I want to take a stab at contouring

But I read somewhere that you shouldn't buy the kits as you'll probably have most of what you need already.

I already have touche eclat, foundation in my tone, compact powder in my tone and blusher that's probably too pink.

What should be on my shopping list?

And for a bonus point, can anyone recommend good blusher?

Marking my place

MrsTShelby, I use Touche Eclat for basic highlighting (at the top of the apples of the cheeks, then patted up to the eye, a la Goss, down the bridge of my nose, and between the brows.) It's very light and subtle and works well.

(At the moment I'm applying my serums and moisturisers/letting them soak in. Will commence scary contouring soon!)

Ah that's good Fabulassie as I do have touché éclat rolling around in my vast make up bag somewhere!

Update how you get on with the contouring - would love to know how it works out.

I actually think KK looks great in photos and although I wouldn't go as extreme as she does I think it would be excellent for nights out over christmas.

I would like to perfect a light look for daytime too as I have no cheekbones.

I didn't follow the KK video - I did the one where Wayne Goss makes up a middle-aged woman.

And it turned out OK! I say "OK" because I'm not normally one for cream makeup. It's very heavy coverage!

I used a combination of Rimmel concealer for highlight, Sleek cream foundation for contour/dark (Sleek is one of the few drugstore lines that caters to people of colour and I needed a chocolate brown), and a mix of Max Factor Pan Stick and a Bobbi Brown cream foundation stick to make a foundation that matches my skin tone.

I used a concealer brush to put on the contour, just applied the highlight (concealer) from the tube, and a complexion/not-quite-stippling brush to mix and apply the skin tone foundation. I suppose Mr. Goss has really great cream foundations (this whole exercise would have likely been easier if I'd had three Bobbi Brown sticks.) I suspect his brush is perfect, too. I have a lot of brushes but I can't afford to buy a whole bunch of the big MAC brushes.

Once I did my brows, lips, and a smokey eye, I looked pretty good - but it's an awful lot of makeup. Probably best for night time. I will say that there's no streakiness like I get with powder contour (cf the Lisa Eldridge video above - while the overall look is nicer in terms of lighter coverage, I do think there are streaks under the cheekbones.)

Wanted to add that I did add some Touche Eclat between under eye and cheekbone and between brows once the creams were all blended, and I used a fair amount of powder carefully pressed into the skin. So, it's a heavy look but it does look great.

I know I'd end up looking like the tin man. Not sure I'd attempt this unless I was a trained makeup artist tbh. Most amateur attempts look ridiculous (that one who used to be in Corrie, for example!)
