Are red coats naff?

I'd really quite like one instead of my usual black but worry they look naff - certainly an M&S one I bought looks a bit cheap. Would I be better with a brighter cashmere scarf and gloves?

I like red coats. Especially duffle coats with black gloves and scarf

marymcb · 06/10/2014 16:23

I love coloured coats in winter, brightens up the grey days.

I had a lovely burgundy coat a few years ago that always got comments, at the moment my winter coat is green with a fur collar, I love it and can't wait to wear it!

Floisme · 06/10/2014 16:25

I hate black coats. I've just treated myself to a purple one (which is probably my best colour) and I'm now drumming my fingers, waiting for cold weather!

ajandjjmum · 06/10/2014 16:26

DH bought me a red coat last Christmas - he would be very upset to think it might be naff! Grin

SunnyL · 06/10/2014 16:27

I hope not - I got a fab one from Mango last year that I intend on wearing this year

I think scarlet is an older laydees coat

Generally I think coloured coats can look cheap and naffola vair easily

I am also against black unless you are a oil or coal worker, if so they are perfectly acceptable

Fairylea · 06/10/2014 16:44

Totally depends on the style and shade to be honest!

bigTillyMint · 06/10/2014 16:45

I have a lovely red cord coat which I have had loads of compliments on, but even if others didn't like it, it brightens up my day.

RonaldMcDonald · 06/10/2014 16:54

I do like this zara coat but worry about it looking waterfallish or shit on big tits

I've got a bright red duffle coat and I love it! It's warm,it's got a hood and I think its cheerful on a horrible February day. Never thought of red being an old laydee's coat colour- would have thought more toddler but there you are

BikeRunSki · 06/10/2014 17:11

There's a scene in Legally Blonde, where Reese Witherspoon runs up Capitol Hill steps in a red coat, with everyone else running down in black. I love that scene.

I had a red "smart" coat. Now I have a red duffle coat, and a purpley/blue smart coat, a deep purple skiing jacket and a turquoise cagoule. Nothing like a bright outer garment (I also have a high vis yellow jacket, but that's different).

OneLittleLady · 06/10/2014 17:16

I've got a red tench coat with black piping and I love it. I don't think it's naff at all and I often get complimented on it

Floisme · 06/10/2014 17:18

There is something about wearing colour on a wintry day that just cheers you right up. But then I am an older laydee. I even wear purple, although no red hat as yet Grin

LeoandBoosmum · 06/10/2014 17:25

My mum has a long, belted expensive red wool coat by Ted Baker and I think she's going to end up Ebaying it.. She has literally worn it twice (since buying about 2 years back) and it's beautiful but she's just not daring enough to wear it, even though she loves it! I like the idea but I do think you have to be pretty confident to carry a red coat off with aplomb!

MarysDressSways1 · 06/10/2014 17:28

I've got a dark red duffle coat (slightly flared skirt) and I LOVE it.

katiegee · 06/10/2014 18:02

I love red coats! I'm on the lookout for one myself :) I treated myself to a red duffle coat when I was a student and I literally wore until it was falling apart... I'm not exaggerating when I say my mum, sister and friends staged an intervention last year to tell me it was time to buy a new coat!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 06/10/2014 18:09

I used to have a gorgeous bright red winter coat, was about hip length, fitted, with cut buttons in the centre and sleeves that gradually puffed out towards the fitted cuff. Was so cute although when the now ex was asked for his opinion it was 'it's fine if you want to be noticed'. He was a miserable sod though.

Nowadays, I find it harder to find a nice red coat as a lot of them around do look a bit old lady. In a wool coat it's easier but never ever go for a red waterproof, then you WILL look like an oap from behind!

bikermouse1 · 06/10/2014 18:16

In a Brit winter- all monochrome sky and streets, Wot's with all these drear brown/black grey colours we have forced on us? hardly stuff to lift our spirits.

Bright winter colours are the way to go, I reckon.

And now my search is on to find them.

SantanaLopez · 06/10/2014 18:18

I love red coats but I think they have to be expensive, cheap red looks terrible.

bikermouse1 · 06/10/2014 18:19

"A red waterproof"...like pac-a-Mac, those that come with a handy pleated hat?

WOW!

wonkylegs · 06/10/2014 18:21

I have a lovely red wool coat that I always get loads of compliments on (& I daren't tell anybody it comes from a supermarket end of sale rack so I got it for £10 years ago & it's still going strong)

OnlyLovers · 06/10/2014 18:22

It's never occurred to me that you have to be daring or confident to wear a red coat! I've had a couple. Were people looking askance at me the whole time?

I would never call it an old-lady colour either although it can invoke Don't Look Now.

Momagain1 · 06/10/2014 18:26

RonaldM: if scarlet is an older laydees coat and coloured coats can look 'cheap and naffola vair easily' and you are also against black coats...

WTH is acceptable?

oP: the cheap look of the red coat you bought surely does not affect every red coat! I cant wear red, but I am on the hunt for an orange coat or jacket. I love orange, and the fashion cycle seems to turn very slowly for it. I havent seen so many shades of orange in the shops in decades.
