Just got soaked in freezing rain on the school run, we walk whatever the weather. I would like the best warmest coat possible for £50 ish...
I am tall so it needs to be long, I like those puffa/padded types, is ski wear the way forward?

thank you

I have this and it's fab Smile

If you could stretch your budget, Lands End have some Squall Coats at £100, which might be ideal.

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 06/10/2014 20:23

thank you all - some ideas there!

I have owned one of these coats for 20 years (had had two in that time), I wear it for riding, walking the dog, shopping, school, everything.

Washes really well, not glamorous but I wear it so much, really warm, just because of the length which keeps out the wind/rain/cold.

Sorry, I mis-read your budget!

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 06/10/2014 20:41

now I'm looking at wax jackets; but they are very expensive

Last year I bought a long regatta quilted coat for £30 from The Range. Like this. Super warm and comfortable. Probably not completely waterproof if you were in a downpour for hours but showerproof.

PrivateJourney · 06/10/2014 20:57

Having bought £50 coats for years, I would rather go without than buy another one. Three years ago I bought this Berghaus one or the version of it that was available then.

It makes me so happy, warm, dry, comfortable, lightweight and still looks like new, despite having been worn for a proper outdoor lifestyle for 3 years

Methe · 06/10/2014 21:15

Would you really go without a coat than wear a £50 one? Truly?

Maybe chaffinch should freeze for 3 years until she has saved up.

PrivateJourney · 06/10/2014 21:25

No Methe but id make do with an old one rather than waste money on a new one that wasn't up to the job. Im guessing op does own a coat

Hopefully · 06/10/2014 21:39

I wouldn't recommend going without, but I would say that the dirt cheap couple of parkas I have from Boohoo and ASOS are every bit as good as £50-75 coats I've had in the past. I don't think you start getting proper waterproof fabrics and seams until you're spending £100+ anymore, sadly Sad. I need to get a decent waterproof this winter and keep baulking at the cost.

LightastheBreeze · 06/10/2014 21:41

Target Dry have some long waterproof coats and parkas.

Recommend Merrell Ellenwood, though cheapest price is about £120.

Also try TK Maxx for a variety of ski jackets.

pigleychez · 06/10/2014 23:26

I can recommend this Target dry coat I have it in Indigo Blue. Kept me dry in many a downpour!

I used to have a Lands end Down filled coat but found it almost too bulky and hot!

Momagain1 · 06/10/2014 23:32

Lands End, in the US anyway, is a very good quality, should last you ages.

beavington · 06/10/2014 23:42

How warm is the target dry georgia parka pigley? Sick of choosing between being warm and wet or cold and dry. Would like a coat that can do both!

beavington · 06/10/2014 23:44

I hate how the description says it will keep you warm on the next school run! Puts me off buying it

Dancergirl · 07/10/2014 00:01

alfie I LOVE that Top Shop one! Is it really warm?

I don't need any more coats/jackets at the moment but I want it!

CaminanteNoHayCamino · 07/10/2014 00:39

JamaicanMeCrazy, how warm is that lands end coat and what is the fit like? I like the look of it. Which colour did you get? TIA.

I would look on ebay at that budget

LightastheBreeze · 07/10/2014 10:37

Merrell Havens in limited colours and sizes are available for £69.99 in Gaynor Sports and £72 in Field and Trek.

These have been recommended on here a lot in the past.

Cocolepew · 07/10/2014 10:52

No use now, but keep and eye out for Lands End sale. A couple of years ago I got a white, hooded ski coat for £19, over £100 off. It even has a,sesnor in it in case I get buried in an avalanche Grin

Cocolepew · 07/10/2014 10:53

Sensor Blush

Try Tesco, I have a long, fishtail waterproof parka from there and its great.

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 07/10/2014 13:21

avalanche sensor! how cool is that!
