Denim skirts - frumpy?

Dancergirl · 23/01/2015 20:02

I've got a denim skirt, mini-ish length, above my knee, which I haven't worn for ages.

I'm just wondering if it's had its day and I should chuck it or start wearing again?

Are denim skirts frumpy/mumsy? Because if so it's definitely going!

Yep wide and flat, not a good look.

I don't know how I'd describe my style gardenpixie, def not jean skirts.

Silverjohnleggedit · 24/01/2015 08:14

Dancer in the winter I'd wear mine with ankle boots, opaque tights and a checked lumberjack type shirt. In the summer I would wear it with a pair of plain canvas shoes like Spring Court tennis shoes and a slightly oversized crew neck t shirt or a light jumper, something like a Tippi sweater.
It's not cutting edge but comfortable and casual for the weekend.

Silverjohnleggedit · 24/01/2015 08:25

I think the frumpy bar is very low on this thread, the pinterest links are fine, not what I would want to wear but it's not how most of us view frumpy - those women look well groomed and casual, not cutting edge but certainly their look does not suggest that typical of frumpy dressing that they have stopped caring and have let themselves go. So Anna Wintour wouldn't approve, I guess we could live with that. Grin

Denim skirts are in loads of shops at the moment. Lots of button through styles and lots of pencil shapes....so they must be fashionable.
I think I've got a denim mini knocking around somewhere that got a lot of wear last spring.
I look hideous in the pencil shape button through knee length ones.

BlueEyedWonder · 24/01/2015 08:32

I don't aspire to be 'cutting edge' or 'frumpy' and I think the denim skirt sits between the two like most clothing items do.
I bought a faded cut off, above the knee one from Gap last year. Wore it lots last summer with a crew neck T or skinny merino sweater and tan ankle boots. I find it trickier to wear in winter but like it with navy opaques and navy ankle boots and an oversize grey fair isle knit.

Whîstles are doing an a line button down denim midi this season, I love it and it plays to my tall, slim, hourglass shape.

Armpitt · 24/01/2015 08:35

they are a bit ' mum at white stuff'

or fat legs in leggings and uggs for me

PESONALLY

m0therofdragons · 24/01/2015 08:38

I have no idea what frumpiness means anymore. How are the pintrest pics frumpy? They're just casual. Frumpy to me is shapeless with little effort like jeans and a hoodie.
If you aren't wearing denim skirts what do you wear for casual weekends?

chanie44 · 24/01/2015 08:48

I think the pencil denim skirts are really difficult to wear, as they aren't very flattering on most figures.

I have an a-line denim skirt which really suits my figure. I don't care if anyone thinks it's frumpy.

velourvoyageur · 24/01/2015 09:05

I have never ever managed to wear a denim skirt. Have tried but it doesn't work on me.

I don't think it works on a great deal of others either, sorry!

TychosNose · 24/01/2015 09:11

I like them. They can look a bit "mum at White stuff" as a pp said but they can look really good too, IMO.

I think things are only frumpy if you are Some of those pics look good. I don't like them on he wrong shape but a really short one in summer with a tan looks good

TychosNose · 24/01/2015 09:35

Sorry - I didn't mean to be rude. Have a lovely time shopping was
I couldn't afford white stuff even if I wanted to!

I had one with a zip at the front and a button at the waist and it made me look as if I had a huge pot belly. The most unflattering skirt ever.

Greengardenpixie · 24/01/2015 09:43

Maybe that's where I'm going wrong. I love white stuff. Grin jealous of your shopping trip Envy Envy Envy Envy

PrimroseEverdeen · 24/01/2015 10:02

Tychos Nose. Love those looks, especially the second one. I may have to reconsider my stance!

spookyskeleton · 24/01/2015 10:54

Wow, I love my denim skirt and didn't realise they were deemed 'frumpy'!

I wear it in the winter with tights and boots and then in the summer with converse or flip flops.

Agree with a pp - I had one with a Button and zip at the front and it was so unflattering. Now have a Boden one which is incredibly flattering (zip at the back) and I love it!!

coffeenut · 24/01/2015 11:08

I was wearing a white denim pencil skirt just today. It's an inch above the knee. With a loose blue silky blouse and tan sandals (summer here).

However, I ditched all of my other denim skirts (I had 3!) about two yrs ago as they looked dated.

I like the links Tychos posted - obvs depends on how you style them and the particular skirt.

stripytees · 24/01/2015 12:33

This thread is a perfect example of why I started the other thread about what frumpy means to people - can't understand how the photos linked to on page 1 are frumpy. Confused

On denim skirts; like most things, if you bought it in 1995 it probably looks old fashioned now but in a modern cut and the right colour they can look great.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 13:46

I also have a Topshop v fitted dark denim pencil skirt, which I think looks really good with opaques and heeled ankle boots, and not at all frumpy.

It really does depend on the skirt, how you wear it and your style in general.

SunnyBaudelaire · 24/01/2015 13:49

long denim skirts = super frumpy.
Short denim skirts = OK, but the shorter the better.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/01/2015 13:51

Love your name, Sunny - she is one of the coolest characters in children's fiction ever!

SunnyBaudelaire · 24/01/2015 13:58

thank you Remus! I especially liked her secretarial and cooking skills at such a young age!
