Has anyone ever painted the soles of their shoes red?

I like the look of red soles on black stiletto high heels but there's no way I'm buying Louboutins. Apparently, Louboutin will sue anyone who tries to make red-soled shoes! Although I think Zara prevailed in court, nobody else dares invoke the wrath and ensuing legal fees. But, seriously, how can you patent/trademark/whatever a shoe colour?! This makes me want to do it even more.

I googled this and found something in the Daily Fail I think it was saying that there was a rush on a certain red house paint by women doing this but I am not sure if I believe it.

If I have basic black stilettos what should I take into consideration to do it? What sorts of paints will work on what sorts of surfaces? Ideally I think the sole should be leather. I can say that the shoes will only ever be worn indoors on carpet so they don't have to stand up to pavement. If I knew who sold Louboutins in Manchester I would go have a look at them to see what I was aiming for - I've only ever seen them in photographs. But, it's not like I actually need to fool the public that these are the real thing. I just want that look.

So, anyone tried it?

No, in answer to your question, but I used to have some black heels with pink soles from Clarks. They were lovely.

(sorry, no help!)

Some shoe repairers will add any colour sole you want to your shoes.

SaidFlorence · 20/01/2015 11:19

You can buy red sole paint.

Harvey nicks sell as do Selfridges in manchester so you could look there

I think you would need to do a really careful job and mask up the sides of the shoes etc or it could look a bit naff

Fabulassie · 20/01/2015 11:44

Yes, if I do this myself I must be verrrry careful so it looks nice. I saw a Youtube video where a girl did it and it didn't look that nice. I saw some DIY stick-on things on Amazon but that doesn't look easy at all. (I struggle to put on plasters.)

I regularly pass two different city centre shoe repair places so I may ask in them if they do this.

As the owner of Louboutins, what I can tell you is it comes off after the first wear!

jackstini · 20/01/2015 18:00

I have some from new look with red soles - not sure if they still do them?

Has anyone ever painted the soles of their shoes red?
jackstini · 20/01/2015 18:03

Mayline, Prima Moda & Faith all have some shoes with red soles on ebay too Shock did not think I would find that

DealForTheKids · 20/01/2015 18:05

Useful advice on the thread but on the point about trademarking - when I see a woman with red soles I do think 'ooh, Laboutins'! So I'm actually surprised that Zara prevailed. Seems the mental association is huge! (See the Topshop green soles - Chloe Green range I think) for an attempt at the same)

carlywurly · 20/01/2015 19:55

I've got some Boden ones with bright red soles. Johnnie must have taken them on Grin

MrsTawdry · 20/01/2015 20:00

coloured red sole kit on Amazon. US ...but still.

MrsTawdry · 20/01/2015 20:00

DH is a painter and decorator and he says, prime the soles then use red gloss paint. Scratch them with sandpaper first

GallicIsCharlie · 20/01/2015 20:02

Wow, Florence, a whole website devoted to red soles Grin

McFox · 20/01/2015 20:05

It comes off the real ones pretty damn fast so I wouldn't worry too much!

AppleRings · 20/01/2015 20:16

I have the same ones or very similar to jackstini from new look

Fabulassie · 20/01/2015 22:23

I have shoes with non-rubbery but non-leather soles that look like leather. They're mostly smooth. I think I'll try red gloss house paint - an article I read on the subject mentioned testing pots from a home decorating store. (B&Q probably has them?)

Since they'll only ever be worn on carpet (actually mostly in bed), I'm not too fussed about how well the red paint wears - it should last a good while.

If i remember right you can't get gloss tester pots - just emulsions...
Post up some pics when you do them! - am intrigued Smile

Wearing shoes to bed?! Confused

MakeMeWarmThisWinter · 21/01/2015 21:48

Lol at wearing them in bed!

Amber I thought I recalled you saying you repainted your Loubs?

TeaAddict235 · 21/01/2015 22:02

. ...but if you wear stilettos in bed, won't they rip the sheets?
Blush

Koalafications · 21/01/2015 22:26

I just don't understand why you would wear shoes to bed...

4PlusMum · 21/01/2015 22:32

As the owner of numerous pairs, I can tell you that the red wears away very quickly on the sole.

They sell them in Harvey Nichols if you want to check them out.

chipsandpeas · 22/01/2015 08:35

I have a pair of black heels from
Dorothy Perkins that have red soles had them a few years mind you but some shops might still do them

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 22/01/2015 08:42

Koala, really?! You can't possibly imagine a scenario where a woman might wear heeled shoes in bed? Confused
