Playsuits, cute or ridiculous?

Hello,

I need an outside view! I have a couple of Xmas events coming up and I was vaguely thinking of getting a smartish playsuit to wear instead of a dress, something like this:

Thing is I am 37 and wonder if I will just look like a dick?

Bit of background, I am tall and skinny with no boobs so dresses not great on me but my legs are my best part.

I love a playsuit! Mid forties - but not exactly known for my grown-up style!

Only you can decide if it will match the kind of event you are going to, but I'd be tempted to say "go for it". The one you've linked to looks lovely.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 09/10/2014 06:50

On the right body shape I think play suits can work, but for most events they're going to be considered a bit odd by a lot of the attendees (depends on the crowd of course, any fashion leanings in your circle and you'd probably be ok).

You should be able to find a dress that suits you though? What about a shift dress shape in silk so it's not bulky eg?

I really like the blue one linked by a PP but it's petite and you're tall Confused

rootypig · 09/10/2014 06:58

I don't think you'll look like a dick, but I do think they feel dated now.

KoalaDownUnder · 09/10/2014 07:06

I also think they're verging on being dated. And I only really like play suits with trouser-length legs in them (or are they called something different?)

I dunno. They're a bit like onesies IMO: a bit naff/cutesy so therefore can only be pulled off by gorgeous teens who would literally look good in a paper bag.

The next winter catalogue arrived on the post this morning. Their playsuit is lovely but even the model is struggling to pull it off. She's most likely skeletal irl but looks like she has a bit of a tummy in the play suit. My rule of thumb is that if the model doesn't look amazing in it what chance have I got?

50ShadesOfSummer · 09/10/2014 11:06

I think they work well if you have slim legs and hips - at least that's what I tell myself! Maybe it just didn't suit the model?

Don't tell me they're dated: getting into mine!

Nells77 · 09/10/2014 11:32

If order it and see how you feel in it. If you think it looks fantastic then go for it!
I don't care if they are dated, I feel good in them and know they suit me. Grin

Absolutely love that lace one - I think I might have to go and investigate it irl.

Superherosidekick · 09/10/2014 17:57

I would go for a jumpsuit instead there are some lovely ones around and far more suited to a black tie event

chickenfajitaswithnachos · 09/10/2014 18:07

I am mid 40's and had a couple 2 years ago when they were newish out also about 20 odd years ago. I like them. I think they can be a good look. I don't really over think my clothes and I'll try pretty much anything on and see if it suits me. As others have said if you think a playsuit will be the right type of thing to wear for the events and you will be comfy then why not?

CointreauVersial · 09/10/2014 18:14

I think it is cute, but I would look absolutely ridiculous in it (wrong side of 45).

Actually, the main reason I don't think that particular playsuit works for the more, er, mature lady is because it is fairly tight, short, and low at the back. Too much flesh on show makes it a little tacky imho (it would show up my bingo wings and crinkly knees an absolute treat).

But some people would get away with it.
