Mulberry bag- are they worth it?

Thinking about splashing out on one for my Christmas and birthday, are they as lovely as they look?! I know they are very expensive but are they worth it? It is it just a splurge too far?!

I agree they are really dull. There is a display of them in our local really dull suburban House of Fraser and they fit right in somehow.

HolgerDanske · 30/10/2014 17:57

Funnily enough that is what I like about mulberry. I want a rather dull go-to bag.

ZaraW · 30/10/2014 18:05

I have three the oldest is my favourite Rampling in Oak Congo leather, also have an Elgin which is a workhorse of a bag and has not been treated kindly but still manages to look great and a Bayswater I got 5 years ago which I haven't used a lot but the edges are really scuffed and some stitching is coming away and I don't use it a lot. I refused to buy after their prices went up and friends commented quality has gone done.

I won't pay more than £600 and Frye is my first place to look if I want something.

turdfairynomore · 30/10/2014 18:08

I like dull/go to as well!!! I was a handbag fiend. Bought one a month in next/river island etc at least!! Saved up and bought a black bayswater two yrs ago and haven't looked at a high st bag since!! It's heavy-but I knew that. I love it!! It looks smart'ie casual and since I lost weight it also fits on my shoulder!!! I'm not sure I'd ever buy "new" again. I've since bought a smudged leopard bay waster and a silver millennium evening bag from resellers and I think that's how I'd buy again.

Bowlersarm · 30/10/2014 18:10

I love mulberry bags. They're the only ones I've bought for years now.

bonhomme · 30/10/2014 18:10

No they are not - I have two and no longer use them and regret spending
£££ on them. I would never spend so much money on bags anymore - even though I'm much better off financially then when I bought then. Truth is, most bags eventually date or you get tired of them.

divingoffthebalcony · 30/10/2014 18:11

Not at today's prices, no. I couldn't justify it.

However, I bought a Bayswater 6.5 years ago (when it was £495 which seems like a STEAL now) and it still looks excellent.

Missushb · 30/10/2014 18:21

Thanks everyone, loads of good info. Yes id be buying it myself with money saved up from working overtime and christmas and birthday money. my husband doesn't have a secretary either so safe hereSmile i like the hobo ones and the satchel ones. I'm a bit worried about the quality though, I have saw a lot of comments about the quality not being what it was. I would like a good quality bag that will last, for everyday use.

I like some of the new models , but it's not Something I would get now TBH,
There are so much better bags out there,

turdfairynomore · 30/10/2014 18:29

Look on labels most wanted and naughtipidgins nest. Authentic bags, some almost new.

divingoffthebalcony · 30/10/2014 18:29

I was going to suggest Naughtipidgin actually.

Pollywallywinkles · 30/10/2014 18:29

I have a number of mulberry bags and gave not had an issue with quality with any of them.

I only buy in the sale or at one of the factory shops, so normally 30-50% off.

HolgerDanske · 30/10/2014 18:33

There are usually at least a few mulberry bags on vestiaire collective, as well.

porgie80 · 30/10/2014 18:39

Those of you who have Anthony's- they do a small and large version- right? The SA looked at me like I was a space alien when I asked if the one I wanted to buy last year was the large or small- I brought it anyway as it was perfectly sufficient in size but I keep hearing they do two sizes but the way this SA acted has made me think i'm going barmy.

Anyway- I have a Anthony. I love it although the metalware gets scratched very easily and annoys me.

Saving for another!

Magpiemystery · 30/10/2014 18:40

I've got 2 which are both about 3 years old. These were £600 - £800 when I bought them them and the prices have gone up considerably since then. I've not had any trouble with mine so can't comment on the service, but looking at the prices now I think I would go for a Chloe or Celine bag over mulberry

porgie80 · 30/10/2014 18:41

I use mine daily and its fine- but you have to look after it so invest in the protection spray and cream they try to flog you when you buy one to keep it looking it's best. I doubt i'll still be using it in 30 years time (my Mum has a Chanel bag that she got for her 18th birthday and she's 72) but with everyday use i'll be happy if I get 5 years out of it.

mrsrhodgilbert · 30/10/2014 19:07

Porgie, yes there are two sizes of Antony, the SA must have been very uninformed if she didn't know that. You're not a space alien.

I have quite a few mulberry bags myself. I have paid full price a couple of times but most have come from sales or outlet stores, Bicester and York.

I haven't had any quality issues but I do think the prices are now ridiculous.

santamarianovella · 30/10/2014 19:21

porgie omg! Is your mother willing to sell that Chanel? Is it jersey or leather?

porgie80 · 30/10/2014 19:21

Thank you mrshodgilbert!

Does anyone know if Bicester outlet is any better then Cheshire Oaks? I went to Cheshire Oaks for mine last year when visiting family- I want another and will wait until we are that of the woods for me to get one if it's no better as family live 5 mins from CO while it's over an hour on the train to Bicester.

NickyNoo2014 · 30/10/2014 20:26

I recommend having a good browse around for vintage or secondhand Mulberry bags rather than spending heaps of money on a new one. Some bags are sold as "used" but are still in brand new condition.

Captainweasel · 30/10/2014 20:34

I have a Lilly in oxblood which I love and dh bought for me. And I treated myself and a daria hobo with overtime money.

I love them. But will use them to death.

ThisBitchIsResting · 30/10/2014 21:03

Shock and Grin at santamarianovella trying to buy Porgie's mum's heirloom bag!

I think Mulberry bags are a bit boring for the price point - the leather and quality is very good, but the designs are boring and if you are interested in quality classic leather bags, spend £2-300 on an Italian leather bag. I would buy a Chloe instead for same price, equal quality and much better designs.

Comito · 30/10/2014 21:08

I was lucky buying my two second hand as a relative had an online business buying and selling second hand bags so she was able to direct me away from the suspect ones on ebay.

One is a Daria Hobo in oak and the other is a Mitzy in black. They were about £375 each IIRC. I use them all the time.

carrielou2007 · 31/10/2014 10:39

I love my Mulberry bags, I have way too many all bought from Shepton mallet factory shop bar one and my purses. I wanted a bay as my work bag and on one trip to SM instead of the seasonal coloured ones they had black and oak for £600ish each. I decided to buy both until I picked them up and almost fell over Shock soooo heavy even when empty! I bought an Alexa and antony instead Grin

Hulababy · 31/10/2014 10:48

I have a brown leather over the shoulder messenger style mulberry handbag which dh bought me 3 or 4 years ago. I'm not a bag person at all so have never craved any bag. But I use this pretty much daily and it's still going strong. The leather looks a bit more worn now but in a good way. It's certainly lasting far better than other bags I've had.
