What shampoo and conditioners do you use (particularly interested to know if your a hairdresser)

Hair dresser today (first time I seen this lady as my last one rudely without telling me left the salon), was telling me that shampoo on the shops is very very bad for hair and that it coats the hair and makes it have an unnatural effect? Obv the point was to sell me their mega expensive shampoo 17 bleeding quid a bottle but was it all for the sale or some truth?
What do you use?

I have fine hair. I have just started using swell shampoo and it's made a real difference.

rosiebt · 13/02/2015 16:38

Not a hairdresser!
Korres shampoo and conditioner has made a massive difference to my dry coloured hair. I just bought it on a whim as reviews were great online. It's £10 a bottle though... although have seen it with a third off in waitrose.
Smells really nice too

CMP69 · 13/02/2015 17:56

Which ever blonde one that is on special offer as it stops me being really ginger brings out the natural highlights in my hair (in my head anyway)

MsBojangles · 13/02/2015 22:11

Matrix smoothing range does a good job of taming my frizzy bush.

DavidTennantsBeard · 13/02/2015 22:34

So much bollocks spouted about this!

From what I can work out, silicones (which are in most conditioners inc Pantene etc) initially smooth the hair but after a few applications, weigh the hair down and leave it looking greasy.

Sodium laurel sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate are commonly used detergents/foaming agents In most shampoos. They are effective at removing silicone buildup (as above) but can cause irritation so best avoided by anyone with eczema.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 14/02/2015 02:46

Was your hairdresser referring to silicone? My hair was looking crap a few months back - oily but strawlike too - so I googled and found out it was caused by silicone in the products. (I was using Aussie shampoo.)

I've switched to the silicone/everything-free Herbal Essences one, and my hair looks good again!

Check the labels. Any ingredient ending in cone is silicone. Don't use those ones every day.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 14/02/2015 02:48

I miss the lovely Neutrogena shampoo that removed all the build up. That stuff was great. Pantene did a similar one for a while, but I can't find it anymore.

OriginalHugsy · 14/02/2015 13:13

Thanks for all your replies, I haven't seen or taken notice anyway, of silicone free shampoo but yesterday I saw the herbal essence naked volume Shampoo and bought that so I will see how that works on my hair. Had them on offer in asda for anyone who wants to know!

I've never seen Keratase in the shops- is it a salon only product?

OriginalHugsy · 14/02/2015 17:33

Not sure pink i couldn't see it in boots or asda when I was looking so I wonder if salon only?

Not a hairdresser.

I always use the Lush white shampoo bar.
2 or 3 last the year!

I never use conditioner. They leave my hair limp.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 14/02/2015 17:45

I use head and shoulders anti itch and then Aussie miracle minute/moist conditioner. If I don't use head and shoulders I get really bad dandruff.

I swim at least 4 times a week and always wash my hair after. I literally put the tiniest bit of conditioner on the ends and then run fingers through the length of my hair and rinse off.

My hair is quite fine and I'd love to try some volumising shampoos but would rather not be flaky so just use mousse and dry my hair upside down.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/02/2015 17:52

I use garnier ultimate blends the marvellous transformer or the sleek restorer. Got highlighted long hair. Also used tigi oatmeal and honey but expensive.

Have tried Aussie, naked etc and for some reason the naked especially just makes my hair feel dry. Sometimes use simple but can't remember what it was like.

What's most important to me is after hair, using a Schwarzkopf morrocan oil spray (cheapie in wilkos!), a spray root mouse and Aveda serum thing (light blue bottle). But can use anything leave in conditioner etc. Also like spray wax for volume if not using the mousse.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/02/2015 17:54

pink and original kerastese is sold mostly in salons or Sally's not seen it in boots or supermarkets. I think you can get it in TK Maxx sometimes too.

HelenaDove · 14/02/2015 18:16

I use Loreal Elvive Colour Protect and have done for years but have occasionally used Garnier Ultimate Blends The Colour Illuminator. I dont use conditioner. Hairdresser has told me i dont need to. Smile

Ive had two hairdressers tell me not to use Pantene. And a hairdresser tell me not to use Tresemme or Aussie. Hairdresser has also told me not to bother with the salon type shampoos named after "celeb" hairdressers as they are really no better and in some cases are of poorer quality.

WhatWouldBlairWaldorfDo · 14/02/2015 18:24

I use cheap shampoo...cirrently using aldi version of herbal essences, £1 a bottle. My hairdresser always says my hair is in fantastic condition. Although, to be fair all my family has super strong thick hair, even when its bleached etc it never feels damaged or dry. Ive been every colour/style and my hair never feels any different.

My hairdresser does consider pantene a swear word though :)

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 14/02/2015 18:37

Not a hairdresser but get products from the Matrix range for home.
My salon use it too but I buy it online when the sales are on.

missmartha · 14/02/2015 19:25

My hair is salon highlighted and the highlights last ages with Joico Colour Endure, which is sulphate free and works. I moisturise with Joico Moisture conditioner which makes my hair very shiny and soft. I get them from eBay, otherwise they can be £££.

Not a hairdresser.

I was once paid hush money by Herbal Essences as their hairspray stripped the paint of a bathroom shelf. I hope they've changed the formula, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

I use anything that is sulfate and salt free

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 15/02/2015 17:11

Urtekram Rose Shampoo and Jason Extra Gentle Kid's Conditioner. Many years of searching and experimenting have led me to this combination and I am finally really happy.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 15/02/2015 17:18

John Frieda blond shampoo and conditioner at the moment as it was three for two. Not a hairdresser. Others I use are Aussie, Treseme, and if I can find it Paul Mitchell. And Swim and Gym on swim days (plus swimming hat!)

My hairdresser says more important to buy a really good conditioner than spends loads on shampoo. She comes to my house and uses whatever I have! I am lucky in that I have long thick straight hair - the one "body part" I would not change in myself!

DustWitch · 15/02/2015 17:32

Not a hairdresser but I'm another who avoids sulphates and silicones. I've been using the curly girl method for six weeks now and my hair has never looked better. I don't use shampoo and haven't needed it but am co washing with Tresemme Naturals conditioner, styling with boots pink curl creme and doing to odd hair mask with coconut oil.

Juno321 · 15/02/2015 19:33

Dove nourishing oil care, by far the best I've used that goes for the pricey ones as well! I have very long thick hair and it makes it so soft and silky and never gets greasy!
