Have received this text:

"I am going to a wedding on Saturday as a evening guest and am wearing a nice jacket and waist coat with a shirt..do you think nice jeans are acceptable or not? What would mumsnet say?!"

On further questionning:

"Really, evening invite only is fine"
"Hmmm they will be darker blue then clarkson"
"I have a pink or blue shirt to wear"

Ok, style and beauty mumsnetters, what can you suggest?

he says his target market is daughters of rich estate owners

In that case he's got it completely wrong.

He will look like the gamekeeper's son without a clue how to dress for a wedding.

Twinklestein · 16/11/2014 21:54

If he wants to pull tell him to wear a kilt. Wink

nevercackle · 16/11/2014 21:56

for sure, but i think kilt is overkill for an evening invite no?

Twinklestein · 16/11/2014 21:59

Not at all, it's fine.

GarlicNovember · 16/11/2014 22:26

Sadly, Twinkle's right! Posh birds are not remotely fooled by budget tweed jackets. It hasn't got the right stitching round the edges or, probably, the right kind of lining. If you're aiming for proper posh, it's better buy second-hand or hire something. Mind you, there's no point trying to look filthy rich if you aren't so he's better advised to wear something he just likes!

I thought you had to have family connections to wear a kilt credibly?

nevercackle · 16/11/2014 22:31

he is scottish if that's what you mean.

don't worry, i think he's mucking about about being on the pull. he has a GF.

No no no no no no NO!

What is the dress code of the wedding (ie the day bit)? Surely he has to follow that?

If he's Colin firth esque I don't think you can go wrong with a nice navy blue suit. Well cut. Google image him for inspiration. Classic is ALWAYS best. Don't wear jeans ffs he'll just look like a prat.

angeltulips · 16/11/2014 22:34

Oh x post. He's not on the prowl. All the more reason to go classic. Ffs this is the trade off men make for not having to change outfit every 5 mins - you don't get to express yourself in the same way women do. Suit up and shut up, IMO.

Kilt is honestly probably the best option.

Or, note the moleskin trews in Garlic's 20.23 post. They would work... moleskin is so cruel though. Apparently they only use the ends of the noses as it's the softest part, and it takes over 700 moles to make one pair.

GarlicNovember · 16/11/2014 22:58

Grin Grin Castle Grin

I was thinking more of that slightly velvety cotton Grin

You could probably get 700 mole noses out of my Mum's lawn, though!

Twinklestein · 16/11/2014 22:58

You just have to be Scottish to wear a kilt, perhaps you're thinking of specific clan/family tartans Garlic? There are district tartans as well as family tartans.

GarlicNovember · 16/11/2014 23:07

Aha, Twinkle! I had no idea there were district tartans. Thanks :)

Castle, while I was browsing men's fashion I found dozens of puppytooth trousers as well Shock Mole noses and puppy teeth ... fashion is a cruel, cruel business.

Shadow1986 · 16/11/2014 23:23

I like the jacket, but a crisp white shirt would look much nicer. With black jeans, brown belt and brown shoes I.e brogues.

This is the kind of outfit my husband and his friends wear who are same age as your brother.

squoosh · 17/11/2014 00:13

I see loads of hot fashion conscious men in tweed these days.

Smart jeans and a tweed jacket are fine for B list evening invitees. Anyone rocking up to the evening do in a kilt should have their head examined.

Schoolname · 17/11/2014 14:36

I think that it would look fine with slim dark jeans, a brown belt and brogues

burnishedsilver · 17/11/2014 14:50

It dawned on me while looking at mens clothes in a shop window, that I really don't like a man who looks preened. There's something attractive about getting it a little bit wrong fashion wise. I dont want a man who dresses better than I do. Tell him he's good to go whatever he picks. Some woman will love it Smile

MonstrousRatbag · 17/11/2014 14:51

What fabric is the waistcoat? He can't mix tweeds!

nevercackle · 17/11/2014 16:55

the waistcoat was bought with the jacket.

he's going to buy some new trousers.

thanks everyone.
