Am i behind the times, or do you all know about taking gelatine each day?

Taking a teaspoon or two of gelatine each day is meant to clear skin, strengthen nails and hair. Good for digestion and aids sleep.

It can be mixed in with tea or coffee so it doesn't solidify.

and who said dessert wasn't good for you Wink

Don't think there's much sound scientific evidence base for this one .

MelanieCheeks · 28/10/2014 14:07

Waaaaay behind the times. When I were a lass, it was "eat a cube of jelly a day" for strong nails.

No, it doesn't work.

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 14:07

I've just started taking it. My skin and hair are yet to show any improvement but my nails are amazing. They are long, strong and smoother than they've ever been, and sheeny like they've been buffed. The effect showed within a couple of weeks.
I don't take gelatine on it's own but by making my own bone broth.

MsBug · 28/10/2014 14:07

Gelatine is an animal product, isn't it? I'm a veggie so I avoid food containing it and I have lovely skin so there

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 14:08

Of course it could be something else in the bone broth having this effect...

Wolfbasher · 28/10/2014 14:08

I've made jelly with the Star Wars mould for the DC tonight. Just the excuse I needed to nick Obi Wan Kenobi for myself :)

Graciescotland · 28/10/2014 14:11

I knew a couple of guitarists who used to eat jelly cubes (the ones you were meant to dilute) for strong nails years ago.

This is a really old trick! My mum used to eat jelly cubes when she was little to make her hair grow long and she is 76!

That link is full of "might help", "may help", "is rumoured to", and "I haven't tried this myself".

So, no, still not tried and tested evidence, sorry.

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 14:21

Dirt I know! But it's true. Before I started taking it my nails were thin and several of them had been peeling, breaking, flaking for months. I assumed the same as you, that I would need to wait until a completely new nail had grown. I am amazed.

TheBatteriesHaveRunOut · 28/10/2014 14:37

I have nails like I'm Wolverbloodyrine and hair like I'm Homer Simpson.

What will happen if I take gelatine daily?

But I now really want Star Wars jelly moulds.

pinkfrocks · 28/10/2014 14:51

The thing is- that link is not from anyone with any scientific background, it's effectively a blog.

specialsubject · 28/10/2014 14:57

no conclusive evidence. Feel free to show me some!

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 15:43

uuuurgh Corpse did you ever see The Last King of Scotland (shudders)?

muphys · 28/10/2014 15:46

Stepaway Grin

I should just mention that I don't use the gelatine, and was posting to see if many people did and if so, it did anything for you. I don't have any scientific evidence whatsoever, I just happened to stumble across it.

It's a myth that eating gelatine or jelly strengthens nails. Also, nails grow by new nail cells being formed in the matrix and 'pushing' the older cells forward. So the nail plate that is at the free edge of your nails is around 3 months old and nothing consumed now can affect those cells!

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 16:47

I've just come across a blog in which the writer uses tallow as a moisturiser. Tallow is rendered suet I think. She looks amazing.

Why am I tempted to try all these things? Confused

AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 28/10/2014 18:18

I am also very susceptible to things like this plasticbanana - I ordered kelp tablets on the strength of a thread last week and am now Googling gelatin Hmm - I do find this particularly appealing as am also a big fan of bone broths.

Re the tallow, I remember watching a documentary one time about a chap living in Siberia or somewhere - vvv harsh weather conditions, and he was an outdoorsy type. Anyway he looked about 40-45 tops. Then the narrator said he was 90 Shock - I had to rewind to check I'd heard correctly Shock. Turns out he slathered his face in animal fat every day to protect against the biting wind.

pinkfrocks · 28/10/2014 18:30

nails depend on collagen and protein. when they break it's because they are dry and this often happens as we get older.

plasticbanana · 28/10/2014 18:54

Right Anathema, you're the only one who's going to understand! I am sitting right now with tallow on my face. I got it from the top of my refrigerated bone broth. It does feel like sebum actually. BUT I smell like dinner. I hope my man isn't too starving when he comes home in a minute.

Oh please do report back! I might try this
