Do Mothers of the Bride really wear full length dresses?

Was reading another thread about searching for a wedding dress.
I clicked on a link to this site frocks and had a peek at what was on offer.

I have never, ever seen a mother of the bride wearing a full length gown. Bridesmaids do, yes - but the MOB?

Has anyone else come across this ? Is it more popular in other countries?

My mum wore one to my wedding - full length, ivory coloured. Wink
She looked great.

Booboostoo · 13/11/2014 20:45

My mum wore a full length, white, Armani custom made gown to my wedding and looked as ridiculous as you would imagine her to look. To his horror she asked DH to adjust her bustier right before the ceremony!

ggirl · 13/11/2014 20:57

Im sure it's the law that Mother of bride wears a tasteful suit

ggirl · 13/11/2014 20:58

My mum wore a pale blue suit with fucking hilarious hat

Catsmamma · 13/11/2014 21:04

i have no plans at all for a dress, but i am going to wear the biggest fuck off cartwheel hat anyone ever saw. it will make Carrie's Four Weddings and a Funeral hat look like an atom!

I like hats :o

SconeRhymesWithGone · 13/11/2014 21:15

Oh, I love that hat. And she "bought it specially."

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 13/11/2014 21:29

Scone, that's a sister of the bride dress rather than a mother of the bride dress... Grin

Although it must be said that the MOB dress wasn't exactly informal...

TheBookofRuth · 13/11/2014 21:31

I've been at a wedding at which the MOB wore a full length white dress and a hat with a veil!

NoelleHawthorne · 13/11/2014 22:51

My mum sewed herself a peacock blue silk fitted jacket and pencil skirt. Looked great

rockitroll · 14/11/2014 10:55

lol,i did not imagine so much fun here.well,in my mind, long dress for mom is no bad,cuz mom gives us most love,we should respect what they choose to wear, long or short,it doesnt matter, and in many coutries, its pretty normal,i assume scotland? but the frocks you guys argued was just innocent.hah

SirChenjin · 14/11/2014 11:00

No, I can assure you it's not normal here in Scotland, even if there's a ceilidh - we're not that different from the rest of the UK, honest!

burnishedsilver · 14/11/2014 11:08

I'm in Ireland. What I've gathered from various threads on here is that Uk weddings are much less dressy than Irish weddings. I have noticed that overseas relations travelling here for weddings tend to stand out as a bit underdressed. Once the mother of the bride doesn't wear white she can go as glam as she likes. Hats are losing ground.

rockitroll · 17/11/2014 11:14

eh? i got several friends from uk,which they bought dresses online, not sure if from vividress but they ordered long dresses for bridesmaids and moms.

SirChenjin · 17/11/2014 11:18

Still not normal for the Mother of the Bride/Groom to wear a long dress, definitely not. Are you American from the "Mom"? Were the weddings held outside the UK?

BuckskinnedAstronaut · 17/11/2014 13:43

Carole Middleton's outfit is what most people in the UK would think of as a typical "mother of the bride dress".

Do Mothers of the Bride really wear full length dresses?
SirChenjin · 17/11/2014 13:58

Yes, that's a typical MotB oufit here. Hat, knee or calf length dress, dress coat or jacket.

Floisme · 17/11/2014 14:02

Is that really the best we can hope for though? A shiny pastel dress and a jacket?

Badvocinapeartree · 17/11/2014 14:04

I knew a motb who wore a silver full length gown with a white feather fascinator for her daughters wedding!
It was most....odd.

Floisme · 17/11/2014 14:06

I know it's very shallow of me and that it's their day, not mine but it's almost enough to make me hope my son elopes.

Badvocinapeartree · 17/11/2014 14:06

Flow..I hear ya! :)

SquidgyMummy · 17/11/2014 17:17

I think it depends on the time of day. Most weddings are daylight affairs, so MOTB tends to wear knee length. If there is an opportunity, I have also seen guests change into evening dress for an evening reception.

One thing i would find a wierd look would be a long dress with a hat with a brim. perhaps a small cocktail hat or a fascinator at most....?

SignoraStronza · 17/11/2014 17:22

I've worn maxi dresses or skirts to every wedding I've been to and fully intend to if I'm ever m.o.t.b. Massive cankles and permanent foot swelling mean that leg exposure is a complete no no.

SirChenjin · 17/11/2014 17:26

Why the disparaging comments Flo? It's a lovely outfit.
