Flares ... will we or won't we?

Apparently, they're baaaack!

I did them first time round (teenager in the early 70s).

Never again.

OP posts:
TarkaTheOtter · 01/02/2015 19:36

I like them but as I don't wear heels I can only wear them when the ground is dry (ie never in Ireland) otherwise I end up soaked to the knee.

Cocolepew · 01/02/2015 19:50

Those M&S ones look good.
I have a pair of dark bootlegs from there which are more flared and they a super flattering. I am large of thigh though.

tethersend · 01/02/2015 19:56

YY, already have about 5 pairs of bootcut/flared cords and just bought these, which, in true m&s style, look far better IRL than in the awful photos.

samesizetoes · 01/02/2015 19:57

Same as Tarka, they look good with heels but I never have an occasion to wear heels. I have a pair I used to wear all the time but they dragged along the ground and now look ragged and tatty. not in a cool ripped jeans kinda way

BestIsWest · 01/02/2015 19:59

I have never strayed from the bootcut path. Well, I have one pair of skinnies but hardly wear them. M&S slim bootcuts are not too flarey.

dexter73 · 01/02/2015 20:07

Bootcuts and wideleg jeans are nothing like flares though.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 01/02/2015 20:09

Hmmm probably not. Not out of any dislike particularly, footwear reasons - I often wear either flat biker boots, UGGs, Jalouse type boots or ballet flats, none of which work with flares.

I do have some Topshop black leather and wood clogs I got last summer which they could work with, but meh, I have enough jeans, I'll probably sit this one out. I don't have any boyfriend jeans either, they made my legs look fat and dumpy and is just didn't see anyone except on Pinterest who looked good in them.

Smurfingreat · 01/02/2015 20:13

Yaaay, I love flares and was gutted when they went out of fashion. I think it will take some getting used to having damp ankles again though...

Twinklestein · 01/02/2015 20:32

They've been around a while. I think flares suit more women than skinnies, which look best on slim legs. Flares lengthen the leg which is always flattering.

Lucked · 01/02/2015 21:45

I am 5'10 with slim thighs unfortunately I am overweight around my middle at the moment, if my weight loss goes to plan I will wear them with tucked in lightweight blouses . I do think you need a slim waist for them.

Floisme · 01/02/2015 22:33

Course we will. Loads of us (I was one of them) said we'd never wear skinnies at first. I tried on some old flares a couple of months ago after a similar thread - I'd completely forgotten how much better they look on me.

Shoes are a problem though. And they're useless in the rain.

Turquoiseblue · 01/02/2015 23:04

Love flares Grin

velourvoyageur · 02/02/2015 07:20

Looove the seventies look! Well, not flares and shirts with big sharp starched collars, but flares on their own....with a little minimalist top and tight on the thighs, loose below.....I think they're cracking Grin or even the 60s massive flares.

Regret not buying those Zara flares in the AW collection a while back, was surprised to see them, but I never know what to wear as shoes with flares so didn't go for them. Ok when you can wear cute sandals but in winter?

AuntieStella · 02/02/2015 07:28

Like OP, did them first time round and Never Again

(Wil, stock up on skinnies and straights if this shows even the slightest sign of gaining traction).

Flares don't 'balance' heavy thighs, BTW. They make you look massive all the way. It's a big example of the Emperor's New Clothes.

Floisme · 02/02/2015 07:33

Shoes and flares are a bloody nightmare in winter, especially if you don't wear heels. In fact winter and flares are a bummer full stop - you really need to live in California.

Anyway I can't remember what I did last time around but in the 70s, I wore them with desert boots - at least I think that's what they were called; they were a kind of forerunner of high tops but in greyish blue suede. I did love them.

velourvoyageur · 02/02/2015 07:37

Oh yeah will definitely be stockpiling skinnies if this catches on, my love of flares doesn't surpass my need for skinnies!

Had a look at the Guardian picture gallery thing on this- aren't these just artworks....I think I may print those out and stick them up to wake up to in the morning Blush

Does anyone remember when mini skirts were decreed over? < Hopeful > Grin I think it was 1970 and my friends and I were furious. We swore we'd never, ever wear midis. It must have lasted for all of about a week....

Flares are far from perfect but the only reason we think skiinnies look ok is that we don't notice them any longer.

HellKitty · 02/02/2015 07:41

I'm tall and slim (not a stealth boast!) and wear flares sometimes. They make me look shorter and curvier which I hate but DP seems to like. I wear mine with Adidas superstars (if there are no puddles) or some amazing block heeled tan/orange ankle boots. Total 70s.

KikitheKitKat · 02/02/2015 09:12

Does anyone know where that top is from in Noddy's first post?

AmberNectarine · 02/02/2015 09:29

Already have - got a pair on Friday and wore them out that night with a DVF wrap top, pink suede pointy courts and a cropped fair fur swing jacket. Made a nice change from skinnies!

Floisme · 02/02/2015 09:40

Yay I knew you'd have some Amber Grin

VillaVillekulla · 02/02/2015 10:03

I have some MiH Marrakech and they look great. Really flattering. I never wear them though as I don't quite know what to wear them with. It's the shoes/boots that I struggle with. I need a high but comfy heel to make them work.

AmberNectarine · 02/02/2015 10:17

Ever the fashion victim floisme!

PattieBoyd · 02/02/2015 10:22

Proper flares - YES! Bootcut posing as flares - no :-)

noddyholder · 02/02/2015 11:13

Yes agree bootcuts don't give you that look you need real flares. I do like them quite tight to teh knee too
