How to get big, scruffy waves

I'm contemplating cutting my currently boob length hair to shoulder length, but I want it to look something like these

My hair is thick and naturally straight although I do straighten it because it looks a mess otherwise.

I'm a bit crap with doing anything other than straightening my hair or putting it up in a ponytail!

Does anyone have any tips for how to get waves like in the images, and how to keep them? TIA!

I had my hair cut shorter to do this a few years back, but found that it was too much hassle to do every morning, and I don't have a toddler to contend with...

Good luck tonight, though!

Nope it looked shit - I tried pigtails this time and had two big kinks from the bobbles like when people take their hair down after having it in a pony for too long, it was still slightly wet and looked a mess. Didn't have time to try tongs this morning but that's next!

If I get it cut I need to be able to put it up still! last time I had it cut shorter I regretted it instantly!

Would a sock bun work for my very fine neck length hair?

Redtartanshoes · 28/11/2014 09:20

I don't do it when mine is wet, I just damp it with my hand or a water spray. If it feels damp before I take out I blast with hair dryer

Are you putting the first ponytail on the very top of your head?

LackingCommonSense · 28/11/2014 10:02

It's not quite pineapple style, it's slightly back from that... is that right?
I did it with damp hair the first time but it wouldn't stay in and had come out by the morning Sad

Right I am now the proud owner of one of those Mark Hill wand thingies as I've just braved the Boots Black Friday crowds especially. Annoyingly I had a voucher for £5 off if I spent over £30, and it was £29.99. Angry

Let us know how you get on with it, which one did you get?

I took a pic of my hair this morning after using my tongs for 10 mins but can't figure out how to edit my face out lol

They didn't have the rock wand someone mentioned in store but they had another one where the only difference I can see is one end being slightly narrower than the other. Going to try it when DS is napping and taking a stroll to the hairdressers to book later so hopefully it works!

I wouldn't know how to blur my face out either!

I put mine as high as I can. Bobble for pony tail, wrap it round sock then another bobble or two to secure it as you would a bun?

LackingCommonSense · 29/11/2014 09:39

Do you roll the sock up into a donut first or wrap your hair around it and tie?

This is a revelation. It's Christmas do season, which invariably means I attempt curly hair. I usually use heated tongs but get bored half way through/ arms start to ache, so one side of my hair is more polished than the other. This is great, as it's minimum effort on the day. Thanks!!

LackingCommonSense · 29/11/2014 11:35

I can't work out if it looks scruffy in a good way or just like I literally rolled out bed and didn't brush it... Hmm

This is the best 'editing' I could come up with Grin

This was 10 mins of using the tongs. Holding them upside down so the barrel is facing down, winding away from face and keeping the ends free.

Spritzed with salt spray after and ruffle through.

If I was going out I would add more waves but then would take longer than 10 mins.

I do have a Remington tapered end wand but find it really hard to use

Lacking Grin

Was they easy to use?

LackingCommonSense · 29/11/2014 12:09

The hairdressers said it looked good Smile all booked in for Thursday!

hmm ish..I found it easier than when I tried to do it with tongs before but I did manage to burn my fingers more than once! I burnt much more than that when I first started using straightners though so I'm sure I'll get better. I think it might be easier with shorter hair too?

Oooh just seen you've put a pic up but I can't see on my phone! will get the laptop out..

That looks great. If only i could get my hair like that without using heated appliances though. My hair is fine and the overnight sock bun doesn't work for me,my hair looks scraggly and i've tried it a few times.

LackingCommonSense · 29/11/2014 12:22

That's exactly how I want it! it looks lovely Grin and festive Wink

I've stumbled across this on YouTube so might give it a go too..

Don't know how to do links on the app sorry!

Thanks :)

It's really easy when you get the hang of it, I get two days of west out of it then stick it up on the third day.

I can't see the video, what does she do?
I've seen one where you put your hair in pigtails, twist the hair round and round and then clamp the straighteners over them but have never tried it.

Tbh all the no heat techniques never work on my hair, my friend who has beautiful long and thick hair can get away with everything

Fcukfifa · 29/11/2014 12:31

Wear**

LackingCommonSense · 29/11/2014 12:41

It's hard to explain she splits it into two then twists it down right from the front almost like a french plait but just twisting, then twists what's left at the bottom into buns, secure and leave overnight. Of course it looks amazing on the video!

I've just never been that adventurous because I find it so difficult!

Definitely more successful than the sock bun! not really big waves though, just curly.
