My hair is curly and a bloody mess half the time. I'm struggling to tame my mane. I've tried frizz ease, what next? It'd pretty dry too so how do you get it soft and make your curls pop? Getting wed next week and want my hair to look less like a homeless shelter for stray birds Grin

I will carry on with the frizz ease for now too until I can get to a shop for Other Products Smile

Just google "curly girl method" and read. And read and read and read some more Grin

British curlies website and the talk forums on naturallycurly.com are excellent resources. Though perhaps overwhelming.

If you live near Birmingham (or even if you don't!) Matthew James at Puro Hair is a must. He'll not just cut your hair, but also shows you how to apply product and dry it, in a way you can replicate at home.

I find my curly hair is much nicer when it is a bit dirty, do I don't wash it often- once a week or less. I put conditioner in every time I have a shower though. I don't fully rinse it out and then put in Boots' curl creme while it is still wet. I have tried all sorts of products over the years, and Curl Creme is by far the best.

Primaryteach87 · 08/10/2014 22:51

Never, never brush unless before a hair wash. Wash hair at night, towel dry to damp, hair spray with any old cheapy hairspray, sleep. Wake up to awesome hair!

Comito · 08/10/2014 22:54

If I wash my hair at night and go to sleep with it damp I will wake up with a halo of birds' nest!

mentaldental22 · 08/10/2014 22:59

I'm a frizz ease fan, I have shoulder length curls & use about 5 pumps of serum, followed by a tennis ball sized amount of mousse. If I'm going out and really want the curls to pop I add 16 squirts of Go Curlier all before drying with a diffuser. Sounds a lot of hassle but my curls really respond well to it.

Primaryteach87 · 08/10/2014 23:14

Comitio- oh no! Obviously not all curly hair 'works' the same way :-( I have a mum who has very straight hair and spent all my childhood & most of my teens in a frizzy mess, so this method has been a Godsend!

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 08/10/2014 23:22

Ditch your shampoo. Wash hair with a non-silicone, non-parabens and low alcohol conditioner.

NEVER comb or brush; finger comb it when covered in conditioner.

As others have said, research Lorraine Massey/Curly Girl method.

Your hair will thank you!

If you're on FB there is a fab group called 'Curly Girls!' - you'll find a wealth of support and information there.

choc0clock · 09/10/2014 06:45

Agree with PP: curly girl method all thr way and ditch that frizz ease and anything else with silicon.

JanePlanet · 09/10/2014 06:48

Another vote for Aveda be curly.

HRH008isback · 09/10/2014 09:06

Is this what you are after?

If so, a golfball of Paul Mithchell the conditioner on wet/damp hair. Comb through with fingers, leave to ai dry, then fluff out with fingers so that it's soft and bouncy.

HRH008isback · 09/10/2014 09:09

Mitchell... Air dry

PinkSparklyElephant · 09/10/2014 20:16

I really envy people who can wait a while between washes and still have lovely hair! If I don't wash mine every other day is looks like it's been dunked in a chip pan!

JamaicanMeCrazy · 09/10/2014 20:31

This is after doing the coconut oil in scarf thing overnight and a 9 hr shift today. Looks better than yesterday, but not exactly good Hmm

I only wash my hair twice a week or so with v mild shampoo. Meh.

Another vote for frizz-ease, I have been using it for years, but also this stuff

www.aussiehair.com/uk/products/frizz-serum.php

Avon do a stuff that's brilliant in wet weather. And frankly, almond oil is great and very cheap. Any frizzy bits and I head straight for that and it stops my fringe from drying out, because I use tongs on it.

I put the serum on, brush the top of my head only and put it in a scrunchie at the base of my neck. When it's dry, it gives my head a bit of shape and people always ask how I get my curls to stay in. I just tell them that it's the other way round, the hair on top of my head has been straightened. I only wash my hair once a week because it's so much hassle, having just got all the curls smooth and silky, to go washing it out again. My hair looks just like yours Jamaican if I don't use the serum, but like the photo above when I do, but I do straighten the top usually. And it's very layered.

JamaicanMeCrazy · 09/10/2014 20:47

That's my hair with using serum

I need to get on amazon and buy me some better products Hmm

Best product I've found in years is Boots Curl Creme. At £1.80ish for a big pot, it's worth a try.

I love it.

PinkSparklyElephant · 09/10/2014 21:11

I love the Aussie serum. I mix it in with mousse if I'm just wetting down my hair and it looks almost decent!

HRH008isback · 09/10/2014 21:35

Ah thankyou! Try the Paul Mitchell.. You hair looks finer than mine, so maybe half a golfball!

MyFirstName · 09/10/2014 21:41

Another vote for the whole Curly Girl (Lorraine Massey) method. I kept nearly getting it right, but not quite. Then I bought her book. And got my curls back. I thought they had gone post-DC. No. Had just been drying my hair out due to power-shower over rinsing. I now leave a bit on conditioner in by softening the jet of water (if that makes sense)...so rather jet-washed dried out hair I have soft curls back.

nancy75 · 09/10/2014 21:54

I second Paul Mitchell, i'm afraid curly girl has never worked for me - my hair just doesn't feel clean.

I have noticed that my hair always looks much better on holiday and I think lots of curly hair problems are down to the water here, I am thinking about having a water softener of some kind installed

temporaryusername · 09/10/2014 22:25

SweetKitty I think your dd's hair sounds lovely and quite like mine Smile.

Comito · 09/10/2014 23:00

I used Frizz-ease for ages and saw no noticeable effect.

Primary I've been trying to tame my hair since I was about 14 with varying results. GHD has been the only thing that has actually worked but that means 20 mins in front of the mirror styling with the products I mentioned before.

I only ever wear my hair au naturel at the weekend or on holiday so in that case it gets the leave-in conditioner, not dried/styled and hope for the best.

It's funny because Dsis has beautiful heavy straight hair and envies mine because I can style it into curls and hers just won't do it. You always want what you can't have I guess.
