OK so which shops DO you go in then??

Instead of giving me a list of places NOT to go to (although I agree with most of you!) - give me a list of shops/websites that DO work for you. I need some new inspiration!!!

I'm mid(ish) forties, size 14 (hopefully soon a 12) and just on the taller size of average. SAHM/WFH so no need for office smartness!

Have shopped in White Stuff and Fat Face (although now mostly only in the sale!), other than that supermarkets, odd bit of New Look, Dotty P's.

To be honest have hardly bought any new clothes for the last 2 years as have felt too large for it, but have recently dropped a stone so feel like I deserve a bit of a re-vamp.

Please list your faves..........

Hmm, ok, I am 42, also size 12/14 and on the taller side of average, and work in an office with no dress code, usually end up browsing in

  • All Saints
  • Cos
  • Topshop
  • Gap
  • H & M
  • Camper (for shoes)

and often pick up basics online in Boden (avoiding the ghastly retina-searing patterned stuff). Oh, and scour sales/online for fancy jeans because have annoyingly discovered that posh brands like J Brand fit my un-supermodel-like figure and don't go baggy.

(though am trying to be frugal so not doing much shopping at the mo!)

BritabroadinAsia · 02/02/2015 15:15

Similar dimensions to both of you, but shorter! Work from home part time/SAHM, so don't need work clothes either.

-Cos (cannot actually get dressed most mornings without wearing an item from here)
-Whistles
-&OtherStories
-Gap
-Zara (although quality is variable)
-Club Monaco
-J.Crew
-M and S and Boden very selectively
-The Outnet
-Anthropologie occasionally

Think that covers most of my wardrobe!

tactum · 02/02/2015 16:59

Thanks for those suggestions - having googled them some appear to be well out of my price range - and I tend to prefer a few more patterns/colours.

Will keep googling them tho - thanks!

I am 44 - almost 45, 5ft 9" size 12 (getting tight now so on a cut-back and hope to get to a 10/12 by summer)

I shop in:

whistles
Noa Noa
Avoca (selectively)
Boden (plain stuff, rarely patterned)
GAP
French connection
Zara (though less and less as quality is shite a lot of the time)
H&M but really only for t-shirts etc
Cos (very occasionally as the basic boxy shape does nothing for me)
Jigsaw
I really miss Jesire as I loved their stuff but can't get it where I am anymore

For shoes I like clarks (!) for flats such as brogues, boden sometimes for dressier shoes, camper (selectively) and we have a very good independent shoe shop in my city where I get special shoes for occasions.

EagleRay · 02/02/2015 17:15

I'm 43, size 12/14 and most of my clothes come from Toast as I live near their outlet store so pick up lots of samples/end of line stuff v cheaply!

All of my jeans have come from the Anthropologie sale, and am also fond of All Saints and Orla Kiely, but tend to get things off Ebay.

So basically, fairly expensive taste but pay a fraction of the price mostly Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2015 17:15

M&S for jeans, tights, underwear and cashmere
Whistles for tube skirts and t-shirts
Clarks and Jones for most of my shoes
Hobbs for tops sometimes and their sales for jackets
Cos for occasional gems, although lots of it is no good for me
Topshop v occasionally
H&M for longline vests for layering
Warehouse v occasionally, but far less now most of it is polyester
Jack Wills sales for a few gems
Charity shops

Floisme · 02/02/2015 17:28

Mostly TK Maxx these days. Plus bits and pieces from:
H&M - it's all over the place but some of it's great (although you never really know till you've washed it).
Uniqlo - for knitwear.
Baukjen - ££ but sales can be good.
Me and Em - also ££ but good sales.
Top Shop - very selectively but like the jewelry

pinkfrocks · 02/02/2015 17:29

I think what is sad is that on reflection there are hardly any shops that I go into.
Boden- for some plain basics (smart casual trousers) but haven't bought for ages.
The White Company- wool dresses, knitwear, nightwear.
Mint Velvet - coats, jackets, scarves, some knitwear
Uniqlo- jeans, T shirts and cashmere
Jigsaw - coats, their basics, a few tops, knitwear and the odd dress in sales.
M&S undies
John Lewis undies and accessories
Dune- shoes
Clarks - some shoes

GeorginaWorsley · 02/02/2015 17:42

Am 48, 5ft 3 and size 6/8.

I like
Mint Velvet
White company
Whistles, but over priced
Very plain Boden
Some Marks, usually Autograph but have recently bought navy bomber from main collection that is Whistles esq
Hush
Uniqlo
Great plains
John lewis Kin
Jigsaw
Very occasionally Phase Eight
Sandwich and similar brands from independent boutiques.

I want to like Zara and Mango but am usually disappointed in the product quality.
I like the simple Eileen Fisher look but am Shockat the prices.

