How can I get shiney hair without dying it?

I'm late forties with dark brown shoulder length hair. Fine but thick. I henna occasionally to cover greys in fringe, hardly any other greys.
I'm a bit fed up with how dull my hair has become over the years. I want some shine but don't want to colour. I'd this possible?
Any products out there that can do that?
Thanks Smile

I know you don't want to colour your hair, but I use a wash out toning shampoo from Superdrug which is really good. I have a few greys and it blends them in nicely until the next wash. It's very inexpensive too. I think it's called colour effects or similar. My hair definately looks shinier when I use it.

Thank you, I tried Argan oil and it really doesn't do anything!
Oh I like the sound of the super drug shampoo, will try some!

Coconut oil works wonders on my hair, I use it once a week.

Woahbodyforrrrm · 21/02/2015 12:50

I've been reading up about mustard oil and am definitely going to give it a try. An Asian friend of mine told me about it and it's very commonly used in Asia. It's very cheap but quite smelly apparently but given how many good things I've read about it I'm going to take the plunge.

bigbuttons · 21/02/2015 15:03

Yes, I was reading about mustard oil too, it is supposed to be amazing especially when infused with Amla.
I have loads of coconut oil I use it in most of my cooking, I'll try it on my hair as well!

I LOVE pure argan oil for a few 'fly away' hairs. I used to have very curly hair but not coarse so coconut would be too 'heavy' for it. Argan is a lovely light oil for my skin too.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/02/2015 16:14

is mustard oil the same as mustard seed oil?

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2015 16:17

Good dollop of vinegar in final rinsing water - especially good if you live in a hard water area.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/02/2015 16:19

Mustard oil is a great remedy for dry chapped lips when lip balms or chap sticks prove to be ineffective. Before going to bed, just apply one or two drops of mustard oil on your belly button and you will never have dry or chapped lips. This is an ancient remedy which has proven to be effective in moisturizing and softening your lips. now how does this work I wonder Grin

ppeatfruit · 21/02/2015 16:49

Bore Vinegar is good for colour too ( I use it in my laundry and it 's fab.).

Ainmnua · 21/02/2015 18:00

GirlsBrigade would you mind letting me know which shampoo it is?ive had a look on superdrug but can't find it. Thank you.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2015 18:06

(slight thread diversion) ppeat, I get extra-strong white vinegar and use it in laundry and for all sorts of other stuff too!

Use ordinary malt vinegar for hair - I understand that lemon juice is best for blondes though. 'Tis the acid in the final rinse that gets rid of the dulling effects of lime-heavy water and shampoo residue, apparently.

bluewisteria · 21/02/2015 18:11

Um ok diversion here, how much do you put in washing machine? And do you put it in the drawer or drum?

OP - Organix do a great hair range in boots, macadamia nut or coconut is great for the dry hair brigade. They also do a lovely coconut oil serum thing in a clear bottle which is uh-mazing!

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2015 18:16

I put a big glug of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer, instead of fabric conditioner. Clothes don't smell of it.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/02/2015 18:18

Also washing soda crystals in drum - then only use half as much powder (also in drum)

Sorry for diversion.

As you were.

Flowersandvegatables · 21/02/2015 18:18

My hair's similar & Philip Kingsley Elasticizer always works well for me. Some Mumsnetters don't like it though

ppeatfruit · 22/02/2015 12:13

Bore to continue the slight diversion, sorry bigbuttons! I LOVE white vinegar; down the loo, if it's hot it removes mould and calcareous water marks better than a steam cleaner. I sometimes put it in the drum and sometimes in the drawer! It always works extremely well. I also hate those stinking "softeners".

But not near my food!!

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/02/2015 13:47

Oooh, will try down the loo!

I use this extra strong and cheap as, er... chips (which I love with malt vinegar Grin)

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 22/02/2015 15:15

It's called Colour Effects, I think it will be the hair colourant section on the website. In store, it's with that type of product. The bottle size is really small and costs about a pound.

Ainmnua · 22/02/2015 16:37

Thanks GirlsBrigade I've just ordered some.
