Trying too hard?

I'm 48, and realise that now I have to put a little more effort into looking good or at least presentable, both in time and the products I use.Recently I have noticed a trend in ladies of my more mature age maybe trying a little too hard. Am I alone in thinking this? you know, over dyed, coiffured hair, tons of make up and clothes and jewellery more suited to strictly(and this is while out shopping!) Maybe its me and I need to try even harder, but personally I think its a bit much.

Good grief, some of you seem intent to make everything a political issue - give yourself a pat on the back and a night off. Please.

Floisme · 07/12/2014 22:57

What's wrong with mixing style and politics? Can't we be interested in both?

burnishedsilver · 07/12/2014 23:02

I disagree op. I haven't noticed that at all. I have noticed that teens are into way heaver make up than we were.

Eustasiavye · 07/12/2014 23:16

I too think it's harder for young women.

All around them is what I call the porn look. Fake boobs, flesh on display, fake eyelashes, fake tan, fake hair , fake nails, ridiculously high heels and make up troweled on.
I don't see many older women having to conform to this image.

I do think it's acceptable now for older women to care about their appearance. When I was young I remember thinking how beautiful my mum seemed compare to friend's mums who always seemed to be dressed in aprons!

Floisme, pick your battles. I come to S&B for a bit of light relief not to hear you pontificating and finger wagging on every thread. Take it to other parts of the forum now and again please.

Floisme · 08/12/2014 07:03

Sofa I'm sorry you don't like the direction this thread has taken but that's how it goes sometimes and you can't control it any more than I can. When I lose interest in a thread I stop reading it - I don't come on and throw a stop about it.

I agree Eustasiavye. A lot of teenage girls look like Barbie clones these days. DD is 14 and an awful lot of her peers have those vacuous looking selfies on Facebook complete with heavy makeup and duck pout.

DD thinks they look as ridiculous as I do.

KatieKaye · 08/12/2014 07:34

I think overdone eyebrows are really ageing, no matter what age you are.

I wear bright lipstick in winter to give some colour as I'm very pale. I'm 51 and now wondering if I should switch to discrete nudes even if I will look like I'm about to pass out!

CateBlanket · 08/12/2014 07:42

Katie - no way! Channel your inner Kristin Scott Thomas (aged 53 for those who insist on adding a number) and wear your red lippy Smile

KatieKaye · 08/12/2014 08:03

Thank you!
I only read this thread after I'd got
ready for work and am wearing a medium crimson, which I thought was quite seasonal

Eustasiavye · 08/12/2014 08:29

Sales of red lipstick soar over the Christmas period.
Keep wearing your lippy with confidence!

Another thought, perhaps 'older' women have more time and money (and sense!) to spend on themselves rather than concentrating on other people.

MilkThistle187 · 08/12/2014 10:30

I'm 45 and find these threads really depressing. Is this what's facing me - other women judging me for my taste in raspberry lipstick and cat's bum faces at my penchant for sparkly hair clips?

As an antidote I like to watch , no 'no make up make up' for Grace Grin

MilkThistle187 · 08/12/2014 10:31

She is 66 btw
