Do people still wear fascinators to weddings?

I am going to a wedding on Saturday and I just wondered if people still wear fascinators or are they naff?? The wedding is being held in a very lovely venue and I am sure there will be some very well dressed people there. I didn't know anyone else who is going as it is my DH's work colleague who is getting married.

I really don't like fascinators, infact I've never worn anything on my head at a wedding, not even a hat.

Areyourevising · 01/02/2015 18:26

Thanks for all your comments. I am 50 (gulp) but hope I don't look it. I have a chin length highlighted bob with fringe. I thought I might go for a very small hair accessory, I've seen one in Accessorize. My dress is beige and black with black accessories. I thought that I could always take it out if I found no-one else was wearing one. Unfortunately I have no females in my house to give me an honest opinion.

I love fascinators. But I also love bootcut jeans (not at weddings) so I am a fashion disaster according to MNers.

LineRunner · 01/02/2015 18:38

You don't have to wear anything on your head.

bryonyelf · 01/02/2015 18:57

They are ridiculous. Get a good blow dry and add a nice slide or grip instead.

callamia · 01/02/2015 19:03

Fascinators are often naff. Get a good hat, and a good hair-do, instead.

Upatree · 01/02/2015 20:34

I think they're incredibly naff, sorry.

WhatEverZen · 01/02/2015 21:13

No. I think they're very dated now

Jackie0 · 02/02/2015 08:32

The most important question is , do you like them op?
Truly stylish woman don't choose their look based on what's popular.

Areyourevising · 02/02/2015 19:06

I must admit that on some people they look nice. I hate having my hair done at the hairdressers so will do it myself and will probably wear the ( small) hair slide (feathers and a small flower, not naff) I have bought. Thank you for the advice. I will count the number of fascinators worn (if any) and let you know.

Yes yes yes - and I couldn't give a stuff if Philip Treacy hates that or if it's not trendy. I say just wear something if you think it looks good Grin

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 02/02/2015 21:28

No to fascinators, they are totally naff.

You don't need headwear at a wedding in this day and age.

Eltonjohnsflorist · 02/02/2015 21:31

TK maxx can be great for hats but obviously it's a bit hit and miss and you have to be patient! V cheap though, under £50

motleymop · 02/02/2015 21:31

You could hire a hat - if you have hire places near you. I hired a gorgeous hat recently. I live in London.

Whippet81 · 03/02/2015 12:38

I have to wear hats to judge horse showing and I've had some beauties from charity shops - think people wear them once and can't be bothered to store them as they take up room.

SkilledatSkiving · 03/02/2015 14:02

No-one wears hats to weddings nowadays either.

Not strictly true, but they're definitely on the decline. There was one hat at the wedding we went to a couple of weeks ago, and the wearer was 60 plus.

hellsbellsmelons · 03/02/2015 14:39

I like them too and wore one to a wedding back in August 2013.
Loads of us were wearing them.
Wore the same one to another wedding in April 2014 and again, loads of people wearing them and we all looked lovely Grin
Wear what you want and what you think is nice and you feel comfortable in.

And.... I love and wear bootleg jeans all the time as well. So there!
My arse is waaaay to big to carry of skinnies, that's for sure.
I need the balance! Wink

Go with the hair slide/ hair flower.

I don't like pillbox hats much; they are a bit Kate Middleton.

I've seen hats worn recently at fashion-y weddings. You don't say how tall you are, but if you're 5'6" or above you could pull off a massive hat. They are loads of fun to wear and wide brims seem to be back in style. I tend to hire hats when I want to wear them; they have much better styles than the usual suspects (Debo's, John Lewis etc).

LizR999 · 03/02/2015 20:04

What you wear on your head to the wedding should be all about how it fits with the line of the outfit....super plain elegant dress? Go nuts on the hat or fascination, tiara, hair-do whatever you like! Fussy print, or flouncy dress? Go minimal on the hair action-whatever that may be. I see lots of Mothers of the Brides in my work and the golden rule is if it doesn't make you feel fabulous-don't do it...maybe that should be a life rule...

BuggersMuddle · 03/02/2015 20:30

Depending on hair / outfit, I tend to go for jewelled hair clip.

I went to an event at the palace last summer and there were more hats than fascinators, but I don't know if that translates to weddings.

Agree with Liz though. It's about the outfit as a whole and I do think you height and build comes into it (for example, I am short but relatively broad of shoulder, so I tend to avoid both the very flat brimmed hats, but also anything terribly delicate). Plus there is truth about what you feel confident in. It doesn't always translate to feel fab == look fab, but one thing is for sure, if you feel awkward, you'll look awkward.

As to milliners etc. depends what you want to spend. I don't get much opportunity to wear hats so I pitched up at the palace last summer wearing a hat my mother lent me, that I think came from House of Fraser or John Lewis. YMMV. I didn't mind pitching up for a £££ dress and already had the shoes, but just could not justify hundreds for a hat.

Plus at a wedding if there all day, you will more than likely take it off, if not for the meal, certainly for the dancing. For that reasons alone, Cherry Chau or Swarovski clip?

Areyourevising · 04/02/2015 19:31

Well I have decided to wear my hair clip which is quite small and not naff (well I don't think so anyway). It looks great and matches my outfit. I am only 5ft 2" so couldn't pull a hat off. I also hate what a hat does to my already flat hair.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback, I love MN.

Sorry for this late entry into this post but I feel very strong that the bad publicity has been caused by hat designers who publicly at Ascot said the fascinator is dead, but I can tell you that my company still is selling dozens a day even in December. We have many testimonials sent to us commenting how their fascinator stayed all day and and they have received many lovely comments. These custommers are mostly normal everyday working people not the rich and famous who just want to keep up with designers labels. The designers call their products hats now but we would call them a fascinator as they have a hairband so the next question is that a really beautiful and pretty hat or is it a really beautiful and pretty fascinator, some say it can't be a fascinator and look that good but some people are just snobs!

waitingforsomething · 15/12/2015 08:57

My sil and my mum both wore one to mine last weekend. They were in a minority but looked lovely

Roussette · 15/12/2015 09:16

I once worked in a large store and this dear little old lady came up to me and told me about her GGD's wedding and what she was going to wear and then asked me where the "fornicators" were. Grin

I could barely reply!
