Has anyone ditched face powder?

I use Maybelline bb cream as a moisturiser/foundation, with powder on top. At the weekends when slobbing at home I skip the powder and am thinking my skin actually looks better. Does anyone else skip powder? I have pretty clear skin, but a few wrinkles and open pores, and an annoyingly shiny nose (which powder doesn't even cover for long).

I found foundation looks greasy and slips off without powder. I use a loose translucent one and don't feel it looks cakey to me.

stickymousemat · 19/10/2014 16:36

Never use it. I had a go with mineral make-up when it was all the rage and it made me look 103. The only thing it's good for is covering really nasty spots. I do have quite dry skin though.

PillForgettingIdiot · 19/10/2014 16:38

I use powder because my skin is awfully greasy. I use mousse foundations because my skin can't cope with liquid, it just slides off and I look wet.

Any ideas?

Sparkletastic · 19/10/2014 16:44

I use the Mac colourless blotting powder. I definitely need it on my oily t zone. Don't rate BB creams at all. A good serum and a smidge of Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser or Bourgeois Healthy Mix foundation are my staples, powder to fix.

SpanielofDoom · 19/10/2014 17:22

I stopped using it a few years ago, even though my skin is quite oily. I just thought it aged me and looked unpleasant after a couple of hours. I use blotting papers for the shine.
I do still use it if I'm in a hurry and have been a bit heavy handed with blusher, a little powder over the top tones it down rather than redoing my face.

VoyagerII · 19/10/2014 17:34

I look ok when I've just got up and washed my face, I'm happy to go out with no make-up at all (though I wear it some days).

A couple of hours later though, I look like an oil slick! If I haven't got time to wash my face again, some powder is very useful. You do have to keep it light to not look cakey but most modern ones don't IME. I'm using a borjois one at the moment that is very fine and light.

I'm not very wrinkly yet (thanks to incredibly oily skin...) but if I start to get powder actually collecting in wrinkles, that will put me off it.

AlleyCat11 · 19/10/2014 17:43

I gave up foundation & powder when I was 30. Switched to bronzer, just a puff. Then I ditched that. For a night out, if I'm doing make-up, I puff on a fine glitter powder. Maybe I would like a highlighter though. What's the Chanel one like?

noddyholder · 19/10/2014 17:43

I think maybe because I am a bit wrinkly I avoid it Grin

stickymousemat · 19/10/2014 17:48

The older I get the less make-up I wear. It's really aging I think. Better to look sightly shite than to look like a panto dame, which is what I'd look like these days if I wore foundation + concealer + blusher + powder + mascara + eyeshadow + lipstick.

I'm down to mascara and blusher (liquid tint thing) these days. Eye-liner if I'm pushing the boat out.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2014 18:06

I'm the other way, the older I get, the more I wear, but that is starting from wearing pretty well none through my 20s and 30s. I keep it very natural looking now, but find increasingly I look a bit haggard without a bit of tinted moisturiser, eyebrow colour, subtle eyeliner and a natural looking lipcolour. I rarely use eyeshadow or blusher. Also, my confidence in choosing and applying products has grown over the years.

Carpaccio · 19/10/2014 18:27

I use powder to set my makeup and to touch up during the day. I like it and think my makeup generally looks very nice.
I don't use loads, so it's barely visible, but it just helps my oily skin stay fairly matte instead of looking like an oil slick. Primers don't do the job well enough for me.

I apply it with a brush in the areas where I need it and it doesn't make me look older than I am.

noddyholder · 19/10/2014 18:46

I wear less too but my skin is the one bit of me that has improved with age! I wear a really light touch of bb cream but always mascara No eyeshadow or eyeliner ever

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 19/10/2014 18:49

My skin is oily and I have used powder on my t zone for years. I agree it can look cakey but recently I started using a Loreal BB nude pressed powder which I like. I always use a brush though which gives a lighter finish than the sponge pad it comes with. I have also started using Clinique CC cream which I rate highly.

Nightboattocairo · 19/10/2014 19:19

I do not suit BB creams or mineral make up - one thing I have definitely realised over the years is that yiu certainly get what you pay for with powders.

ThisBitchIsResting · 19/10/2014 19:26

I only wear a light foundation and cream blusher, sometimes highlighter too. I'm 32.

I always think powder on top undoes all the work that we go to to get glowing skin, and the great formulations of foundations. People worry overly about shine , I never see anyone whose nose looks shiny, but very often see the caked powdery look.

It's like taking the perfect cake mix and adding an extra dollop of flour right at the end.

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 19:44

'Better to look slightly shite than to look like a panto dame'
'it seems to stick to stray facial hairs'
'I always think powder on top undoes all the work that we go to to get glowing skin'

Amen to all this. All of these points have factored in to my wondering whether to ditch powder!

I only wear powder if I'm going out all day night to help "fix " my make up, but mostly I can't be bothered / don't have time and stick to just foundation

crabwoman · 19/10/2014 19:50

I'm 30 and usually wear a full face of makeup.
But I have never, ever worn powder. I just think it looks a bit Miss Haversham and don't understand why you'd need it when today's foundations cover a whole retinue of skin types and problems.
In my opinion it just 'sits' on the skin.

CointreauVersial · 19/10/2014 20:54

Heavens, no, I'm not ditching it anytime soon.

I don't wear foundation, so without powder my face looks so shiny and blotchy. I only wear a lightweight one, though, and blend/buff it in well. A slightly matte finish hides all the wrinkles and pores, and keeps my eye make up on for longer.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2014 21:03

You need to buff powder in well, not just dust it on. Shininess really highlights fine wrinkles IMO, a bit of mattification makes a big difference. Obviously if you aren't at the fine wrinkles stage then that isn't an issue.

I can't say I notice people looking powdery generally, what I do notice quite regularly is thick, heavy coverage foundation that looks like stage make-up, that can be very ageing.

I virtually never see anyone my age (mid 40s) with skin that glows, I must admit. Just one friend springs to mind and she worked on a beauty counter for years, she has amazing skin.

Ilovenicesoap · 19/10/2014 21:06

I use Mineral Veil.
All the young uns shun any type of powder and have really shiny ,greasy faces .
They accentuate every pore, spot and imperfection as a result.
Powder shouldn't be wiped on but a tiny bit pressed on to set your make up.

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 21:18

'You need to buff powder in well, not just dust it on' - okay, so now I think I've been doing it wrong all these years. What does buffing it in well involve, WhoKnows?

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2014 21:24

I use a big stubby brush, dab the ends of the bristles into a tiny bit of powder in the lid of the container (not into the powder itself), tap it off then dab it onto my skin with the ends of the bristles in a circular motion till it disappears.

southeastastra · 19/10/2014 21:29

noo i couldn't live without my loose powder! it just finishes a look and keeps make up in place. i just dab a bit on here and there.

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 21:50

Hmm, WhoKnows, that's basically what I do, except that I use pressed powder rather than loose ...
