Argh I've got a haircut that needs blowdrying and I'm shite at it. Help?

I have horse's hair. It's massively thick and coarse. I've spent two years growing out a butcher job thanks to a lovely hairdresser who has selfishly moved away, so tried new one out.

She took lots of weight out of it, it looked lovely when she dried it, but I've tried myself (using only technique I can manage; blast with hairdryer and then straighten) and it's all bloody flicky.

I HATE blow drying and I'm rubbish at it but clearly going to have to improve till it grows out. Any good tips, guides you can recommend?

Babyliss big hair!

teawamutu · 08/01/2015 22:18

I've been wondering about that. But the LAST thing I need is bigger hair, trust me - does the BBH smoosh down if needed?

Yes.
Bbh will become your best friend.

PhoebeMcPeePee · 08/01/2015 22:32

I've got similar sounding hair - very coarse & bloody masses of it & the BBH does make it much smoother & similar to a good wavy blow-dry but Jesus wept it takes an age to do & I still get in a tangle sometimes.

teawamutu · 08/01/2015 22:32

So it smooshes hair down and can be used by the hirsuitically incompetent?

Damn, mn costs me a fortune...

Xpost, phoebe. Do you start from sopping wet?

BabyLiss Big Hair.

Now, if not sooner. Go.

NormHonal · 08/01/2015 22:36

Start from as dry as possible. I wash, clip/tie back, do the school run, and then dry, and my hair is about the right sogginess level then.

It can be done from really wet hair, but you get more frizz then.

Definitely Babyliss Big Hair, it's the only thing that deals with my layers, as my blow-drying technique isn't very good. Once my hair is 90% dry, I use BBH to smooth my layers so that they're not flicking out, and then I spend a few minutes with the straighteners, just to finish things off. The whole process takes under 10 minutes.

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 09:08

YYYYYYYYYY to the BBH. I have thick, frizzy, wavy hair and it is the only thing that smooths it. I've never mastered the art of blow drying, so just blast it with the hairdryer until it's almost dry, section it off and go through it with the BBH, making sure that I've pressed the right button to either get the hair turned under or out, and hold it taut, pulling it out as you go (it's hard to explain, but it will become obvious as you start to use it). Depending on what 'look' I'm going for I either go over it again with the straighteners or I just leave it.

Result is swishy, smooth hair. It will transform your hair, if not your life. to the BBH.

Damn, mn costs me a fortune...
I hear ya - it's £35 from Debenhams on line right now with free delivery on orders over £30.
I've succumbed!

teawamutu · 09/01/2015 11:50

I've ordered it. Smile 19.99 from sainsburys. Arrives tomorrow night: shamefully excited.

That's a bargain at £19.99 !!!

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 14:35

Just been onto the Sainsbury website, and the 42mm one is on sale for £19.99!! Does anyone know how I check out though - it says I need to spend £25, is that right?

Greengardenpixie · 09/01/2015 14:40

There are a number of reviews that say the big hair is rubbish:

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 14:42

Ignore the MN naysayers. Honestly, it's the best thing ever - check out the Amazon reviews and just about every other review there is.

squoosh · 09/01/2015 14:44

The Babyliss Big Hair is the best thing for the blowdryingly backward. It doesn't make my hair much bigger really, but it does make it much sleeker and more swooshy.

£20 is a great price.

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 14:58

Qu'est que c'est, "For the blowdryingly backward" Squooshie??!

squoosh · 09/01/2015 15:01

The 'blowdryinglay backward' are those people who turn their hair into a knotted bird's nest when attempting to create perfect bouffants with a separate hairbrush and hairdryer.

Rojak · 09/01/2015 15:02

I smooth the ends of my hair down with some oil after the BBH - sits really nice

CarbeDiem · 09/01/2015 15:07

My hair is like yours when long.
I used to use those velcro roller thingies - shoved on the ends (but not really in a curl iykwim) when I'd finished drying/straightening. A spritz of hairspray and left for 5/10 mins done the trick.

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 15:11

Ah, that blowdryingly backward. I thought you'd been reading the Korean instructions out loud

vomistheworst · 09/01/2015 21:16

what's the difference between the effects of the 42mm one and whatever the other one is?

SirChenjin · 09/01/2015 23:02

The other one is 50mm - the 42mm is for shorter hair (collar length or shorter, I think)

VenusRising · 10/01/2015 00:15

You could just let it go 'curly girl' style and embrace your natural curls.

Just a thought!
