Do Mothers of the Bride really wear full length dresses?

Was reading another thread about searching for a wedding dress.
I clicked on a link to this site frocks and had a peek at what was on offer.

I have never, ever seen a mother of the bride wearing a full length gown. Bridesmaids do, yes - but the MOB?

Has anyone else come across this ? Is it more popular in other countries?

I too think it's unusual in the UK.

If that page (linked to) is aimed at MotBs, then why are all the models in their 20s?
Surely the models should be at least 20 yrs older?

It's just not my style SirChenjin, not even remotely and I find it depressing that it seems to be the only look in town for a mother of the bride/groom. And if you veer too far away from it, you risk getting told you're trying to steal the limelight on their day etc etc. Which is the first step to ending up as the subject of a MIL thread!

However my son's only 16 so hopefully if he ever gets married, things will have moved on by then Smile

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 17/11/2014 18:45

It's not the only look in town, it's just "typical". Just as the "typical" wedding dress is white and relatively formal but brides can and do wear all sorts of things.

Ujjayi · 17/11/2014 19:14

I don't think it is the norm but I do think it is possibly more common than one might think.

If & when my DC marry, I shall design something utterly fabulous & original. I don't mind the Carole Middleton look but it is rather dull.

I am aghast at all these MOB/MOG who are adorning themselves in floor length white Shock.

SirChenjin · 17/11/2014 19:57

It depends what you mean by veering away from

Floisme · 17/11/2014 20:13

I just mean that if you wear something not 'typical' you end up (and I think some comments on this thread illustrate this) rasing eyebrows at best. Then I got to wondering what I would do if my son ever got married... would I wear something I didn't much like so as not to draw attention to myself? Or go for something more my style and risk my future daughter in law (who may not even exist) complaining about me on aibu?

So I briefly got despondent and took it out on poor Mrs Middleton. Which was uncalled for. Anyway I'm fine again nowo. They're only clothes [grin[

I suppose it really depends on how far the MofB pushes it. I'm really showing my age here, but I remember Racquel Welch famously pushed it, and certainly got attention Grin

OMG what a brilliant photo! Just look at the bride's face Grin No, no I would never do that to a daughter-in-law - or my son. If the time comes, I will wear something in peach satin with a matching bolero. I will however draw the line at a fascinator.

wildone81 · 17/11/2014 22:13

My mums wearing this to our wedding next year... Not typical mother of the bride but she recoiled in horror at the thought of a pastel dress/jacket/hat combo! MIL to be will prob go for something more typically mother of the groom though ....suppose it all depends on the personality/style of the individual - I think they'll both look amazing despite being opposite ends of the mother of bride/groom style spectrum!

it seems like having a debate here, im late, just wanna share my mind. i read through all posts and checked online, knee-length MOB dress would be the normal one. Like the real scene showing up there, the bride's face just got twisted, none of brides would like to be stolen show from others, thats for sure.

Further more,i've also look around the interesting web and found they have normal MOB dresses ---- www.vividress.co.uk/guest-wedding-dresses/mother-of-the-bride-dresses.html?hemline=12
so i guess they agree with my opinions.

Nishky · 18/11/2014 09:07

My mum did - she too has various veins and because of a foot problem at the time had to wear quite clumpy shoes so she wore a maxi dress- she looked stunning. I have two MIL's - they both chose wide legged trousers, tunic tops and large hats ( was quite funny, the outfits were so similar but neither had any idea what the other was to wear)

All three of them looked stunning. I think Carole Middletons outfit was dull.

Nishky · 18/11/2014 09:08

Grin at 'various' veins!!!!

SirChenjin · 18/11/2014 10:31

There's a difference between a maxi dress and some of the very formal evening gown affairs on the Vivi website though I think - although I guess it depends on the type of wedding you're having

turner201415 · 20/11/2014 10:07

agree with Sirchenjin, the MOB style depends on the type of wedding you have, and sometimes mum got various veins(no offense),gotta choose long dress to cover.
