Swimming costume worries

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2015 10:50

I'm going to Florida in May and bought this on Saturday. I really like it and DH said it suits me but I'm worried I'm going to look ridiculous in it - I really, really don't want to have to wear a swimming costume, shorts and t shirts are my limit for bearing flesh!

I tried on other costumes but this was the only style I felt remotely comfortable in as it didn't make my boobs look huge but was very supportive. Please tell me that I won't be stared at for looking ridiculous! I know you don't know what I look like but if it helps I'm 39, 5'7", size 14 with a tummy and chunky legs.

(And if anyone has any other ideas for a costume that would be great as I'll need another one!)

Thank you.

I think it's fab! Screw what the husband says - if you feel good in it then wear it! Also might be worth telling him that undermining your confidence when you e struggled to find the right thing isn't very kind.

chdmum20 · 19/01/2015 11:04

primary DH said it suits her ?

PrimalLass · 19/01/2015 11:11

I don't understand - why would it look ridiculous? It's just a swimsuit.

You could always try some board shorts on top if you feel too exposed.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2015 11:12

Primary, DH told me the costume suits me, it's me who's having the confidence issues!

Remember this is the USA you are going to. The land of the fat acceptance movement. You won't stand out at all.

Primaryteach87 · 19/01/2015 11:28

Whoops misread OP, sorry! I still think it's pretty fab Grin

JuniperTisane · 19/01/2015 11:29

I tried that one one. Its a lovely costume. The only reason I sent it back was I couldn't get on with the back fastening bit. I think you will look absolutely fine and not stand out at all except to show the good taste you have in swimwear.

MaybeDoctor · 19/01/2015 11:33

That is a lovely swimsuit. Maybe look out for a nice kaftan or two? I find a dress much better for wearing to the beach than trousers or shorts, as you can get changed much more easily.

Also look at Zoggs swimwear on Simply Swim - they just sent me an email and their new range is nice.

GillSans · 19/01/2015 11:35

It's lovely, might get one myself.

these are very nice too. I have a similar figure.

dancemom · 19/01/2015 11:38

Aaarrrgggh sorry pressed post too soon!

However I bought something like that last holiday as I didn't want total about in a swimsuit, easy to coverup in and to get on and off

Lweji · 19/01/2015 11:41

I love that and it looks forgiving of any belly.

Would you dare a bikini? :) and get a proper fitting bra as you would your underwear bras.

Check out brands on bra intervention threads. They do different cup sizes and nice swimming costumes.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2015 12:00

Thanks everyone.

Lweji, I wish I could wear a bikini, my stomach is far too wobbly and pasty white so there's also the problem of it getting burnt! This swimming costume is bra sized - there's no way I could wear one that wasn't underwired as it wouldn't be a good look at all as I'm a 34H!

Juniper, surprisingly I managed to do it up myself. I'd tried a tankini before that DH had to do it up as I couldn't manage it. The tankini looked hideous anyway, even my lovely, tactful DH took one look and said 'it's a nice pattern but it looks a bit, er, Madonna-ish'!

Thanks for the reminder. I've now ordered about 10 things from here at about £3 each Grin

My tummy is too wobbly for a bikini too, but I can get away with shorts like these and a bikini top.

Georgina1975 · 19/01/2015 12:15

Love it...I think it will look great with your figure. I am similar and am tempted to get the same style (I actually would do if i didn't have 3 others in the drawer).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2015 12:15

Primal, I love the shorts and I'm tempted to order myself a pair! What is the sizing like? I'm usually a 14 but if they come up small I'll probably need a 16.

Oops, forgot link.

fieldfare · 19/01/2015 12:18

That's a lovely costume, I might order one for myself.
I'm a fair bit bigger than you (size 18, and shrinking slowly) and I'd have no issues about wearing that.

Lweji · 19/01/2015 12:24

BTW, I live in Portugal and only over 60s (and even then) wear full swimming costumes on the beach. It's all bikinis. Wobbly bellies or not.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 19/01/2015 12:24

these are fab, I have several that I have brought over the last couple of years. I find the built in bra cups to be supportive enough for the pool and the lazy river/slides etc. Wouldn't want o wear them for proper lane swimming but for holidays they are fab. Come in a few colours and have that power mesh lining on the tummy to give a bit of added confidence.

I found the one with the city scene on to be flattering as well. im a 12 but with problem tummy and upper legs, and the cut is fine and doesn't give me a wedgy. I have tankinis from the same range but the costume is better. Also the straps are removable so good for sunbathing or for wearing as bandeau top with shorts?

they also do good kaftan/coverups direct.asda.com/george/women/holiday-shop/kaftan/G004845995,default,pd.html usually do a few colours as well.

if you want to buy swimwear over there, head for the forever 21 store in the outlet mall at the end of international drive, bargains to be had in there.

I wouldn't worry, without wanting to stereotype at a 14 you won't stand out there. You will see much bigger women than you in bikinis as well as much smaller and no one seems to bat an eyelid at what anyone else is wearing poolside or in the waterparks.

I also got a really nice tropical print swimsuit from sainsburys last summer so if you can get to the supermarkets they are worth a look.

PrimalLass · 19/01/2015 12:28

I think the shorts are generously sized.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 19/01/2015 12:30

m&s have some really nice swimsuits and bikinis and tankinis in as well, and mix and match pieces. I have brought a bright pink tropical print set. and tempted by lots of others. We have been to florida orlando and Miami for the last few years, and this year going on a Disney cruise, can't wait. still hate getting my body out in swimwear but its so hot and humid its a relief to be able to have a dip and cool off, that you will probably forget about not feeling confident and just want to cool off.

ToSeaInaSieve · 19/01/2015 12:34

That is a great swimming costume - has the flattering tummy ruching, supportive boob area and really nice design, I love it.

I'm a similar shape to you and the only thing I like that that costume doesn't have is more coverage in the bum/thigh area. So ideally a boyleg or mini shorts style. I would probably buy that costume and then get a navy two-piece/tankini, with a similar top half and a shorts bottom half. like so]

Then I would have the option of wearing the navy shorts over my red & navy swimsuit if I felt a bit exposed.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 19/01/2015 12:36

Thanks again everyone, I'm feeling much more confident now. I'll never be 100% happy in a swimming costume but you're right, I won't be the biggest there. I'm going to look into the shorts and bikini top - although I've got wobbly arms (I sound stunning don't I?!) if I can cover the lower half of my belly I would feel more confident. I did wonder if these might be worth a try. I some similar tankini bottoms from Bravissimo a few years ago and they could be folded up or down without looking odd.

God I came on here thinking I couldn't wear a swimming costume and I'm now thinking about a bikini!

specialsubject · 19/01/2015 13:31

it looks fine, and you could actually swim in it.

Obviously you'll want to keep the sun exposure down - this is where board shorts and a rash vest really pay off. Boardies also dry much quicker than a swimsuit (wear them commando). You wear a bikini top of some sort under the rashie.

another alternative - Sports Direct do boy leg costumes which stay in place and also look good.

I wear all these and would wear the suit you have too. Same size, same shape, 10 years older.
