Do you like this Mint Velvet coat?

I ordered this www.johnlewis.com/mint-velvet-double-faced-coat-grey/p1872552 and it has just arrived. I didn't realise it wasn't lined - didn't read the blurb properly! I wanted something that would be useful for work but also for casual wear in a fairly neutral colour for when the weather is a bit milder. I'd love some opinions as it's a lot of money to spend and I'm not always confident with my choices! Am 47, by the way.

I don't actually- sorry.
I think it looks between styles. It's not a pea coat or a reefer jacket, but it has a nod towards military with the epaulettes and gold buttons. I don't think it's a flattering shape or style. How about a short-ish classic trench?

Its a beautiful colour but not my style. I think the coat looks classy. Nothing offensive about it but the price is a little much in the fact that its not lined and it hasnt any wool in it. It wont be a winter coat but definetly one for when weather is milder. If you like it, keep it. If its not a winter coat you are after then it definetly fits the bill of something for work and casual wear.

pinkfrocks · 12/02/2015 16:58

It's a totally ridiculous price for an unlined, mainly polyester coat. It's worth about £30 imo.

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 12/02/2015 16:58

I don't like the gold buttons on it at all.

Laquila · 12/02/2015 16:59

I love the shape, from the photo, but would have to see it on!

If you like the sound of a trench then M&S often has great ones in their Spring collections. I have a lovely khaki-ish one from there that looks much more expensive, and is surprisingly useful.

Windowbasket · 12/02/2015 17:04

That's my thinking (re: the price). Yes, it does look nice on - but I'm not sure for the money. If I was going to spend between £100-£200 (which is a lot for me) - maybe something like this would be more of an investment plus fit the same bill re: my requirements - what do you think?www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0114-3991-9057L00&productvarid=0114-3991-9057L00-NATURAL-10&refpage=clothing&utm_source=linkshare&utm_medium=affiliate&siteID=0RpXOIXA500-Xngi8u6YzKJGBYZS1bEEww

Its a bit traditional for my liking and i am your age. Theres nothing wrong with it..it just has nothing of interest.

Windowbasket · 12/02/2015 17:13

Oh, I am so bad at this fashion lark. 'Bit traditional' sounds like it will make me look older - which I don't want! Where do you shop? I need some inspiration!

I like it but think it's just a glorified cardi really. It's probably good for a few dry spring days, but I don't think you'd get much wear out of it.

I would buy it if I had money to waste.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2015 17:19

I like the colour a lot. It's a bit boxy though.

Grey is such a fab colour

Greengardenpixie · 12/02/2015 17:24

I shop mostly online - bits of white stuff, toast, sometimes boden. I do have a hobbs trench coat that i have had for years and years. Its black with white stitching. I think the coat [the hobbs one] is fine but i dont like the epilettes cant spell you know, the bits at the top of the shoulder. Apart from that it would be ok.
My spring coat is a velvet one. Pretty thin. Its a lovely purple and i got it from white stuff.
I love this:

but then maybe not smart enough although i would get away with it for my work!

MsMcWoodle · 12/02/2015 17:27

Nice colour and shape but I would never pay that for a coat that wasn't a high percentage wool. And not lined either!
I'd have a look at tk maxx. Good time of year to be looking at coats there.

burnishedsilver · 12/02/2015 17:38

I'm usually a big fan of Mint Velvet but I've noticed that the Spring/Summer stuff coming in has taken a jump in price and synthetic fabrics are taking over.

Windowbasket · 12/02/2015 17:49

I definitely don't have money to waste! Am also wondering if it would go out of shape. Will carry on looking …. am finding everyone's input very helpful.

I bought what I think is a lovely spring coat in M&S today - Autigraph Striped Duster Coat (denim blue, grey and cream stripes) - so sorry, can't post a link from my phone - £99, and got card holder discount . An alternative perhaps? It was flying out of the shop ( it is on a poster worn by Rosie H-W who looks better in it than I do but oh well...)

Have a look at Zara, they usually do good coats

BallroomWithNoBalls · 12/02/2015 19:41

Is it this coat ? I like the look a lot but it's also 100% polyester. Infinitely nicer than the MV one though.

LeoandBoosmum · 12/02/2015 19:44

Being totally honest, it looks cheap to me - polyester mostly too. For the price, I think MV are taking the mickey.

Bexicles · 12/02/2015 19:47

I really like the Hobbs trench coat you have linked to earlier.

gonegrey56 · 12/02/2015 20:00

That is the M&S one - thanks for the link .
