Naice fake diamond stud earrings... Yes or no?

First world problem here! I recently lost a diamond stud earring. It was insured but still not ideal to lose it for many reasons. I'm now faced with (a) forking out the insurance money (and then some...) for one diamond to match the remaining earring and get a replacement earring made up or (b) buying a pair of fake studs from Carat London or Diamonfire and saving the balance towards a lovely sapphire right hand ring don't tell DH

I'm strongly leaning towards option (b).... I can wear the earrings without worrying plus it's lots and lots cheaper! And the carat london stuff really looks so good. Problem is, I don't wear "fake" jewellery. I wear very little jewellery but I do have a nice watch and a nice diamond engagement ring. Part of me feels that wearing a pair of fake diamond studs would cheapen my other jewellery or somehow make it all look fake. On the other hand, I somehow feel that earrings might be an acceptable thing to have as fakes given their susceptibility to getting lost.

Any views? I know that I'm in an incredibly fortunate position btw and that this is a nice problem to have....

I lost a diamond stud. Claimed on the insurance. House Insurance premiums went up for 3 years or so. Lost another diamond stud. Learnt my lesson.

Went to Monsoon. Bought sparkly shit. Occassionally by other sparkly shit from Sainsburys/M&S etc etc Do not feel any worse in life for not having a grand on my earlobes. Feel better for it not really mattering when a £2.50 sparkly earring got knocked under the bed and is there "somewhere".

JoMunroTriesAgain · 20/02/2015 21:34

Oh and I got the first "leftover" earring turned into a necklace. Still got that and wear it.

MaraThonbar · 20/02/2015 21:39

The Carat stuff is very nice indeed. The trick is not to go for something too big, but to keep to a size that would be plausible if they were real.

Honestly, I think you'd need a jeweller's loupe and a lot of expertise to spot that they're fakes, and no-one is going to have that at conversation distance while they're in your ears Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/02/2015 21:39

Costco diamond studs (not all of them but some) have the screw back post.

Might be worth considering if you want to replace with real?

Or if you go for CZ , a beautifully set small carat stone in white gold would be nice.
I wouldn't consider a real diamond for earrings but I would for a ring.

I have three piercings so I can wear the odd earring Grin

Twinklestein · 20/02/2015 21:43

I'd say replace and get a fake pair. Save the real ones for every day.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/02/2015 21:54

Get the studs & a naice sapphire. I love my pink sapphire.

It's pale pink. I know that's not as fashionable but I like it.

Lucysaysno · 20/02/2015 22:09

That's the response I was hoping for! Yes losing another earring fills me with dread...we went through bins, Hoover bags to find the one that I lost but to no avail.

Totally agree Mara that in order to be credible, I need fake earrings that aren't too big. My old pair were 0.4 carat each and I always felt that they were slightly too small but it was fine because they were real! Do you think I should get a pair of 0.5 carat earrings? Would 0.75 carat be credible? My engagement ring is large (2carat - it was an heirloom) and so it wouldn't be very unexpected for me to have 0.75 carat earrings... But I'm a terrible liar and won't be able to field comments on my earrings without blurting out the fact that they are fake!

Fake studs and sapphire ring - you will look down at your hand every day and smile. So easy to lose an earring - my real studs stay in the safe which is stupid (and complete waste of money )

MaraThonbar · 20/02/2015 23:23

Lucy I reckon that most people can comfortably go to 1 carat for studs, unless perhaps they had very small earlobes or very short hair. Remember that most people are going to see them from a few feet away and that they will probably be at least partly obscured by your hair! I think it's also easier to wear bigger stones in round, brilliant cuts - something about the round stone reflecting the shape of the earlobe - rather than square, emerald cuts.

Cantdecideondinner · 20/02/2015 23:32

I have 0.7 studs and they're the perfect size, big enough to be noticed and small enough not to look fake. I also have a good (very plain and simple men's rolex) watch and a similar size engagement ring to you so it all fits in well I think.

Lucysaysno · 20/02/2015 23:33

Thanks Mara. That's v helpful. I have small lobes so, bearing in mind your observations, I will go for the 0.75 but will ditch the idea of the 0.5 ct. thanks for your help!

Thanks Cantdecide! We sound like kindred spirits when it comes to jewellery!

I lost a diamond stud the other day. Or rather 'diamond' - it came from Argos and the knack is simply getting one of a size that might be real, in a simple setting. £19:99 for a new pair to replace.

I really doubt anyone is staring at my ears trying to work out the exact nature and quality of the stone.

noddyholder · 20/02/2015 23:36

I have a diamonique pair and they are fine

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/02/2015 23:40

I can honestly say that I have never, ever examined anybody's ears to try to determine if their bling is real or not. Get the fake ones.

lurkingaround · 21/02/2015 00:06

Get fake. Absolutely for earrings - fake (unless you're kayko in cash). No one, but no one will notice. Earrings are way too easy to lose.

LadyB49 · 21/02/2015 00:10

So many people have admired my diamond earrings, set in white gold. £3.50 in Asda. No worries. My rings are all real.

I only take fake stuff on holiday.

diggerdigsdogs · 21/02/2015 00:46

I second the carat stuff. I have a ring from there that looks like my wedding ring and I wear it when we travel. I'm thinking of getting some earrings too so I can put my real earrings in the safe without worrying about them every time I wear them!

Fabulassie · 21/02/2015 01:30

Nobody can tell what is in your ears. They're just glittery shiny things that give a bit of sparkle.

The only two reasons I can think of for having real diamond studs is knowing that you're wearing real diamonds, if that matters to you, and their potential value as an investment, which would be best suited to something you keep in a safe and not in holes in your ears.

ZaraW · 21/02/2015 06:40

Another vote for Carat I had some of their "diamond" stud earrings for years until I lost one. I eventually invested in real ones but the Carat ones were fab I loved them.

Eastpoint · 21/02/2015 06:53

Much easier not to have real ones. People will assume they are real & they won't look any different.

bryonyelf · 21/02/2015 08:31

Diamonique on qvc is pretty good.

twobambinos · 21/02/2015 11:17

I think it sounds like from your op that you wont ever be happy wearing the fake.
You wear very little jewellery why not go for the real thing if that's what you want. At least the insurance is taking a bit of a sting out of it, it could be worse.

Twinklestein · 21/02/2015 12:20

Save the real ones for every day

Clearly I mean save the real ones for best, and use the fake for everyday.

Twinklestein · 21/02/2015 12:23

Personally, it would really annoy me only have one of a pair.
