Hair dresser today (first time I seen this lady as my last one rudely without telling me left the salon), was telling me that shampoo on the shops is very very bad for hair and that it coats the hair and makes it have an unnatural effect? Obv the point was to sell me their mega expensive shampoo 17 bleeding quid a bottle but was it all for the sale or some truth?
What do you use?

Head and Shoulders and people are always commenting on my shiny hair. I buy it because I like the smell of apples.

OneLittleLady · 12/02/2015 19:49

usually something like Aussie or herbal essences. I've never bought expensive shampoos and conditioners and my hair is in great condition (after the great perm debacle of 2014) i don't wash my hair much though, maybe 2 or 3 times a week as it just doesn't need to be washed any more frequently and i find that the more i wash it, the quicker it gets greasy

StayGoldPonyBoy · 12/02/2015 19:49

Hairdresser here. I use Kevin Murphy because I get the litre bottles from work and it is really good but very pricey.

If I had to buy my own, I would use the tigi bedhead sulphate free one, available at B&B in a big pink bottle, or Kerastase. Supermarket/high street shampoos can be awful, but so can salon ones if they contain silicones and other nasties that can leave build up and strip colour.

I have fine hair so I go for light, sulphate free ones. A good sulphate free shampoo doesn't foam up but does clean effectively. You don't need the frothing agents to make your hair clean. Herbal Essences do a nice one now Smile

StayGoldPonyBoy · 12/02/2015 19:50

B&M*

tabulahrasa · 12/02/2015 19:51

I use diva curl...but that's because I'm trying the curly girl low poo thing.

QueenBean · 12/02/2015 19:55

Rhinestone that's what I do with mine with with conditioner, don't wash out and leave to dry naturally

Will try the Lush stuff, thanks for the tip Flowers

OneLittleLady · 12/02/2015 19:56

Staygoldponyboy if you mean the herbal essences naked one, thats the one i use and its really good. it smells nice too, a very gentle mint scent

PuppyMonkey · 12/02/2015 19:58

I've used every shampoo under the sun over the last 30 years, including various specialist ones for scalp psoriasis. Recently switched back to good old fashioned Vosene and my hair looks bloody brilliant on it. Grin

I've noticed a lot of hairdressers slag off Head and Shoulders, saying it strips your scalp, it's full of sulphates etc. funnily enough my hair looks quite good on that too.

Conditioner wise anything really! The ones you get with home hair dye are without a doubt the best though...

FallenAngel22 · 12/02/2015 20:02

I have tried everything but the best so far is the new herbal essences one. I have awful hair that needs washing every 2 days regardless. I hate it. I even bought the specialist Keraastase one for greasy hair but it's rubbish.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 12/02/2015 20:07

Yes OneLittleLady that's the one! It does smell lovely and left my hair really soft. I bought it and the conditioner for a pound each in Asda to take on holiday and was really impressed!

applecatchers36 · 12/02/2015 20:08

Not a hairdresser

Use loreal elvive sulphate free shampoo & conditioner in purple tube for my coloured hair smells nice if you like a herbal smell..think it's rosemary & mint?

TheOddity · 12/02/2015 20:13

I worked for a big commercial shampoo producer, but not a hairdresser. The silicone ingredient does coat your hair and build up on it, leaving it very lifeless. But honestly that ingredient is used in some very expensive shampoos, so like everything else, you need to read the ingredients list. I use Pantene because I just find it works on my hair.

velourvoyageur · 12/02/2015 20:14

Uriage body and hair "cream wash", 15€ for a big bottle, and Eucerin "revitalising dermacapillaire" shampoo, I think about 12€. Both have nice clean smells and I trust the brands. I also don't feel the need to condition with either and my hair can get horribly frizzy (fine tangly type) but doesn't with these. However I don't colour it, use any heat on it at all and chop it fairly regularly because it grows so fast, so is in good condition and doesn't need much pampering.

I would looove to buy Aveda but would feel too spendthrifty. I had a little bottle of their conditioner and that went at the normal rate.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 12/02/2015 20:15

Tigi Colour shampoo , big bottles from TKMaxx or Kiehls amino acid

BallroomWithNoBalls · 12/02/2015 20:44

StayGoldPonyBoy - which tigi shampoo do you mean? Or all they all sulphate free? I'm tempted by this Dumb Blonde set as I have fine and fairly bleach damaged hair that needs care but gets weighed down easily with siliconey products.

NorbertDentressangle · 12/02/2015 20:51

Inecto Coconut one (parabens free) less than £2 from Superdrug.

Seems to suit my hair, been using it for ages without that dull feeling that you sometimes get after using the same one for ages.

Datahub · 12/02/2015 21:03

my boss recommended Revlon THE ONE conditioner

i love it its a spray on thing ( and i have tried everything) www.amazon.co.uk/Revlon-Treatment-150ml-Travel-Bottle/dp/B00IJWRKKO

Datahub · 12/02/2015 21:04

conditioner is MUST HAVE

IsabellaofFrance · 12/02/2015 21:06

Bedhead Oatmeal and honey.

Lardylassnomore · 12/02/2015 21:21

Aveda conditioner and body shop shampoo

ChlorinePerfume · 12/02/2015 21:21

I like Aussie, the hairdresser often comments on how healthy and shinny my hair is. ( I swim at least 4x week). A hairdressers once told me that kerastase and Lorreal are the same thing, just a different bottle and perfume. Not sure how true that is though.

bloodyteenagers · 12/02/2015 21:33

I'm currently using timote pure. This plus having a hair dresser who cuts my hair right, keeps the frizz at bay.
Before that was using body shop.
Before l'oreal. Herbal essence. Tigi. Aussie. Pantene (gave that away after a few washes). Supermarkets own (worse was waitrose about 2 years ago killed my hair and got several inches taken off).
Only product My hair dresser has ever recommended was a change after the major cut, and a frizz product that could be bought for around £2 from a shop round the corner.

AgentCooper · 12/02/2015 21:38

I'm not a hairdresser but I do have nice hair Wink I've used lots of fancy shampoos and conditioners but have finally found my favourite: Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Transformer (orange bottles with argan oil). It seems to be on sale for £1.94 and I love it.

nipersvest · 12/02/2015 21:39

my hair is dyed and blonde so i have to use a purple toning shampoo, i use a cheap one though as it works just as well as the expensive ones for stopping brassiness, i use touch of silver, and tend to alternate with a cleansing conditioner for days when i'm giving my hair a rest and doing co-washing.

Chottie · 13/02/2015 04:52

I am not a hairdresser.

I have fine hair which needs TLC.

I use sulphate free shampoos too and alternate LE, Philip Kingsley and Keratese.
