Naice fake diamond stud earrings... Yes or no?

First world problem here! I recently lost a diamond stud earring. It was insured but still not ideal to lose it for many reasons. I'm now faced with (a) forking out the insurance money (and then some...) for one diamond to match the remaining earring and get a replacement earring made up or (b) buying a pair of fake studs from Carat London or Diamonfire and saving the balance towards a lovely sapphire right hand ring don't tell DH

I'm strongly leaning towards option (b).... I can wear the earrings without worrying plus it's lots and lots cheaper! And the carat london stuff really looks so good. Problem is, I don't wear "fake" jewellery. I wear very little jewellery but I do have a nice watch and a nice diamond engagement ring. Part of me feels that wearing a pair of fake diamond studs would cheapen my other jewellery or somehow make it all look fake. On the other hand, I somehow feel that earrings might be an acceptable thing to have as fakes given their susceptibility to getting lost.

Any views? I know that I'm in an incredibly fortunate position btw and that this is a nice problem to have....

I have fakes from Heavenly Necklaces. even my colleague who loves her diamonds (and always wears a serious value) couldn't tell until I told her they were fake (though obv don't stand up to really close inspection)

If you want a pared down classic look, then buy the diamonds (with the insurance money) that you really want , and forgo the Right Hand Ring (which IMO, look a bit Essex. I live in Essex so I'm allowed to say that Wink )

Lucysaysno · 21/02/2015 13:38

Interesting about the right hand ring! I didn't know that about Essex! So is it considered less Essex to only wear rings on left ring finger (if married) and nowhere else (genuine question)?

I'm really encouraged by all the responses especially the good reviews of carat. I know that it seems from my op that I won't be happy with fakes but actually I'm really coming round to the idea - for earrings only (though I understand the use of them for travel jewellery). I think I'll go for it!!

I always wear fake studs now bitter experience but DH had a diamond we owned made into a short necklace for Christmas. The fake studs look really obvious when I wear the real necklace.

angeltulips · 21/02/2015 13:50

Personally id get the diamond replaced and get some proper screw backs made so it doesn't happen again.

But this is why I alternate between diamond studs (normal everyday) and pearl studs (For holidays/anywhere where I have to wear a helmet etc). The latter I can lose without any issues as they're not as expensive to replace.

ImperialBlether · 21/02/2015 14:40

I think you won't be happy wearing fakes. Why not do as a pp says and have the other earring made into a pendant necklace?

Lambzig · 21/02/2015 14:44

I have 1 carat real and have worn them every day for twelve years. I don't think you will like the fakes.

However, I can't bear fake or faux anything, so would choose a plain gold over fake diamonds if I lost them. So it might just be me.

noddyholder · 21/02/2015 16:29

You can't tell the difference though I don't think people would know what was real or fake. I have a tiny fake diamond on a really thin silver band and people always comment on it and assume its real but it was a fiver at teh market

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2015 16:32

To be honest, I would assume that they were fakes anyway.

Fozzleyplum · 21/02/2015 16:32

I have a stonkingly wealthy friend who loves diamonds (and has some lovely inherited pieces), but is of the view that jewellery is a poor investment. She finds a piece of diamond jewellery she loves, then has it replicated with CZ at a fraction of the price. Noone can tell which is fake.

If you're going to wear fake diamonds, the secret is to stick to a plausible size and make sure the settings are of equal quality to the real thing. Everyone assumes the gold and "diamond" earrings I wear are real. They cost £30 about 25 years ago.

BrandyAlexander · 21/02/2015 16:58

I think the Carat fakes are really good. I would say get them if you want the sapphire ring more than you want the earrings. I definitely second the suggestion of getting the spare earring made into a pendant. Easily done and nine too expensive way to still get enjoyment out of them.

I have a lot of jewelry both eye wateringly expensive diamonds as well as Carat fakes and crystals. I mix and match it all. I also have fake and real versions of the same thing. I love my Oasis diamanté watch as much as the Gucci watch that it is copying.

midnightmoomoo · 21/02/2015 18:06

Why not have the remaining stud made into a ring?

Twinklestein · 21/02/2015 18:17

I don't have fake studs, but I have studs that are made of small diamond chips for every day, as they're much cheaper.

I think you can tell instantly if diamond earrings are real or fake, however I don't give a shit.

I tried Heavenly Necklaces and found everything looked disappointingly cheap, I've not tried other places.

Apatite1 · 21/02/2015 18:31

I'm very good at picking up fakes, but I don't hesitate to wear them abroad as I don't want to be worrying about jewellery on holiday. I wear a fake 3 carat solitaire ring abroad, but a real one at home (I don't wear any other jewellery or watch daily). It's very obvious what is fake when they are next to each other, but not when worn apart. I think fake diamond studs will not be scrutinised closely enough for it to be a problem, so I'd go for it.

FringeDivision · 21/02/2015 19:51

Have you considered semi precious stones for earrings? Not fake, but not gut wrenchingly expensive to replace.
I wear garnets set in white gold. They weren't cheap but were much less than a diamond pair. I gave up on very expensive earrings after I lost one of my mum's emerald earrings.

carrie74 · 22/02/2015 09:13

I've lost my diamond earrings 3 times [sobs], claimed on the insurance each time. The last time I got my new earrings on the insurance, I had the posts converted to screw on backs. These babies aren't going anywhere.

BTW, if you do claim on the insurance, my insurers made me send the single one to them, so couldn't keep it and turn it into something (of course if you don't claim, you will have this option).

When I bought this most recent pair, I was lucky enough to go to the jewellers on a 20% off day, so with a bit of spare cash, I also bought a pair of CZ set in white gold to wear everyday. I never wear them. I don't wear much jewellery (diamond studs, wedding and eng rings, a diamond necklace H gave me on our wedding day 12 years ago, plus a silver Tiffany necklace my friends bought me for my 40th), so I wear my nice stuff all the time to enjoy it.

hauntedhenry · 22/02/2015 09:33

Get fake ones and have the other earring made into a necklace. Charlotte Gainsbourgh wears a lovely short chain with a diamond on it, looks lovely.

mrsrhodgilbert · 22/02/2015 09:34

Another one recommending Carat. I got earrings a couple of years ago, I think they're 0.75 but the rest of my jewellery is real and I have a good watch. I think they look very realstic against real diamonds and I don't walk around holding my fingers up to my ears so no one gets a chance to look closely. It certainly takes away the sorry of losing one.

GerbilsAteMyCat · 22/02/2015 09:42

Yeegads! Those carat earrings are pricier than the (small) diamond studs I have.
