Howdy!

You may know that the BaByliss Big Hair recently became a Mumsnet Best. You may even be among those who let us know about it by posting your reviews here.

As Big Hair Talk comes around every Christmas, we decided to invest and put together this video so you can judge for yourself what all the fuss is about! Do have a watch and share on the thread your thoughts or, if you have one already, your top tips!

Ooh – and don't forget to let us know what other style and beauty vids you'd like to see (we're always after fresh ideas for our shiny new YouTube channel - you can subscribe here if you haven't already!).

Wishing you added oomph and swish in the New Year!

Agree that it's just not the way to use it, I'd end up with a right old frizz bomb if I did it like that! You can get lots of volume using the BBH bit you have to take it to the roots.

OttiliaVonBCup · 30/12/2014 19:29

That's not how I use it.
I hold the hair strand tight while BBH rotates under it.

nipersvest · 30/12/2014 19:59

oh dear oh dear oh dear.

using it on towel dried hair is asking for trouble, it would burn the motor out in no time.

Mintyy · 30/12/2014 23:26

Yes, I have impossibly straight fine hair and thought about buying one of these gizmos. So watched the vid ... then decided against! Her hairstyle at the end is utterly underwhelming, surely?

beggarsCantBeChoosers · 31/12/2014 00:15

I purchased one but find although it gives a lovely bounce, it makes my hair look frizzy and split ended because the barrel blows the hair shaft in different directions.

If I use my hairdryer I can ensure the nozzle only goes in one same direction resulting in smooth, glossy hair Shock

Can anyone tell me their tricks to prevent this?

SirChenjin · 31/12/2014 08:09

You have to do it in smallish sections on almost dry hair, and keep the hair taut as you rotate and pull. The barrel only blows air onto that section, so shouldn't be blowing the hair in different directions if you keep it taut.

I find if I leave my hair to cool before pulling my hands through to 'set' it the style holds better.

vomistheworst · 31/12/2014 11:53

I'm a bit confused about this. I have super frizzy, wavy, crazy hair. There's not a lot of it, but it's full of volume (and not in a good way). The end result of this video clip is what my hair looks like after I've straightened it to buggery and squished it as flat as I can with serum etc. How is my hair at its straightest and flattest somehow suddenly 'big hair'?

SirChenjin · 31/12/2014 12:05

The video clip does not show the BBH at its best and hasn't been used correctly

Mintyy · 31/12/2014 12:08

Which is a shame

ElizabethHoover · 31/12/2014 12:55

No statement from mnhq?

Darkchocsprinkles · 31/12/2014 13:12

Reckon they're having a bad hair day Grin

HaloItsMeFell · 31/12/2014 15:05

I am loath to criticise such a nice young woman Grin but she's doing it all wrong. She hasn't actually got any volume into the hair at all has she? Which kind of defeats the object of the Babyliss Big Hair really. Confused

I am devoted to mine, I'm on my second one, but you really do need to rough blast your hair almost completely dry getting some volume in at the roots first, then do as she does working though layers/sections at a time. Her hair is virtually identical in style and fineness thickness to mine, but I get much more bounce and volume to mine that she has managed.

Still love my BBH though. would save it if the house were on fire.

HaloItsMeFell · 31/12/2014 15:07

hahaha I see I am not the only fire saver!

LynetteScavo · 31/12/2014 16:29

I'm glad everyone's saying what I was thinking. I can blow dry my hair "big" with a decent dryer and brush in 15 mins...but then I've had 20 years practice.

Marshy · 31/12/2014 19:16

I had one of these for Christmas and love it!

I have just above shoulder length hair, grown fairly recently from short. It looks great when professionally blowdried but I was struggling to get a good look myself and was considering having it cut short again but don't need to now thanks to BBC.

I found the video clip useful for basic tips but agree that the end result shown is underwhelming.

I've not used it on wet hair. Had great results on 80% dry and then refreshed it next day using a heat defence spray to add a bit of wetness. No need for straighteners at all and overall I think I've used much less heat than usual which has got to be good.

Very happy!

Marshy · 31/12/2014 19:18

BBC?? Err...BBH obvs thanks autocorrect

Chocolategirl7 · 31/12/2014 19:40

I have better hair using a BBH than the girl in the video! Wow - that's a first. Defo not the best example!

SlinkyB · 31/12/2014 22:40

Agree the video is bad - looks like the woman is doing it all wrong?! You blow dry your hair til 80% dry, then roll your hair around the Big Hair barrel and hold it at the root for a few seconds. That's what gives your hair the body.

I've only got fine, shoulder-length hair, so the whole process takes about ten mins.

Sorry MNHQ but I agree this isn't a good advert for the fab BBH.

slalomsuki · 01/01/2015 09:07

I've used my BigHair for a couple of years on frizzy curly hair to tame it and its great. Gives a smooth styled look in about 5mins.

That video is a terrible demonstration of what it can do. It should be used on nearly dry hair to get the effect.

Not sure I would have been convinced to buy it based on that video.

GingerSkin · 01/01/2015 12:22

I was considering buying one of the but the clip has put me off.

I have long, fine straight hair - but lots of it (so not thick but plenty of hair!). I think I'd just get into a pickle with it and knot my hair!

JustJanice · 01/01/2015 13:23

Ginger - your hair sounds like mine. I've got a BBH and get lovely volume with it. That video as said before is in no way indicative of how the BBH should be used or of the results that can be achieved.

TheCowThatLaughs · 01/01/2015 13:35

I'm glad I saw this thread. Have had the BBH for about a year but for some reason never thought to look on you tube for tutorials. I've just had a look and I was using it wrongly I think, like the woman in the video above and wasn't very impressed with it. I was thinking of giving it away but I'm going to have another try with it today and see if i can get a bit more out of it!

BeautifulPain · 01/01/2015 14:13

I have to agree if I had seen this video first I would not have purchased one, her hair just looks flat .

homebythesea · 01/01/2015 14:51

Please MNHQ take this video down and do another one! You need someone with slightly wild hair to show its transformative qualities! It really is a wonder but not on already straight fine hair. The whole point is that it smooths and gives swish to not smooth/swishy hair. And you use it on nearly dry hair- it's not a dryer!

YesAnastasia · 01/01/2015 17:05

God, I love my BBH. I'm on my 2nd in 5 years (when the first one broke, I had a new one within hours)

I too dry my hair first, styling when it's slightly damp. I concentrate on the roots, do it in sections then pull the ends out with the roller moving.

It deserves to be a Mumsnet best - it's so good.
