Hmm

lurkingaround · 13/10/2014 09:52

Can't see it here at work. What is it?

MilkThistle187 · 13/10/2014 10:08

It's a a kind of edited shopping site

Betty, it's her job why shouldn't she get paid?

I really like the idea in theory, but I wonder how it is going to make money? If it's all from affiliate links, fine, but if there are going to be paid ads on the site, then how is it different from a glossy magazine where the brands included in the "edit" have bought their way in by buying ad space? I would be sceptical about the "tried and tested" products for that reason...

and if it is affiliate links, will this be obvious or shady and undisclosed?

Merriboo · 13/10/2014 10:26

lurking it's here

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 13/10/2014 10:29

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Just looked at the site and it looks great. I do wonder how often it'll be updated, but it's a really good idea so well done Laura (not meant to sound patronising!)

No idea if she reads here (after the R&B kids shoes thing on the vogue thread!) but I would like to see her tie it in with Bloglovin somehow, so that I get a blog post/update in my feed to let me know that Wardrobe Icons has been updated. Otherwise I would forget to check back. I'd rather that than an email.

dexter73 · 13/10/2014 10:38

I just had a look and I have to say I don't get it. There are 5 fairly dull cardigans, jumpers etc. in black, navy or grey mostly. I would rather just surf the net than look at a very limited choice on there. I guess it just isn't aimed at me though. Good luck to her anyway.

AmberNectarine · 13/10/2014 11:24

Belinda and DMBL40 do much the same at a more inclusive level IMO. It's not that hard to find a nice jumper for £300, finding one for £30 is more of a challenge...

lurkingaround · 13/10/2014 11:34

Thanks, had a quick look. Hmmm so far, but I'm not a fan of her's anyway. And you're right Amber, not so difficult when you've loads of wonga to spend...

Marylou2 · 13/10/2014 11:51

Just has a look.Only issue I can forsee is that it reminds me that I actually have all these basics in my wardrobe anyway. Trench, breton, jeans,LBD etc. Doesn't entice me to buy.

Merriboo · 13/10/2014 12:02

I admire Laura for doing this- it can't be easy leaving a secure job. I like the look of the site and the magazine idea and I do so want to love it. However, I do agree that much is aspirational due to the cost of the items listed being beyond my disposable income- so I would have to go and find something similar that I could afford (kinda defeating the point of the site Hmm )
I agree with Amber about our own lovely Belinda, DMBL40 and others provide great options at an affordable pric.

It would be much better if they did a low/high cost version, and I totally agree finding the pefect grey cashmere crew neck sweater when you have £200 is easy. C'mon, give us a decent high street edit!

chanie44 · 13/10/2014 16:14

Sorry, it doesn't really do it for me. I really wanted her 'project' to be fabulous, but I don't really know what this site is, other than a load of clothes and a couple of captions from Laura.

thesaurusgirl · 13/10/2014 17:05

I'm not her biggest fan but I do like her look, and the new website doesn't disappoint at all (I thought she was doing a Youtube channel and was totally wrong).

Really slick and professional website, she must be investing a lot of time and money into this. Agree she must be making her money through affiliate links but wonder whether that will generate the kind of income she needs. No wonder she couldn't pay her interns Hmm.

I like the individual clothes featured very much, but like the poster above, they're the pieces everyone owns already, and that uber-normcore style is getting boring.

Still, she's done that whilst we've been talking bollocks on the internet, so she deserves success.

Karbea · 13/10/2014 18:13

Just had a look. I think the site itself is attractive, but I don't think it really adds much value over something like shopstyle - whereas there you've a bigger selection, all price points.

ZaraW · 13/10/2014 19:26

Am I missing something? Anyone who has an interest in fashion could pick those pieces they are "nice" but hardly fashion forward. And she seems to have picked a lot of J Crew who she works for? Mediocre at best. And those leather culottes make another appearance..........

oliviafrombolivia · 13/10/2014 19:56

just clicked on a link for a mango dress, and it didn't take me to the dress, only to the front page of the site..

Shopgirl1 · 13/10/2014 20:09

I like the site. I agree that it would be good if there were more things at various price points. I think shop style is overwhelming and this is more condensed and easy to see items. When upgrading classics I would look here...I used to love Laura's picks in Red magazine and this is kind of similar.

WipsGlitter · 13/10/2014 20:15

Expensive and bland.

Littlemoocow · 13/10/2014 20:23

I love her style and I was excited to see what this was. I hope it works out for her but I'm underwhelmed. There's hardly any items on the site, and if it's items that are forever classic, I don't see how they can be updated, so are the same items going to be on the page for a long time? And agreed, they're all too expensive.
On a slightly different note, I never understand how something is forever in style anyway. She has leather cullottes on there and leather skirts and trousers, these are very fashionable now but I don't remember anyone wearing them 5 years ago, in my mind most things on there aren't classic forever. She has some plain grey gym style sweaters on there, they're fashionable now, they weren't fashionable or classic 5 years ago. Am I missing something?

Littlemoocow · 13/10/2014 20:25

Even something like jeans, black trousers, trench coat, black heels, which are considered style classics, vary every year in their fit, style and little details. Heels for example are stiletto one season, chunky heel the next, round toe one season, pointy the next. How does this make a classic pair of black heels?

toptrumps1 · 13/10/2014 20:48

littlemoocow there was a good discussion in the fashion part of the GOMI forum (which is generally a bit bitchy but this thread wasn't). They were discussing minimalist fashion bloggers; both those you just dressed simply and those who worked on owning a small, capsule wardrobes of "classics". Exactly as you said, can anything really be a classic item, there are always subtle changes of cut, fabric, length and fit to keep us buying more. A trench coat from 15yrs ago will not be the same as one bought today. It's a shame, as I really love the concept of a classic capsule wardrobe myself but it is almost impossible to achieve.
