Will this coat 'date' quickly?

I was looking at another thread, and clicked on a link to this coat:

[[www.hobbs.co.uk/product/display?productID=0214-3057-3893L00&productvarid=0214-3057-3893L00-GRAPEFRUIT -18&refpage=coats-jackets ]]

I left it open on my screen, and my DH saw it, and has bought it for me. It is a lovely coat, and I do need a coat, but I'm not sure if it wil looke dated after this year. He has never done anything like this before, and I appreciate the thought so much. Unfortunately, it is also very expensive ( for us), so I need to know it will be worn for years.
Please be honest.

If my husband had bought it for me I would send it back; you will be SICK of that colour and style in about six months. OK if it was a £25 one from Primark but not for an expensive one like that

lordStrange · 17/10/2014 11:20

I think it's beautiful Smile. I have no idea about how many years you'll get from it trend wise, I would wear it forever.

pictish · 17/10/2014 11:21

The colour is a bit hard to marry to much.

CallOfTheRiled · 17/10/2014 11:24

Thank you.
I do love it , but its very different from what I usually wear (black). I'm not really into trends at all!
I'm a bit down ATM, and I know he was trying to cheer me up too! If only it was cheaper!

I wear a lot of black- I know I'm dull! ( I actually can't believe I'm on a ' style and beauty' thread!

I'm wondering if you should leave the browser open at a diamond necklace next time! Wink

CallOfTheRiled · 17/10/2014 11:28

Worth a go!

well it might be nice to pop on a bonkers coloured coat over your black things

Bluestocking · 17/10/2014 11:33

I think it's gorgeous, will look great over your black outfits, and has a lovely texture (I have had a fondle of this coat in my local Hobbs). And unless you move in fashionista circles, it won't matter if it "dates". I would be beyond thrilled if my DP bought it for me!

AnnoyingOrange · 17/10/2014 11:34

It's such a strong colour I think I would get tired of it after a season or two

Sylviet · 17/10/2014 11:38

It's so nice of your husband. If it were me I'd not care a jot about notions of 'date', and just love the Orange coat my DH got me, and wear it with love and pride.

The whole idea of clothes dating, is just a marketing ploy.

TheVeryThing · 17/10/2014 11:44

It's a lovely coat and so sweet of your DH.

I actually think that colour will go with a lot of things, certainly it will look great with black, also navy or grey (thinking of trousers).
Might not be great over anything patterned, but you really only need to think about what will actually be visible when you're wearing the coat.

I don't think the style will date, but you may get tired of the colour.
Do you have any other coats, jackets etc or would you wear it every day?

Twinklestein · 17/10/2014 13:23

Honestly, I think it's a pretty colour but the shape is very now. If you need a coat that will last for years I would go for a shape that won't date and a colour that would go with more, and also wont get dirty.

On the other hand it's a good price for a 95% wool coat & if you love it and it will make you happy every winter, then go for it.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 17/10/2014 13:25

Colour is vile. Shape is very "now" and I don't think very flattering.

I would go for a longer darker coate if you want one that lasts. I have a 25 year old coat in my wardrobe bought by my DS. Still wear it.

lockie1983 · 17/10/2014 13:39

Cocoon shape coats have been around since the early 1900s and as such is a "classic" shape, if you believe in such a thing. If you like the shape on you, keep it.

I think the colour is beautiful and would make me feel bright and happy on cold dark days; perfect over a dark wardrobe.

If you want to cheer me up, you can always send it in this direction !

SofaCanary · 17/10/2014 13:54

Your husband is lovelier than the coat.

maybemyrtle · 17/10/2014 14:22

How do you feel when you put it on? It's so uplifting to see/wear colour in winter when everyone else is in black and grey. People will smile at you and wish they looked brighter :) ...but if you won't wear it or feel guilty about the ££ then return it.

CallOfTheRiled · 17/10/2014 14:27

Thank you for all your replies.
SofaCanary - your are very tactful, and made me smile. And yes, my husband is lovely, which makes this so hard.
I think I will see how much HE loves it when he gets back (he's been away, but is back tonight)

If the colour loooks good on you- and I don't think there'd be any middle ground there- you should keep it. It's a beautiful coat, and 175 is really good for 95% wool. If you wore it every day in winter for two years it would be less than 1 per wear- bargain. Seriously though, a good quality wool coat looks good for years so is a much better investment than three or four cheap ones.

FromagePlease · 17/10/2014 15:55

My DH bought me a very distinctively coloured and expensive Hobbs coat one Christmas. At first I wasn't sure at all.

But actually, I wear it now and love it. I don't wear it every day, and make sure I wear neutral colours with it.

I love that he bought it for me, and I'm reminded of this when I look at it. And, tbh, I've had more compliments of this coat than all my grey, black and navy ones combined.

LeoandBoosmum · 17/10/2014 16:12

I recommended this coat to some one here the other week! I think it's stunning (but completely incompatible with my hair colour!) One thing I will say is that I tend to size down in this kind of style as that way the coat still feels comfortable and will still look fresh when the oversized trend passes. The quality of the coat is second to none and it will be warm! If I were you I'd be awarding major brownie points to your DH - what a lovely, lovely thing to do for you!
I would embrace the colour and just not overwear the coat :) It will look great with neutral shades (black, which you said you were a lot of, creams, charcoals, maybe even navy). Buy yourself a cheapie one when you can and wear your gorgeous coat sparingly - you'll feel a million dollars!
A great cheap coat at the moment is available at Sainsburys (a lightish olive parka with a fur hood and pull-ins at the waist for a bit of definition). It's £40.
