How can I get shiney hair without dying it?

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 13:02

I'm late forties with dark brown shoulder length hair. Fine but thick. I henna occasionally to cover greys in fringe, hardly any other greys.
I'm a bit fed up with how dull my hair has become over the years. I want some shine but don't want to colour. I'd this possible?
Any products out there that can do that?
Thanks Smile

Aussie spray on leave in conditioner

Tis the dog's

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 13:05

Oh really? It doesn't weigh the hair down? I'm off to the shops later ( rubs hands) thanks !

Nope, no weighing down, is light as a feather, not greasy or yukky. Smells lush, bonus.

Hardly need any, don't spray on roots just the length, iyswim. Often on offer, I don't like any of their shampoos or traditional conditioners, too heavy.

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 13:10

There's more than one Aussie leave in conditioner, which one is the one you like?

Was about to recommend the exact same thing! It's fab Smile

DandyHighwayman · 19/02/2015 13:11

Hang on, will check.

Nb I am roughly your age. Not sure why that's relevant, huh.

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 13:11

Ah, must be the lightweight one thenGrin

Miracle hair insurance lightweight conditioning spray. Ignore the blurb about weak distressed hair, give it a whirl.

Henna will be making your hair look dull

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 13:18

Thanks
Oh, why would henna make my hair look dull? I thought it was supposed to add shine! I haven't actually hennard my whole head for years. Iftwas always super shiney when I did. I used the lush blocks.

I will get some and report back!

Gliss liquid silk (stuff in the pinky bottle) and a gentle blow dry works for me.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/02/2015 19:24

Gloss spray on shine works well.

There's special ranges now for older/grey hair. You could try one of them too.

Lots of vitamins and mineral in your diet makes a huge difference over time.

bigbuttons · 19/02/2015 21:54

fluffycloud which brand is that? I've looked up but can't find it!

Aussie miracle hair conditioner, towel dry and add argan oil to the ends. Once dried, a spray on oil not on hair but on hands and gently put through ends first.

This has been an absolute bloody revelation to me: www.boots.com/en/ORS-Olive-Oil-Sheen-Spray-455ml_870749/

I have struggled FOREVER with dull, coarse horse hair and since chancing upon this one day (there was just one in the bargain corner of my local chemist) I have never used anything else. It was designed for afro caribbean textures but if you use it VERY SPARINGLY it makes your hair incredibly soft, shiny and manageable. If you don't trust yourself to spray it directly on your hair, either spray onto hands and rub in or spray it onto just washed hair that's still fairly damp.

HeartbrokenWifeOfMillionaire · 20/02/2015 01:57

Cod liver oil supplement, take 2-3 of those tablets a day (the modern ones they don't taste funny and they won't make you smell of fish). Seriously. Works like a dream and no faffing with the externals.

avagosling · 20/02/2015 10:17

The really good hair oil by Fushi has been a life saver for me!

bigbuttons · 20/02/2015 14:12

I bought the wrong Aussie leave in. There were so many to chose from and i got confused!
I will take it back and swap.
The olive oil spray looks worth a go for sure, thanks
Fushi looks wonderful but a bit pricey for me. I do have most of those oils at home, perhaps I could make me a mix!
I have ordered some cod liver oil capsules.
Thank you all x

Agree with the CLO caps also linseeds and pumpkin seeds (omega 3). My hair is lovely and shiny because I use soft water to wash it.

If you don't already it's an idea to increase your intake of fruit (before a meal) and veg. plenty of salad etc. with olive oil and lemon juice dressing, not vinegar.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 20/02/2015 16:24

you could also try washing once every couple of weeks with a clarifying shampoo that wil lremove any build of of product, follow with a good conditioner or coconut oil left on overnight. works a treat for me when my usually shiney hair gets a bit dull.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/02/2015 21:46

Cold water rinse- as cold as you can bear.
Works wonders.
Our old shower used to run for 45 seconds on freezing when it was switched off, I stood there wincing but it really made my hair shiney.
(I'm also late 40s)
New shower doesn;t blast with cold

bigbuttons · 20/02/2015 22:13

I read a tip about doing the final rinse with bottled if you live in a very hard water area like me. There's no way I could stand under a cold shower! My blow drying technique leaves a lot to be desired too. I'll go for the cheap bottled water option!

Argan oil is amazing. My hair dresser got me some as the high street stuff isn't as good. I also use raw coconut oil from a health food shop as a hair mask. I was doing that twice a week as my hair was so dry but now hair is better I do it once a fortnight. You can leave it in all evening then wash before bed or sleep with a towel on your pillow and leave in over night. Brilliant results :)