I usually shop online.

GeorginaWorsley · 02/02/2015 17:49

pinkfrocks

You and I shopping buddies looking at our lists!

pinkfrocks · 02/02/2015 18:00

Lol yes!
Shopping twins! I tend not to buy many clothes at all though and prefer to have a capsule wardrobe (AKA next to nothing in it!) of basics in neutral colours. I think you are also a DUO girl like me?

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 02/02/2015 18:08

I'm late 30's and a size 12. I shop mainly in m&s, gap (good for basics and got some fab jersey skirts in there), joules, Boden, zara (occasionally as sizing is off so have to try on in store), h&m (again sizing is off so only if I can get to a store), also sometimes the supermarkets have great items. Sainsburys and asda are the better ones. I find tesco stuff falls apart. Sometimes I buy from landsend as well but you do need to be really careful as lots of man made fibres.

On occasion monsoon has served me well some fab jersey summer dresses last summer. And fat face.

John Lewis has lots if concessions and some of their own label stuff is really nice, lovely cardigans and knitwear in huge range of colours.

PiratePanda · 02/02/2015 18:11

Nearly 41 and currently 14-16 with big boobs, though 5:2 diet is doing wonders already 2 weeks in. Aiming for a size 12.

Noa Noa - amazing quality, slightly unusual, always classy, great sales
L K Bennett for dresses for work
Gabor shoes, Timberland boots and the odd L K Bennetts in sales
Bravissimo bras and the odd Pepperberry shirt
East is amazing for really good quality plain t-shirts. Also scarves and costume jewellery
Gap jeans, though their sizing is shit
John Smedley knits from their online outlet store
The odd Mint Velvet t-shirt
Occasionally Next for plain trousers and Dorothy Perkins for plain t-shirts.

Tanaqui · 02/02/2015 18:40

43, 5,4, 10-12

Always buy in the sales!

Boden for work- not much but will buy duplicates of good stuff (have 3 British tweed shifts from the clearance). Also some East for work.

Some Crew- short skirts in particular.

Lots of new look!

Limited fat face- gym kit mainly

Fly boots or fitflop sneakers.

Wellieswithaholein · 02/02/2015 18:41

40's - size 10 - 5ft 5"

H and M - for basic tops, cardies, jumpers, skirts, dresses.
New Look - for jeans, knickers, jumpers, tops, jewellry.
Next - for underwear, swimwear.
Topshop - for odd things that I usually end up wearing to death.
Charity shops - for all sorts, but I am really fussy.
Shoes and boots more random- Zalando, Deichman, Sole Trader, Shuh and more.

I rarely go elsewhere as I know by now what works for me and hardly ever find anything I like in other shops and cba traipsing about.

GeorginaWorsley · 02/02/2015 18:57

pink
DUO? Am being a bit thick but don't understand! !
I've tried to pare down my wardrobe and am hoping for a silver, white, navy and taupe theme for summer.

BlueEyedWonder · 02/02/2015 19:11

38 - 5ft - 6/8
Due to my size I tend to shop at places that do petite ranges.

Topshop - jeans, knits, coats, dresses
Boden - shirts, knits, dresses
French Connection - dresses
Next - jeans
M&S Limited Collection - vests, ts
Clarks - all my shoes and boots
White Stuff - leather bags, scarves, hats
Gap - denim, knits, coats, shirts, tops

QueenCardigan · 02/02/2015 19:49

I'm 41, size 8/10, sahm. Mainly I shop at....
Gap for jeans and trousers as they fit me well.
Fat face for tees ( I like the ones with lacy details)
White Stuff for blouses
Two local boutiques that stock vero moda and fever for blouses
Next for cotton summer tops
Esprit for blouses

I will also go into oasis, warehouse, mango, zara, monsoon, river island, topshop and m&s although haven't found a lot in any of them recently. I don't rule many places out.
I like visiting London to go to Uniqlo (for the cardigans), banana republic and other stories.
I love browsing around John Lewis although a lot of their brands are too dressy for my needs.

pinkfrocks · 02/02/2015 19:53

Warehouse is looking surprisingly good at the moment
Vintage
Urban outfitters
Zara
Vero moda
H&M
Monki
Top shop / forever 21 for basics
Asos for shoes

Kooples / Sandro / maje / anthropologie when I can afford it.

GeorginaWorsley · 02/02/2015 20:16

I love the look of Cos and & other stories but living in the north there are no real shops to look in and their online service bit hit and miss plus shapes difficult to judge.

pinkfrocks · 02/02/2015 20:21

I just burst out laughing every time I look at the Cos website. The clothes look like some kind of 'space suit' style Teresa May would wear, except she doesn't. I've never seen such a selection of shapeless clothes- ever.
