I look like a fucking hedgehog

I had my hair cut short in summer - it looked fabulous Smile and I've still been pleased with every cut since. Until today.

I now look like a frumpy middle aged woman with the obligatory menopausal haircut instead of a youngish 47 year old with funky, cool short hair.

Yes, I know it will grow, but I feel like not stepping out in public til it does. I feel hugely exposed with a fringe half way up my forehead - never mind the risk of people seeing the angry red psoriasis patches on my hairline.

Hairdresser said she gets scared using the clippers, that cutting my hair makes her arms ache, that she's nervous of cutting my ear, and could I slump down in the chair because I'm too tall.

It's the end of another beautiful relationship Confused

Sorry it's long - I needed to get all that off my chest - dc are trying to be kind by saying it looks fine. It does NOT look fucking fine. I look like a man.Shock

Smartiepants same stylist that did it 5 weeks ago! I know she remembered me because we chatted about things I'd mentioned last time. She did it fine then, no idea what happened yesterday!

I agree OP, the first cut is lovely though you DO have colour through, lifting it. I'd expect, at the very least a free next cut, some styling product to "do" it with whilst it groes longer.

The problem with short hair I persoanlly found, was that it grew very quickly and there was just a smidge between "just right" and too long/too short. Hence, I now have long hair.

RojaGato · 12/12/2014 22:40

Oh dear, that's a shame. My last haircut was similar- she cut layers in to encourage the curl (why?) and now my hair is back in a french roll everyday til it grows.

What about some scarves, headbands and accessories to reintroduce the cool element?

Something like these could flatten your fringe down to make it look longer, or could cover your hairline whilst you tuck the fringe in, or you could get a clip in fringe and hid the join with a headband. With vintage make up and accessories (red lip and nails for a 40s/50s look, black eyeliner and pale lip for a 60s look) you could really tone done the menopausal element and get back in control.

You could also try an art deco brooch offset to one side

An ear cuff might also come in useful to make the overall thing look more youthful and modern.

polyhymnia · 12/12/2014 22:45

Aaaargh, another use of menopausal to mean frumpy or worse. Why?

Fwiw, I also think from the photos of the OP that a 'red lip' wouldn't be flattering with her colouring - too harsh .

polyhymnia · 12/12/2014 22:47

Also, scarves can be nice and useful, but since when have they been cool?

Awks · 12/12/2014 23:00

Because when you are menopausal yourself, you can feel frumpy and crapper than you've ever felt in your life before. I don't know any menopausal women who feel fabulous whilst in the midst of it so for me, it's an apt description.

But back on topic to OP, your hair is no way as horrendous as you think it is. It's a bit short but nothing that a fortnight wont sort out though I do understand how you feel Can you slick back behind your ears, the boxy sides?

Milmingebag · 13/12/2014 00:17

That is a bad haircut. It's blocky and too heavy on top and around the sides. The way she has cut it across the ears is horrid- I completely get where you are coming from.

On the plus side it is salvageable but it needs thinning out massively to disguise the blunt lines and then some matte putty to texturise it so it grows into the style you like.

If you buy thinning scissors and do it yourself you could sort it out. I wouldn't go back there again.

Milmingebag · 13/12/2014 00:19

Ps the hair is more Lego head than hedgehog. Get your money back from this dreadful hairdressers.

burnishedsilver · 13/12/2014 00:34

Yes, lego head is a good description. It's not a good cut but it's fixable.

chocismydrug · 13/12/2014 07:52

OP, I also think the glasses from the first pic suit you lot better. I think.the frame in th second pair is partly to blame for the blunt look. but agree, the haircut is dreadful.

Jinglebells99 · 13/12/2014 08:10

I think the hair colour of the first haircut is what makes it look lovely so maybe think of getting highlights. Did you get the colour done in salon?. I also think it was perhaps unfair to leave an online review before contacting the salon. Her response indicates that she would like the opportunity to put it right.

TongueBiter · 13/12/2014 08:27

Glasses are a WHOLE other story lol. I promise you my current ones looked fine with my previous style Smile

Yes it wasn't my finest action, leaving the review. I was actually looking for their number online when I came across the review site - I had been properly bawling my eyes out 10 mins before, and didn't trust myself to be able to even speak about it or go back in without making a sobbing spectacle of myself.

Aah I know the feeling. I had someone new do my colour once and she managed to miss out a whole section. My regular stylist, the owner, was away, and I felt really upset. The stylist was crap too when I went back, kept me waiting for ages. She didn't last long at the salon, but thinking back, the salon didn't treat me that well either as although they put it right, I wasn't offered anything for the inconvenience of having to go back. Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Greengardenpixie · 13/12/2014 11:33

I think if you chop into those bits at the sides it will make it much better. Hope you get it sorted :) Are you going today? If so..updated pics please :)

TongueBiter · 13/12/2014 11:57

Yes, I've been back! He agreed with all my points, tried to even the sides as best he could, but acknowledged it would be better to leave the short side to grow rather than clip the other side that short. Took lots more weight out of it too. And refunded me.

Will post another pic when I get to my laptop. It's still a bit too spiky on top for my liking, but I feel happier now.

Did I mention he looks like Damien Lewis

Thanks for all the sympathy and suggestions! Smile

Glad you've got it sorted as well as possible.

TongueBiter · 13/12/2014 13:04

Thanks MrsD. I just have a 'thing' about my forehead showing. Sounds daft but it threw me waaaay past my comfort zone.

Ok, pics - lying on the sofa so a bit wonky.

I think the shock factor has diminished somewhat for me now!

That does look a lot nicer, you're very fortunate to have the bone structure to take a short cut, I wish I could but I'm too jowly!

I had a bad cut once recently - twas my own fault, usual lovely hairdresser on mat leave and got a groupon voucher to have it cheaply cut elseswhere. Ended up slinking back to usual hairdressers to get one of the other senior stylists to sort it out, luckily it was a layering mess so slightly easier to rectify, it feels horrible when your hair isn't right.

darkness · 13/12/2014 13:32

I have a very short style to and just about a week ago had hit that
"OMG how crap do I look I need to grow it I could just cry" stage even though other people were saying it looked great
then I was out shopping and caught sight of myself in completely surround mirrors
and actually its a beautiful cut from almost every angle but because the straight on front view is different i was getting very blue..

I think yours from the photo is actually looks fine, and probably even better now
ok its not the lightly feathered look you had before
and you so need to lift it up off your face.a little like burnished silvers very well found photo shows
.you do look a little like your trying to make what could be an even funkier cut look a bit EMO - I dont know why your trying to hide behind your hair ? your face is beautiful , and I would not go blonde if I was you but much much more red ! stand out !
life is not about trying to be wallpaper,

darkness · 13/12/2014 13:33

ohh brilliant !

Oh, I'm pleasantly surprised. Its lovely :-)

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 13/12/2014 13:54

Ah that's much better. I figured they could take some weight out of it to make all the difference, glad you went back. For what it's worth I think it looks great and quite funky
