Are red coats naff?

I'd really quite like one instead of my usual black but worry they look naff - certainly an M&S one I bought looks a bit cheap. Would I be better with a brighter cashmere scarf and gloves?

I really don't like bright red coats. Probably because they don't suit my colouring. I guess they can look OK on others but I think you need dark hair and skin that (unlike mine) isn't prone to flushing to carry it off. And agree it has to be a good quality, as cheap bright colours can easily look naff, IMO.

I don't know if it's an age thing - I've never liked bright red.

A dark red/ burgundy coat, on the other hand, is much more wearable.

Moms I'm with you on the Orange. Fab in the summer with a tan, burnt orange in the winter-to die for. Reds don't usually suit my skin tone.

LeoandBoosmum · 06/10/2014 18:48

Ooh, this orange one too!!

I get loads of compliments on my pillarbox-red coat!

legoqueen · 06/10/2014 19:21

I love my boden red cord coat, still going strong after 6 years!

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 06/10/2014 20:29

Massimo Dutti are doing a beautiful burnt orange coat.

I love coloured coats, they are good for the soul on grey days. I have red, orange and fuchsia, as well as beige, grey, navy and black. Love them all. Would love dark green, too.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 06/10/2014 20:29

Or bright blue, that would be good.

herecomesthsun · 06/10/2014 20:38

re red waterproofs, i have this www.notontheshelf.co.uk/197/52/P/Kate+Humble+Waterproof+Trench+Coat.html which I love, I suspect it would be a Parisian OAP wearing this one and I can live with that!

bewleysisters · 06/10/2014 22:25

Nah - classic! (But I know what you mean about how they don't necessarily stand up to close scrutiny as well as darker colours).

Find the racks and racks of black, navy and green a bit of a downer: easy to disappear into the gloom of dark nights in these?

pigleychez · 06/10/2014 22:45

I have this... No idea if its naff or not but Its waterproof so keeps me dry on the school run!

My thicker winter coat is a Navy blue. Love abit of colour as opposed to just black.

I like a red coat from mid nov to Jan 1st.

RonaldMcDonald · 06/10/2014 23:22

Moma

All the greys
Navy
Light Cream through to caramel
Tweeds
Checks
Brown if you must

Momagain1 · 06/10/2014 23:30

Thanks for the orange coat leads!

ronaldM: i find those very boring and old laydee! I vote day brightening colors, or sober black. i cant wear creams and whites, no, I am the one that will always manage to sit in or brush against something and get a big, mark. Always greasy and unwashable. Tweed can be nice though, I had one years ago that was a black and white, with bits of crayola bright colors. i think my daughter nabbedit when I finally decided I would never fit it again.

chemenger · 07/10/2014 08:16

I think I will go for Ronaldm's palette when I am a bit older (in my 50's now), that's what the older Morningside ladies wear here in Edinburgh. Live a little, Ronald rather than fading into the background in your neutrals! I have a red wool coat from Jaeger and I can't wait for it to be cold enough for it. I don't think it looks cheap, it certainly doesn't feel cheap! I think that maybe we wear more colours in the north where there is less light in winter, I notice when I'm in London that there are far fewer bright coloured coats than here. Currently I am coveting a BIba coat in purple print with a fur collar (watches Ronald spontaneously combust in horror).

kaykayblue · 07/10/2014 09:10

There was a girl at work a few years ago that had a bright red coat, which she jokingly referred to as her "Chelsea Pensioner" coat.

But I personally think that red coats are lovely. I think you have to be careful to buy a shade of red that actually suits you.

I can't wear scarlet red (although I like the colour), so I am normally on the look out for dark red coats.

As someone else mentioned, I am not a fan of black coats. I have a light grey one, a brown/beige one and only one black one.

coffeenut · 07/10/2014 10:30

Am I odd to find red clothing generally naff and cheap looking?

coffeenut · 07/10/2014 10:30

I'm with Ronald (apart from brown ... )

polyhymnia · 07/10/2014 10:34

coffee - no, you're not alone. I feel the same. But I do think it's a very personal subjective view.

Valsoldknickers · 07/10/2014 13:18

As we are on the subject of red coats can anyone tell me what colour buttons look best on one. I have a Boden short wool coat which has their brown non-descript buttons on it. They just don't look right.

I think buttons also play a part in making something look cheap or naff. Sorry, I don't mean to hijack but I would be very intersted in others' opinions on how to make a red coat look it's best!

Twinklestein · 07/10/2014 13:23

I had a dark red MaxMara winter coat, it got old and I bought a new one but I miss it on dark winter days...

Twinklestein · 07/10/2014 13:24

A navy coat? Are you having a laugh. Never.

currieaddict · 07/10/2014 13:30

this is the red coat I ordered from M&S but it is going back

I have a red coat but it's a blonde's red coat and I'm auburn. It's too santa red. I wish I saw red coats that were a more muted shade of red. Every time I see a red coat it's a superstartlingsanta shade of red.
