setting powder from jurlique on top of foundation or tinted moisturiser

I have oily acne prone skin Envy but the up side is that the oil slick that is my face has preserved me no lines or wrinkles Grin

Boots no 7 airbrush primer is pretty good, keeps me matt for longer than anything else I've tried. I think no 7 also do a mattifying primer, which I'll try next time.

rosiepinkcheeks · 22/02/2015 13:55

I have yet to find a primer that lasts all day and does not dry my face out. The Oil-free Smashbox primer is good but doesnt last all day on me - probably about 4-5 hours on me. Benefit porefessional, again is good but shine breaks through on my face about 4 hours later - though you can dab a little on over your make up (it doesnt smudge make up) and it takes the shine away. However I have in addition to using primers also started using Tarte finishing powder and this does work on me and keeps my face shine free.

If you are really oily-try Phillips Milk of Magnesia (unflavored version). It's cheap, it's not bad for your skin, and most important of all, it works.

Google for reviews or check on MakeupAlley.com.

PastPerfect · 22/02/2015 14:23

I use boots no 7 airbrush it's the best I've found so far.

Smokeyrobinson · 22/02/2015 17:04

Lanacane gel for me too - I find it very effective.

Flambola · 22/02/2015 17:30

Nothing works on me. I am extremely oily (shiny after 30 minutes). The best thing for me is a good skincare routine.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 22/02/2015 17:31

Becca and The Body Shop matte primer. Also try oil cleansing, my oily skin was actually dehydrated and oil cleansing has helped tons

Sparkletastic · 22/02/2015 17:33

Agree that primers don't really do much - it's more about your skin care regime and serum. Do you use La Roche Posay Effaclair?

ruddynorah · 22/02/2015 17:36

I used to have very oil shiny skin. I started the oil cleansing method 7 years ago, best thing ever. I no longer have open pores, shiny t zone, dry patches, blackheads or spots. I don't use primer or moisturiser. My skin only needs a little under eye concealer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/02/2015 17:41

Ocm makes me very spotty. I have sensitive, oily yet dry skin. I use effaclar.

Lanacane has made me break out on my cheeks which I never do normally.

I'm going to try the milk of magnesia first.

I have very oily skin, I use becca mattifying primer. It's really good.

LovelyBranches · 22/02/2015 23:04

I have oily skin. Shu uemura under based mousse is exactly what you need in your life. I love it. Your make up stays longer, skin is flawless before foundation and you don't shine.

MissBlake · 23/02/2015 03:23

I have tried endless primers before finding the flower perfection primer by bourjois. This stuff is brilliant, it mattifies, evens out my skin tone, reduces pore size and provides a silky smooth base to work with. Best of all, my make up now stays put for a full day when before it was sliding of after a few hours thanks to my oily skin. I use this with my bourjois 123 perfect and maxfactor whipped cream foundations. For me, it really is a miricle product. While I have nothing bad to say about the product itself, I have issues with the amount of product for the price -7mls for £9, 99 (I think) is really quite expensive. Despite this I still think anyone with oily skin should try it, its by far the best primer I have tried, and I have tried heaps!

violetbunny · 23/02/2015 05:32

Shu Uemura Poreaser is fantastic for oily skin, it's a lightweight mousse which absorbs oil without making the skin look flat or dull.

Clean and Clear oil blotting sheets are also a godsend and available fairly cheaply in bulk from eBay. Also look into MAC prep & prime translucent powder, together these three products are my shine fighters.

footyfan · 23/02/2015 06:30

Sounds like I have the same skin as you.

I've tried loads of different primers, and haven't found any that work all day. I find a translucent finishing powder much more effective.

louwn · 23/02/2015 06:45

Watching with interest as have just come off the pill hoping to TTC in a few months, I had forgotten that the pill was keeping some of my oilyness at bay! As someone up the thread said though - oily skin tends to age well. My mum is 60 with basically no wrinkles....if you are looking for an upside : )

louwn · 23/02/2015 06:47

I do love the kleenex oil absorbing sheets too - but would obviously prefer to keep some of the oil at bay in the first place. I use effaclar too, and a separate spf 30 (boots soltan face one)...am wondering if the sunscreen isn't helping. It does state it doesn't block pores though.

EleanorRigby89 · 23/02/2015 07:00

The benefit porefessional primer works well for me. I didn't like the no7 one.

louwn · 23/02/2015 07:01

Have you also tried a make up setting spray? I have used urban decay before but got the superdrug MUA one at the moment which is only a fiver. It does seem to stop oil coming through as much. I apply after powder.
