Faux fur coat - a very bad idea?

I love the fur coat with skinnies, sweatshirt, bobble hat and Converse look which I've seen around and discussed on here. I wear all of those apart from the coat anyway so it seems like a no brainer but just not sure I can pull it off.

I am 41, short and a size 12-14 hourglass. I've got messy cropped hair and suit quite a casual/edgy look (in my head). This look feels very me but am I kidding myself and will actually look like a bad case of mutton mum?

I've recently started a new job working with quite a few people younger than me and I am desperate not to be seen as the frumpy older one but equally don't want to appear too try hard.

The coat is this one hence my other post on the look for a discount code.

i can past everywhere apart from on here...

It's lovely, Belinda from AWO has it and it's gorgeous on her.

I have been wearing faux fur for years, I have one particular favourite and Every Single Time I wear it someone compliments me on it. BUT, faux fur is bulky, most are more flattering worn unbuttoned. You won't find a warmer coat either, my navy one leaves North Face etc in the shade for warmth.

As for it being 'mutton', well where to start? We older women have been wearing it for centuries (admittedly it was the real thing back then). If young people wish to borrow our stuff then they are most welcome but, if they think we're going to give it up just because it's caught the eye of some hipster in Shoreditch, well they can fuck right off.
Thank you.Smile

MilkThistle187 · 08/11/2014 13:17

That bloody 'mutton' expression should be banned

Agree whole heartedly about the mutton expression.

I've got two faux fur jackets. They are bloody lovely and I like them.

They also wash well in the washing machine

OneLittleLady · 08/11/2014 15:24

charitygirl new look if you can bear to shop with the teens! has a black faux fur collared jacket in atm which might work for you. It's not quite cropped but it's not thigh length either. I'm most definitely an hourglass and it works for me, I think whether it will work on you will depend on where your waist is rather than it's size, if that makes sense. Could be worth a try on though

I've got an ancient fauxr jacket from Planet of all places that was all over here about 5 yrs ago.

I wore it last night and looked like Sully; didn't care. So warm!

I now have a massive crush on Floisme SmileWink

Honeydragon · 08/11/2014 16:22

I'm not happy with this thread.

I'm now the proud owner of a faux leopard coat.

With a hood.

And EARS Grin Grin Grin Grin, it's awesome.

Ujjayi · 08/11/2014 16:41

Ha ha!! Ears??!! Sounds terrifically cosy!

Honeydragon · 08/11/2014 16:49

Yes. Ears and bright pink lining. Dd wants one now.

I'm going out next Saturday, so it will be teamed up with leather leggings, a black vest and black leather converse.

Floisme · 08/11/2014 16:51

Thank you, Ujjayi Grin

Ujjayi · 08/11/2014 16:58

I'm wearing mine tonight to a stand up gig with leather leggings too. DH has asked me to check how close to the front our seats are. Why? Because will you feel comfortable getting up on stage if required? Hell yeah!

NoelleHawthorne · 08/11/2014 17:02

This amount of threads on them makes me think they will be ubiquitous by December

quirkychick · 08/11/2014 17:09

I have a Richards one too! It is vintage Wink as was my grandmothers from the 80s. I am 43 and obviously take after her...

Will be wearing with skinnies and converse too.

Honeydragon · 08/11/2014 17:49

I dunno Noel, lots of them in the shops last winter, but didn't see that many out and about.

CointreauVersial · 08/11/2014 18:57

Ha! I have that very coat on order from Warehouse, arriving Monday, and since placing the order I can't believe how many threads and blogs I've seen which feature it. I have high hopes.

Honeydragon · 08/11/2014 19:10

This is mine, looks awful in the picture but lovely in real life. I doubt somehow it will be ubiquitous on most people over eleven Wink

Faux fur coat - a very bad idea?
hettie · 08/11/2014 20:50

There is a very similar greyish colour one on Dorothy Perkins and I think they have one of their 30 percent off ATM...

Greengrow · 08/11/2014 21:09

It looks good.
I just ordered this one 2 days ago although it's not full length so probably not too warm once the weather gets worse

Bad news, I tried it on this afternoon and it was so unflattering :( (Beautiful coat though). I love the idea but am just not convinced I can pull this off despite every fashion blogger/Pinterester rocking the look.

I have contented myself with some new high tops and a furry snood until I am brave enough to go for the coat.

Greengrow · 08/11/2014 21:50

Never mind. Let's hope mine when it comes is not the same.
