Talk me out of sparkly clothes...

I have a burning desire to buy a lovely winter party dress in velvet or sequins or something glittery. I'm mid twenties (average height) and hourglass shaped - anything that shines in the light is going to make me look really lumpy and bumpy, isn't it? Also, I don't want to look like I'm trying to draw attention to myself - is that even possible?

I hate trying on dresses that just make it look like there's a spotlight on my boobs and hips, so don't want to go shopping just to feel bad about myself.

No do it, I have been trawling the high street this am for exactly the same thing but I don't think the winter party frocks are out yet. It's nice to have a bit of glitter and sequins for the Xmas party season Smile

OldRoan · 27/10/2014 11:47

I've been eyeing up this one. I'm just a bit apprehensive. Will I look like a sparkly scrunched up bit of foil with lumps in the wrong places?

I think it's pretty OP, you can't tell how it will look without trying it on.

If you're concerned about all over sparkles, I've seen tops and dresses around that just have sparkly bits on the chest under the collar.

jeee · 27/10/2014 12:15

You are mid twenties. You are positively a baby. You should wear glitter. You will look stunning.

Nice dress, btw.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 27/10/2014 12:40

No I won't because glitter/sparkles are fabulous.

I've just bought a Whistles navy jumper dress with sparkly bits, I love it, especially at night. I also have a beautiful black sequin cape from Jaeger that makes me look like some sort of glam bat. I love that too.

I think dec 1st is the sequin klaxon Wink but just go for it and enjoy!

Ujjayi · 27/10/2014 12:51

Dress is gorgeous.

Sequin Klaxon goes off on 6th November in this house Wink

BillStickersIsInnocent · 27/10/2014 13:06

Ah after bonfire night right?
Must change my calendar!

burnishedsilver · 27/10/2014 13:07

Buy it Smile

SuperDuperJezebel · 27/10/2014 13:09

Ah, I saw a beautiful sparkly sequinned dress when I was in Stockholm a few weeks ago, everything else was fairly pricy but this was actually affordable, I decided not to bother cos I didn't fancy taking off all my layers to try it on. Full of regret now!

OldRoan · 27/10/2014 13:10

I deliberately avoided the C word because I knew people would get cross about this being in S&B And if anything, this is an ANTI-sequin klaxon Wink.

But thanks everyone. Maybe I'll try it... Normally I wear black with sparkly shoes so I'm trying to be brave.

Sorry but I'm going to go against the flow here. I love a bit of sparkle but that dress doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid. I think it's the all over glitter plus the body con - it's all just a bit too full on for my liking. But have a try - it's just my opinion and you may look gorgeous in it.

SofaCanary · 27/10/2014 13:46

Liz McDonald would love it Grin

OldRoan · 27/10/2014 17:15

Flo, the body con bit is putting me off. I might drag a friend along to try it.

Had to google Liz McDonald... Blush.

this too!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2014 17:46

Sorry but I think that Alice and You dress isn't v nice - it actually looks a bit frumpy, if it is possible for something sparkly and tight to seem frumpy. I think it might be to do with the colour.

You are young and (I think?) slim. I think there will be much nicer sparkles around tbh.

This one maybe Or maybe a sequin mini skirt with opaques and a plain top?

OldRoan · 27/10/2014 17:55

Maybe I should hold off for a bit. I'm insecure about my thighs and arms, so anything with sleeves and not ultra short is a bonus.

Having said that, not looking like a lizard is probably a good start! I can't decide if she looks like she's been swallowed by a mermaid or a snake.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2014 18:25

That is hideous! Grin

herecomesthsun · 27/10/2014 18:34

I think this would be good for an hourglass -ish shape, as it is cut away at the key area of the waist, it would be lovely over a velvet dress I think.

herecomesthsun · 27/10/2014 18:54

Alternatively, noy glittery, but dramatic

HolgerDanske · 27/10/2014 19:14

Sorry but I really don't like it Blush

I think if you're going to go for sequins/glitter you can do better than that. You're young, you've got to be cool with it!

HolgerDanske · 27/10/2014 19:18

I do like one linked to directly above me. You could always get glittery shoes and a velvet shrug to go with it Smile

herecomesthsun · 27/10/2014 19:35

When I was in my 20s I was very hourglass, the key thing was to highlight / be quite fitted at the waist otherwise I looked very dumpy. It is also important for the dress to be cut for the waist to hit at your natural waist, I didn't quite get that in my 20s, just spent lots and lots of time in changing rooms trying things on that didn't quite work.

I think that short dresses tend to go with a younger look, but going for a long dress in a suitable context can look very glamorous, as long as it comes in at the waist. Block colour in a longish dress is really very figure flattering and also glam, but it probably helps to have the height to carry it off. The fashion for maxi dresses would have been great for this, not sure how fashionable they are now for casual wear for 20-somethings. Mind you, I quite like just-above-the-ankle length for evening, again each to their own.

I really like cowl necks and square necks(here) and did when I was younger too, I found it quite flattering and less frumpy to have a bit of flesh showing, without too much embonpoint, but each to their own

herecomesthsun · 27/10/2014 19:37

love these, say for a Halloween party
