Denim skirts - frumpy?

Dancergirl · 23/01/2015 20:02

I've got a denim skirt, mini-ish length, above my knee, which I haven't worn for ages.

I'm just wondering if it's had its day and I should chuck it or start wearing again?

Are denim skirts frumpy/mumsy? Because if so it's definitely going!

I really like all three of those Pinterest links.

Unfortunately denim skirts don't seem to suit me, they fit ok new but then stretch till they spin round when I walk or slide down to a frumpy length. I just can't seem to find one with a decent waist - and they just don't work on my hips. I'm a 12-14 but even size 12 is too big.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 24/01/2015 14:09

I want to get a denim skirt this year. Those earlier pinterest links aren't doing it for me, but there are denim skirt looks that definitely do:

I don't think these are frumpy, at least I hope not, because they're from my own board of looks I like Grin

However they do confirm to me that you need very slim thighs to look best in one, so I will definitely be going into shops to try them rather than buying online!

Frumpy

Really frumpy

squoosh · 24/01/2015 14:24

Miranda Kerr has amazing pins and looks great in that denim mini, as she would in a bin liner. I still maintain that denim skirts are frumpsville central for 99% women.

squoosh · 24/01/2015 14:25

Kirsten Dunst's facial expression says it all in that third link. She knows that's one ugly, ill-fitting skirt!

CurlsLDN · 24/01/2015 15:05

blairwaldorf I just spotted a skirt on river islands site the same shape as those you linked www.riverisland.com/women/skirts/denim-skirts/Dark-wash-denim-pencil-skirt-666231
(I would look like an overstuffed sausage in it, but I like the looks you pinned, Def not frumpy)

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 24/01/2015 15:56

That is really nice Curls! Trying to ignore the fact I owned one exactly that shape from Next when I was 14 or so. :)

I'm with squoosh. Olivia Palermo and Miranda Kerr make all clothes look good, no matter how ill-advised. The exception proves the rule.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 22:06

Over leggings not good, I think. Much better with opaques or bare legs.

Knittingbat · 25/01/2015 14:14

I think it all depends on context. The denim-skirt-with-opaques look is not for me, though it all depends on what's in fashion - made one from a pair of old jeans years ago and wore it constantly - however was 20something and much thinner, plus that was very much a look where I was.

I think you can also differentiate between 'frumpy' and what can be a more conservative or preppy look - I like well-scrubbed nice tanned legs, dark wash denim skirt, cool little loose vest/shirt/tshirt in high summer, it's preppy in a north-eastern US type way rather than uber fashionable, but not exactly frumpy.

Twinklestein · 25/01/2015 16:47

What squoosh said.

So Olivia Palermo can pull off double denim, so what? She's one of the most beautiful women in the world, with an amazing figure.

Poppy Delevingne + Alexa Chung are tall, reed-thin 20somethings, mumsy denim looks edgey and anti-fashion on them, on mums it just looks frumpy.

Twinklestein · 25/01/2015 16:54

Like knittingbag I used to wear a vintage wash cut off denim mini when I was 17 with cowboy boots and a leather jacket. Absolutely fine on a teen in 1988.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 25/01/2015 17:34

Fair enough twinklestein, and I may just be repeating what's been said on the "frumpy" thread, but I just wanted to demonstrate that denim skirts aren't necessarily frumpy. But the proof will be in the pudding when I try some on - I'm not a mum but I am certainly not reed thin or tall either, so we shall see! :)

GobblersKnob · 25/01/2015 18:04

I have a very very short, tight, bleached, ripped denim mini. You wouldn't call it frumpy....

AtlanticDrift · 25/01/2015 21:22

According to the Times Style mag today they are def mot frumpy. But everythings relative innit

Saurus72 · 25/01/2015 21:40

Yeah, I saw the Alexa Chung article too. I think denim skirts are challenging unless you are quite thin and definitely nowhere near being frumpy. If you can tend towards frumpsville anyway, they aren't the best option. I've had a few over the years and can never really get to grips with them, although in theory I really like the whole 70s a-line skirt with platforms look.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 26/01/2015 15:57

A line denim skirts especially buttone through are totally 70s. Denim and 70s are set to be big things this season.

I wouldn't wear a short denim skirt though. Not my style at all.

MsBojangles · 26/01/2015 16:04

I haven't worn one since about 1997 and even then I wasn't too keen.

Totally agree about them making your bum look wide and fat, not a good look on anyone.

The ones with a split are particularly common looking...yep, I'm aware that I'm an enormous snob thank you very much Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 26/01/2015 16:06

I've got a short denim skirt on today with a chunky navy jumper and navy cable knit tights.

I don't look frumpy, well I don't think I do.

Floisme · 26/01/2015 17:25

I've got a denim pencil skirt and if I do say so myself, my bum looks great.

toastandmarmiterocks · 26/01/2015 21:46

The only time I've looked vaguely ok in a denim skirt was weirdly when I was pregnant. Or maybe I just didn't give a shit about/couldn't see my stumpy legs under my huge proud bump Grin

GutsyMcMuffin · 26/01/2015 22:22

I think they are challenging, but they almost always look frumpy with opaque tights and definitely with long boots.

holmessweetholmes · 27/01/2015 10:35

This thread has just inspired me to buy a denim skirt Grin - just ordered one from Boden! Clearly people have very varied opinions about what looks frumpy. I think the outfits in that first set of Pinterest photos were really nice - casual but elegant. But then I have no desire to look 'cutting edge'. I am a sahm in rural Cumbria and am quite often muddy and running around with the dog. A denim skirt might be too smart on most days!

NimpyWWindowmash · 27/01/2015 11:47

but, but, but....I love my denim skirts.

I only wear them with bare legs and fitted tee/fitted cashmere top.

Some are fitted (pencil shape), some a-line

floaty skirts can be a bit...wafty-floaty-twee IMO
