I want to take a stab at contouring

But I read somewhere that you shouldn't buy the kits as you'll probably have most of what you need already.

I already have touche eclat, foundation in my tone, compact powder in my tone and blusher that's probably too pink.

What should be on my shopping list?

And for a bonus point, can anyone recommend good blusher?

Such not suc Hmm.

That said, her make up being entirely suited to photography and completely unrealistic in RL is sort of a metaphor for her form of celebrity, isn't it? Kim Kardashian is a self created and self perpetuating media product who doesn't really seem to exist (or want to) outside of the media spotlight and so that her entire image is geared toward her being viewed through the lens is entirely is no surprise.

MyCrazyLife · 26/11/2014 12:12

Oh, I'm glad this is here, I've also taken a Stab at contouring today! Really want my nose to look more defined less fat in my wedding pics.

I've been taking photos and it does look a lot better - but I think my nose looks a bit brown in the flesh?! Couldn't find any lighter bronzed than this.

Don't want to walk down the aisle and DP think Confused what the fuck is wrong with her face? Even if it does result in good pics...

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 26/11/2014 12:16

Don't use bronzer. It doesn't look like natural shadow.

SoMuchForSubtlety · 26/11/2014 12:25

The shadow bit has to be both cool and matte I think, not shimmery and warm like bronzer.

Two shades of your normal foundation would work I think (disclaimer : haven't tried) - I need two shades anyway since I change skin colour between summer and winter so I blend them together...

MyCrazyLife · 26/11/2014 12:37

Oh ffs that was a waste of money :( all the brown eyeshadows were too dark, or had glitter in.

So what should I use?!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/11/2014 12:43

Oh please don't, I think it looks utterly bizarreGrin it's like a make up artist has had a bored 5 minutes and thought "I know, I fancy a laugh, let's get everyone to wander round like stripy badgers"Grin

squoosh · 26/11/2014 12:47

Maybe it looks bizarre on your face, sorry if that's the case. My cheekbones however look fantastic.

MyCrazyLife · 26/11/2014 13:35

I don't think it looks bizarre either... Actually I've never ever noticed that someone has been "contoured". Yet looking over at pictures etc my friends' noses seem to be inexplicably thinner...

StatisticallyChallenged · 26/11/2014 13:37

It's all about getting the right tone. As several people have said for a lot of people bronzer is totally wrong and doesn't give the impression of natural shade. The Illamasqua stuff I use just looks like a shadow once blended - it's totally matte, no glitter etc.

Skinheadmermaid · 26/11/2014 13:50

Actual contouring was created for camera and television work. Its not for everyday use, as other posters have pointed out, it looks a bit weird in natural daylight.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/11/2014 13:55

Listen to Skin, she knows what she's talking aboutGrin

It doesn't look bizarre on me because I haven't tried it because IT'S NOT FOR EVERY DAY USE. Unless you are on telly there's no reason to do it ime ever

Don't listen to me Winktry it but ask people you trust if it looks ok as there are plenty of people who clearly don't have family and mates who care enough not to let them leave the house looking dreadful.

I was only messing around hence the use of smilies, this is light hearted chat about a bit of blusher but knock yourself out with the personal insults if it makes you feel better.

Fabulassie · 26/11/2014 14:09

I do use a bronzer powder but only under my cheekbones and up into my temples. I also apply Touche Eclat onto my upper cheekbones. I blend all this with a bit of translucent powder. As far as I know (having craned my neck in the mirror and having asked friends) I do not look weird. That said, I think people are sort of used to seeing something a bit "streaky" under cheekbones. I mean, eyeshadow doesn't look at all natural: we're just used to it.

squoosh · 26/11/2014 14:12

When you stop being patronising I'll stop telling you you're patronising. Seems like a reasonable compromise.

itsbetterthanabox · 26/11/2014 14:14

A matte light bronzer or foundation/concealer in a few shades darker than your skin and a highlighter or very pale illuminating concealer.
Highlighter first and it goes on cheekbones, forehead, centre of nose and brow bone.
Then Bronzer goes around hairline and jawline, under cheekbones and down side if nose.
Then blend very well with a big face brush so there are no harsh lines.
Use blush in apples of cheeks
If you have overdone any at all then blend more and apply loose powder.

Fabulassie · 26/11/2014 14:22

Well, I suppose this is about as good as it can get (and I like how we get to see her face from the sides). Do you think this looks good? I'm not entirely sure...

NotEvenAnEnormouseStirred · 26/11/2014 14:39

I think I look alright with it. I'd do it more often if I wasn't so lazy.

Applied with a light hand, in a matte shade close to your skintone it can look nice.

As with all make up, if you don't blend properly or go to heavy or too dark, of course you're going to look like a mad badger.

OttiliaVonBCup · 26/11/2014 14:44

I usually use Nars Cap Vert Multiple.

It blends in beautifully.
I do have cheekbones to start with, but sometimes I need some help.

If you use powder you need a good brush. I have a very old angled one and always brush off the excess product at the beginning.

TheTravellingLemon · 26/11/2014 15:54

I agree that KK style would look odd walking down the street, but it looked amazing on my friend. I didn't know that's what it was, I just told her that her makeup looked lovely and she told me that's what she'd done.

I promise to dial down on the crazed badger Smile

Fab- half way through that clip I was starting to think it looked ok but I just think it looks really dated I'm ancient though, I remember stripy blusher from the first time round What a gorgeously pretty model though! I do like the high lighter in the inner eye corner, that really lifts her eyes.

Fabulassie · 26/11/2014 18:48

Yes, I think the highlights around the eyes, between brows, etc can look great. I'm just not so sure about the dark contour. She looks very nice but I'm not convinced she looks better than she already did.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/11/2014 21:29

Oh dear, I'm watching Ladies of London, Caprice is sporting a badly contoured lookGrin

Fabulassie · 27/11/2014 12:55

Well, I'm going to give the Wayne Goss method a try: I've bought a very light (and creamy enough) concealer by Rimmel to use for the light bits, and then a good chocolate brown cream foundation by Sleek, and I already have a Bobbi Brown cream foundation stick in my shade. It's not clear what sort of brush he's using to put on the skin tone foundation so I hope I can approximate it with the brush I have.

This should be interesting!

MrsTShelby · 27/11/2014 13:26

I have just ordered Illamasqua hollow cream pigment to have a go at some light handed contouring. I am so pale and washed out am hoping this will make me look a bit more alive.

What highlighter does everyone use?

Am also wondering whether it will work with ELDW foundation that I use as it is matte but am so oily anything else looks awful.
