Playsuits, cute or ridiculous?

Hello,

I need an outside view! I have a couple of Xmas events coming up and I was vaguely thinking of getting a smartish playsuit to wear instead of a dress, something like this:

Thing is I am 37 and wonder if I will just look like a dick?

Bit of background, I am tall and skinny with no boobs so dresses not great on me but my legs are my best part.

Having worn one of these (made by my mum in the 60s! With psychedelic lions on it!) in my early 20s when clubbing a lot, my main reaction is "going to the toilet in one of those is really annoying".

I think it looks really cute if you've got the legs for it, and I don't think you'd look like a dick - but not "smart", IYKWIM. I wouldn't wear it to an event where everyone else is wearing cocktail dresses or is any way formal.

Sunna · 07/10/2014 14:13

Ridiculous on anyone over the age of 18 - some fashions really are just for the young imo.

toptrumps1 · 07/10/2014 14:18

Similar to leedy

If the events are quite informal and laid back, a bit clubby and fun, then yes, with black opaques and killer heels.

If you work in financial services and are going to the company "do" in the local beige hotel, then no. Unless you're already known as the quirky one.

Your figure sounds perfect for that kind of thing though. The toilet thing made me laugh, but is probably a serious practical consideration, make sure you can do it back up again properly when drunk!

SureFootedWhispher · 07/10/2014 14:23

I really like it. I have started wearing shorts with tights at 36 and am wondering whether I look like a dick too.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/10/2014 14:30

I wear shorts with tights at 36 too, I quite fancy a playsuit but not seen one I like enough yet, it's just for daytime wear.

SofaCanary · 07/10/2014 14:34

Ridiculous on anyone over 12 months, sorry.

ireallydontlikemonday · 07/10/2014 14:38

I would if I had the figure for it, but not for evening dress as pp said.

Primaryteach87 · 07/10/2014 15:00

Love it. Not to be locationist but more 'edgy' fashion is the norm in cities but would look OTT in a town ...,..BlushI say from experience having had to 'tone down' my colourful London wardrobe!

Stupidhead · 07/10/2014 15:03

If you're tall then they rarely fit and a sudden bend over will give you a vagina wedgie.

Tournesol · 07/10/2014 17:15

Well one event is a black tie party with people I don't know well but as a bit of a tomboy I don't feel that great in wafty dresses so thought I'd go down a more funky dressed up look.

Second event is village Xmas party so probably ok as I know most of the other mums.

Hadn't thought of the toilet issue, I have had issues before when drunk and I peed on the belt of a dress. Minging!

Not sure if I'll go for it, might just dig something out the back of the cupboard instead.

Black tie - no
Other one - if you can get one long enough in the body for you and don't mind toilet issues, yes.

toptrumps1 · 07/10/2014 17:32

hmm, the black tie one def not. You don't have to wear something wafty, I'm not a tomboy but equally don't like that kind of dress code and feel a wally in really girly dresses. I have a plain black shift dress that ends just above the knee which I wear with a big necklace, high denier opaques, and high heels. I wore stilettos last year but also have a pair of high heels a bit like this, kind of 1940's ish (bit more glam than this, but its the heel I mean):

I do admire wanting to try something new though, I immediately pictured that Caroline Flack women in the outfit she wore for the strictly launch (yes, its too blingy and I know nothing about her, but googling for that image she seems to wear a lot of them!):

I could see Zoe Ball in one too actually.

OneLittleLady · 07/10/2014 17:36

I've just bought one and love it. Wouldn't wear it to a black tie event but it's pretty and works for my general look. As long as you find the right one thats the best shape for your body and is long enough in the right places, I don't see why it can't look good

Only1scoop · 07/10/2014 17:37

If you are tall and skinny go for it....

ThisBitchIsResting · 07/10/2014 20:04

I think the one you linked is gorgeous. I have one I wore a couple of times this summer for nights out in London (bar / restaurant type affair) with long tux blazer and heels and felt great.

threepiecesuite · 08/10/2014 11:08

I am 34 and I have several, I love the one you've linked to, I have a similar one.
I am skinny with long legs but quite a big bottom so they suit me much more than dresses. Comfy too.

hellsbellsmelons · 08/10/2014 11:46

Well I like it too.
I have one and wore it 2 weeks ago and I'm the wrong side of 45!
If you have good legs then go for it.
But for black tie do a full length version (jumpsuit) would be better.
Something like this if you are tall and slim.
a bit more standout!

ShoesAndPsychology · 08/10/2014 11:52

I think the playsuit you've linked looks cute & if you were wearing it out with your close friends or a hen do I'd say go for it but for 'Christmas Events' I think it may be a bit too casual x

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/10/2014 12:00

The one OP linked is gorgeous but I would say it's far too casual for a black tie event.

Maybe I'm just jealous as I'm dumpy short & too curvy to ever get away with anything like this.

I think the name 'play suit' just annoys me too!

OneLittleLady · 08/10/2014 12:05

mygast I'm short and very curvy but the one i've got looks really good. I thought for ages I couldn't wear them but now I've found that's the right shape and length, I can and it looks really good

burnishedsilver · 08/10/2014 12:05

In the summer, on holiday, yes.
In the UK at Christmas, no.

grumblepuss · 08/10/2014 12:38

Yes! Do it.
I'm 30 and I love mine.

Nells77 · 08/10/2014 16:15

I'm 37 and have a few from motel. I love them and find them so much more flattering than a dress. In winter I'll wear mine with opagues and shie boots.
I'm only 5ft so the don't come up to short on me. I'm hoping I don't look a dick in them but I always get loads of complements when I wear themGrin
Also the loo thing after practise it becomes easy!!!

Spidergirl8 · 08/10/2014 19:25

Just looks like a cheap dress IMO, not edgy or daring, so would be fine to wear if that's a concern. I'd suggest going for one not made mainly from polyester though. Also, going to the loo will be a pain.

With your figure a body on dress would be much better.

pinkflaming0 · 08/10/2014 21:56

I'm 5'10" and slim, I have this one from Next that I plan to wear to Christmas work do with black opaques and patent kitten heels (I think killer heels would be a bit much and I want to be able to dance) - I'm 48.

It fits perfectly in the body btw

I like the sleeves on the Oasis one.
