How would you change women's clothing dress sizes if you could?

How would you chane the sizing system? Woul you get rid of the numerical system?

OP posts:
MyrnaLoy · 27/01/2015 21:04

Don't see what the problem is with a numerical system? Do think that the shops should at least try to standardise - even within their own ranges sizes vary a staggering amount.

Why do you ask?

KatyMac · 27/01/2015 21:06

I think I'd like a scale so I could compare a 12 at Tesco and a 12 at M&S

But as Myrna says they aren't even standard across their own ranges

itsbetterthanabox · 27/01/2015 21:07

I think it would be so much easier if it were all in inches. Then you'd know exactly what size you were and each shop would be the same sizing.

Twinklestein · 27/01/2015 21:13

I would ask shops like Monsoon to do smaller sizes given that their 8s are enormous. It means that petite peeps can't buy their clothes.

321zerobaby · 27/01/2015 21:38

Its not about sizing, its about proportions. For example, I never can find a skirt in M&S to fit, as they cut too straight, so tight on the hips and big on the waist, so no size will fit. So it wouldn't matter even if their sizing was in line with everyone else.

KatyMac · 27/01/2015 21:40

I agree with that 321 - I haven't worn a slim skirt in years

My waist is way too small & jeans are a nightmare fit my bum hands full at the waist fit my waist and I can't get a leg in

DextersMistress · 27/01/2015 21:40

Id like in between sizes. I would be a perfect size 11.

PetulaGordino · 27/01/2015 21:41

I'm with 321 on this

Consistency would be a start, but also measuremwnts of some kind would be good (and there is no excuse not to on the web IMO)

SlicedAndDiced · 27/01/2015 21:42

Make a 16 a 10

Grin that would speed the diet up!

StatisticallyChallenged · 27/01/2015 21:44

Agreed Petula, although I am seeing some smaller companies doing actual dimensions for individual garments now which is refreshing.

Mitchy1nge · 27/01/2015 21:47

I'd like to know the waist and chest and hip measurements, the length of skirts, just like with jeans - is v easy to buy jeans according to waist size and leg length, dresses, skirts and tops are ridiculous and even within a brand I can span a couple of sizes and yet still assistants expect you to identify as a particular size when there is no standard for that size

Ujjayi · 27/01/2015 21:51

There are allegedly 2 main sizing systems used on the high street: "Young Women" for the lower end of the high street such as Topshop & "Women" used by the likes of Whistles, Hobbs etc. The latter is supposed to conform to a British Standard. So this explains some difference (4cm difference at the waist & 2cm on the hip). In reality it is all over the place & yes often inconsistent across any given store.

specialsubject · 27/01/2015 22:01

standardised - done with measurements, waist, hip, bust, whatever.

real numbers in centimetres.

also standardised for shoes so a 42 really is a 42.

OneHandFlapping · 27/01/2015 22:03

I find M&S skirts too tight on the waist and too big on the hips- the exact opposite of 321. So seeing as we don't all have the same proportions, it seems logical that different shops adjust the sizing to fit their demographic.

FamiliesShareGerms · 27/01/2015 22:06

Dimensions on the web (available by scanning the label with your mobile)

And standardised sizes by shop - maybe even displayed on mannequins of the right proportions and labelled as such

anothernumberone · 27/01/2015 22:09

Standardised in cms. Mannequins with average proportions

FillWithWineToActivate · 27/01/2015 22:47

Definitely standard sizing and in between sizes too!

Sunny67 · 27/01/2015 22:52

Get all manufactures to use the same tapemeasure. I bought my OH four pair of trousers from Next. I had to take three pairs back as he couldn't fasten them. How can a measurement of 36 inches be anything other than 36 inches???? According to the assistant, it is because they were made in China! What a strange logic. If I ordered a carpet I'd expect it to fit the room, not finish short because it was made in China, or maybe it's just me Confused

avocadotoast · 27/01/2015 22:56

Shorter bloody leg lengths and better petite sections would suit me fine. I've never ever understood the point of putting t-shirts in the petite section, but there's never enough short length jeans, trousers etc.

And dresses! Don't get me started on the body length of dresses...

RosyAuroch · 28/01/2015 12:33

Make bust sizes larger, or add a large bust option similar to a petite option. I am currently an 8/10 hip and a 14/16 bust.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/01/2015 12:38

In Canada, jeans often come unhemmed. The shop do an inseam measurement, and then hem the jeans (or other trousers) to the right length. Rather a lot better.

slug · 28/01/2015 13:08

My biggest bugbear (apart from being apple shaped and therefore not able to find anything on the web if they use waist measurements) is arm sizes. I have the normal muscular arms of some who swims regularly and lifts small children. So while clothes may fit me, I often can't get my arms in (or out) of sleeves. I'm looking at you Cos

noddyholder · 28/01/2015 13:10

I would love waist/hip for bottoms eg 29/32 and boob size like 12dd for tops

AuntieStella · 28/01/2015 13:15

"Make a 16 a 10"

They've already done that once. Sizes were standardised until the US deregulated in the 1980s, and there has been quite a change in sizing.

I'd like to see more ranges with tops sized to allow for large norks (like Pepperberry) so there was less necessity to hunt for a trade off between straining over the boobs v far too wide at neckline/shoulders and lower ribs/waist.

AWholeLottaNosy · 28/01/2015 13:16

I agree about making bust sizes bigger. Or have different options like they do in Pepperberry. Tops still seem to be cut to a B cup! I'm a 12-14 bottom but 16 on top so dresses and jackets are a nightmare for me.
