I probably could use a rake of some sort but for now I run my fingers through it all for a few minutes (not just a once over) so I am possibly having the same effect.

mathanxiety · 18/10/2014 23:16

I keep a small school-type fiskars scissors in my car to cut out small knots when I'm sitting at red lights...

choc0clock · 18/10/2014 23:24

Haha *mathan. That wi be me too if it gets knotty.

does the hair / curls turn out to be nicrr that way?

Fallulah · 18/10/2014 23:25

I forgot....I do also have to use Head and Shoulders every couple of washes because otherwise I get dry and flakey. Am I committing a terrible sin?

mathanxiety · 18/10/2014 23:31

I reckon if hair has a really tight know that can't be teased out then it's probably damaged at the end so much that it isn't going to recover, so cutting it out possibly salvages what remains. I really only cut a knot that is right at the end of the hair so I think no more than half a cm at a time. I don't want to do any drastic reshaping with a fiskars school scissors in the space of a lights change and with only the rear view mirror to help.

Mabelface · 19/10/2014 13:37

My tight knots aren't ones at the end, they're at the nape of my neck. I think I move around a lot in bed.

I love a CG thread! Have been doing it for 3 months and will never go back to shampoo. I like primark 'eclipz' argan oil deep intensive conditioner a couple of times a week. I have a few conditioners on the go to use as shampoos.

ZaraW · 19/10/2014 14:07

I can't imagine Head and Shoulders being part of the Curly Girl regime ;)

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 14:16

Oh, and recently I cut my own hair after watching this great tutorial - it looks better than any cut I've ever had by a professional m.youtube.com/watch?v=Iwf0NejSuPY

Morrigu · 19/10/2014 14:27

Does this method work at all for just wavy, very big hair? I rarely straighten mine anymore, just gets bunged into a bun most of the time and I'm bored with it. I've always wanted curls, dd has the most beautiful ringlets.

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 14:34

morrigu it would work for anyone I think. Most find their hair gets curlier once they start doing CG so you might be pleasantly surprised!

Fallulah · 19/10/2014 14:55

Well exactly, ZaraW, but flakey isn't a great look!

Morrigu · 19/10/2014 15:08

Excellent, I'll give it a whirl after I get a chop this week.

FavadiCacao · 19/10/2014 16:27

A CG method thread! Grin

I've tried the CG method a few years back and I didn't get on with the no shampoo or a lighter rinsing conditioner as a shampoo. My hair looked greasier and the curls straighter (I'm between 2b to 2c). I've kept the no combing, other than with fingers, and no-poo conditioners using the tightlycurly ingredients list. but I returned to using poo shampoos; I use argan oil and gel to style. My hair is curlier and the curls are more defined than before CG but whenever I do a deep mask -used cocoa butter last night- my curls are really bouncy and much tighter.

I really, really, would like to try CG in full again. Currently my hair is not dry and the scalp is 'normal' (ie not dry or oily). The water here is really hard (ph closer to 8). Any suggestions? Would using bicarb and apple cider vinegar for a period help with grease build up?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2014 16:42

I get the knotted nape of the neck bits as well, I tend to tease them out with my fingers while sitting at traffic lights on the way to work, they really do get very matted. Other than that, I do brush it through in the shower with a tangle teaser once I've got conditioner on but only use a comb to manoeuvre it for putting up, so just over the scalp and not the ends. My problem is DD has dead straight hair and needs to brush/comb hers, but she sees me just run my hands through mine and wants to follow suit.

I have been doing modified CG for about 5 years (no silicones, low poo shampoos). I'm always trying different brands, but tend to go back to Dr Organic. However I have yet to find any styling products which don't leave it either lanky, crunchy or both, I have tried loads. Even without them my hair looks far better than it did pre-CG, but does get a bit flyaway at times.

theonlygothinthevillage · 19/10/2014 16:50

To those asking about greasiness, well, different people have different experiences, but I have no grease problems using the no poo method. Even when I cover it in coconut oil overnight once a week I can easily wash it out using just conditioner.

Mabelface · 19/10/2014 16:57

My hair is too thick for a tangle teaser. Just doesn't work.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/10/2014 17:14

I can only use the tangle teaser under the shower, not on wet hair by itself and certainly not on dry. I find greasiness varies a bit eith shampoos, just got to the end of a bottle of BS Rainforest and scalp was in a pretty bad state (normally I have no scalp probs at all).

FavadiCacao · 19/10/2014 17:30

Thank you.
I have not tried Dr Organics, I'm looking forward to give it a go. I found adding a couple of drops of argan oil after the gel stop the crunchiness but doesn't weigh the hair down, stops the matting and a few water sprays in the morning and hair bounces back.

I love coconut oil for everything: cooking, moisturiser, soothing red skin/spots, lip balm, hair mask...I have also used it as styling product but it heavier on my hair than argan oil.

Didactylos · 19/10/2014 19:23

I thought I had wavy hair but I seem to be somewhere between a 2c -3a or botticelli curls in the curly girl book
I hadnt worried about the mats of hair when finger combing thing as Im post pregnancy and so was getting huge hair loss anyway, but its good to be warned

theonlygothinthevillage what a great video! I've cut my own hair before but not cut it dry and never attempted any layering. I've just cut my hair after watching it, then washed it and now waiting for it to dry to see how it looks!

Her hair is beautiful and so shiny Envy

theonlygothinthevillage · 20/10/2014 11:37

Shiny Cool, let us know how it turns out! I was really pleasantly surprised and am trying not to dwell on all the money I've spent in the past for so-so haircuts Hmm And yes the woman in the vid has fantastic hair.

CardiCorgi · 20/10/2014 12:52

What do you do to your hair while sleeping? I've always plaited mine but that seems to be a no-go.
I'm thinking of giving CG a go as I'm fed up with the frizz and my hair looks a bit dusty most of the time rather than bouncy and shiny.

theonlygothinthevillage · 20/10/2014 15:19

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps, Cardi. I got one via Amazon that is silk on one side and cotton on the other, about £12.
