Am thinking this year of ditching the dye. Sick of grey regrowth after 3-4 weeks. Seeing my hairdresser this week and going to get her advice on how to transition. May do some platinum - or even grey - highlights to start with and am fully prepared at the right moment to get the chop to avoid the mahoosive badger stripe. My view is I would rather have the pain of growing out short hair than growing out the dye!

My hair is curly and fine. My face is quite square? I think? Whatever shape it is, it looks awful with it all scraped back off my face, so I will need something (fringe wise) over my face when/if I go short - could not do a totally elfin/short-short crop. And then I kind of get stuck. I have attached a very smiley photo to see if you S&B gurus could come up with some suggestions as to what to aim for please...I have spent so long on google images I am going loopy.

Google Michelle Williams hair and look at the images. It is a lovely short haircut with a fringe.

Milmingebag · 18/01/2015 23:20

here

This would look great.

LeoandBoosmum · 19/01/2015 01:58

I love this but am not sure about it suiting a square face? Maybe ask a stylist first?

Also, I don't know anything about face shapes but I imagine that if your face is very square (Jennifer Aniston maybe) you need hair around the chin, and some length to soften the squareness?
Sharon Osborne has a very square face and suits her short hair BUT she has lots of height on top which lengthens maybe....and I think her hair styles would be very ageing on a younger woman...

LeoandBoosmum · 19/01/2015 02:12

Here: you can scroll through 28 styles (but it warns against short hair on a square face... I can see with a square face shape - having had a quick look - that you could look a woman with a square face shape could look a bit Evil Edna (Will o' the Wisp...takes me back!) with shorter hair:

Don't mean to sound rude but I think it needs careful consideration (this is from someone who twice went really short and regretted it each time, even with a sideswept fringe and an oval-ish face...it takes a long time to grow back and it can be a PITA during the grow-out!) I really think you'd suit, from what I can see of your face, this long-ish bob with sideswept fringe:

media.onsugar.com/files/ons4/2010/01/01/272/2725246/1c79506a9e8f146c_Shoulder_Length_Hairstyles_6.jpg

You could always go shorter but, from experience, I'd do it gradually because it's a nightmare to regrow if you hate it!

LeoandBoosmum · 19/01/2015 02:27

Oh sorry...just read you don't mind the growing out phase....so....

Olivia Colman has a face shape similar to yours as far as I can tell, and perhaps a similar hair type?

Here is her face shape:

and

And, while I think she looks better with long hair and a fringe here:

static.bips.channel4.com/bips/orig/peep-show/articles/4ce46d9f-f031-4662-be4a-913634f91b2a.jpg
and even without a fringe here:

I do think she looks great in these shorter styles:

Thank you, this really helps focus my mind a bit more. Can google again with a bit more of an idea!

I think you need to channel Melissa McBride in the Walking dead here (I knew that programme must be good for something eventually :o)

and she kicks ass

You'll look great. You can have piecey fringe sections that you can wear as a sideswept fringe or wear more up/off your face if you're feeling bolder. (IME having shorter hair will make you feel bolder)

AnyFucker · 19/01/2015 12:49

I have the same style as Michelle Williams here

BlueberryWafer · 19/01/2015 12:53

This would look fab with your hair type and face shape :) easy to style too! Ask for a cropped hair cut with sweeping bangs Smile

chockbic · 19/01/2015 12:55

Would it work with curly hair?

Might be more Simon Amstell Confused

FindMeAPixie · 19/01/2015 12:59

Actually, if you ignore the face, Simon Amstell's hair here is pretty good Grin

Grin he's got a nice face actually.

FindMeAPixie · 19/01/2015 13:04

Yep, agree...but not really very...uh...feminine... wonders about channelling some stubble to go with the grey Grin

I've got a Michelle Williams cut. People love it, except my ex who used it as a reason as to why he left!!! It is so easy to manage and gets loads of positive comments though.

AnyFucker · 19/01/2015 13:13

Brand, I would consider that a result Smile

noddyholder · 19/01/2015 13:13

Michelle williams looks great anything really short and pixie needs a really firm jaw imho I love short hair but don't suit so am very envious

AnyFucker · 19/01/2015 13:15

sue perkins has quite a strong jawline and really suits a crop

VenusRising · 19/01/2015 13:20

It's not about the chin or jawline imvho, but about the neck and shoulders, and skin texture.

Some people suit a short crop as they have sylph like shoulders and neck, and some look best with hair that's a bit longer.

Why don't you change the colour of your hair first OP and then think about having the chop.

I don't think short hair would suit you to be brutally honest, as it doesnt suit you pulled back. I like the texture of your hair, it's gives balance to your face and shoulders.

NeitherHereOrThere · 19/01/2015 13:29

I have a strong jaw and rock a short pixie style Grin

Try googling Audrey Tautou as she has curly hair and looks great with a pixie crop.

I would go for this route if I want to ditch the dye - much easier to grow out a pixie than to have to keep faffing around trying to grow out the dye with longer hair.

chockbic · 19/01/2015 13:40

Are you going to bleach it first?

Milmingebag · 19/01/2015 14:35

I think you would suit a pixie. To make it work I think it would have to be messy and longer/lifted at the crown. Your curls would mean this would be easy to achieve with a bit of hair putty. Keep it short at the sides to elongate your face. You face looks more oval than square to me.

Milmingebag · 19/01/2015 14:47

this is another gorgeous pixie which I think would work for you.

FindMeAPixie · 19/01/2015 15:52

Milme with my non-existent styling ability "messy" is a given. I spent from mid teens to above 3 years ago not owing a hairdryer - and only got one now for DD's hair! As to face shape - I have always really struggled to define it so you may be right. Still think I look awful with my face fully exposed tbh so am intrigues by the very "exposing" styles you have linked to.

Venus tbh my view is that even if the pixie is not a great cut for me I would prefer it to the ever lengthening badger stripe as I grow the dye out. That makes me shudder.

I have got wide shoulders and can carry excess weight on the tops of my arms - so I will have to be careful (although have a nice neck to go with it). I think I need some "size" to the pixie to avoid me looking like a pin-head. Saying that, I am size 10-12 and have reasonable cheekbones, great eyes and for my age pretty good skin. . I know I will need to wear a tad more make-up and maybe grab some statement earrings (not Pat Butcher).

As a teen I attracted a lot of positive attention when I had really, really short hair as it made my eyes the real focus. Just want some focus to talk to my hairdresser about. Dread the thought of coming out with a granny cut (a real danger with the curls) so I want to know what to ask for iyswim.
