Hair maintenance and no money

What do you do about your hair when you're skint?

I recently got mine cut back into a bob for my return to work after mat leave - i had just let it grow into a long mess when i was at home. Six weeks later and it really needs cutting again; but if I go to get it cut that blows a big chunk off my budget for personal spends over the month.

I need it cut every six weeks to keep the shape, so thats money coming out of every monthly cheque for a haircut - I cant afford that.

but i want nice hair!

If your brave you could try a local hairdressing college. The one closest to me only charges £5 for a cut and blow dry and there is always a tutor nearby to oversee the trainee's work to do any touch ups if the cut isn't quite right.

anyoldname76 · 30/09/2014 17:56

I agree, go to your local college, ive had mine cut and coloured for the fraction of the cost at a salon. The trainee was very professional and there was also a tutor on hand. But to be honest he did a brilliant job Smile

Mr Toppers have always done right by me... or keep an eye out for Groupon cuts in your local area ?

minkah · 30/09/2014 18:11

Buy a Crea Clip and DIY. Loads of tutorials on YouTube.

MisForMumNotMaid · 30/09/2014 18:19

I use a lady at my local indoor market its £8 and i get the best no fuss cut I've ever had. No glass of wine, triple wash and extra for conditioner, no product sales at the end of the cut.

Its what would you like? Then cut, then inspect and off you go.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 30/09/2014 19:14

How much does your haircut cost? I have a wet cut (wash my hair at home before I go) at the same time as my elder two children and it costs me £15 for all 3 of us...I definitely don't need it doing any more often that 8 weeks or so, occasionally my fringe needs trimming near the end of the 8 weeks but I'm faily competent at doing it myself so I just take a tiny bit off to tide me over until my next appt.

Rosedust · 30/09/2014 19:18

In the first few months after having my ds, I used my grandma's hairdresser Smile. She came to my house and only charged £5!

Someone like that could be good for you?

SirChenjin · 30/09/2014 19:21

Another vote for the local college - mine charges £12 for a cut and blow dry, and I've had some of the best cuts ever there. It's only the 2nd and 3rd year students who cut (most of them are already working as haidressers and are back at college for upskilling in colour etc) and are closely supervised by the lecturers.

Varya · 30/09/2014 19:24

£22.50 for cut and colour at my hairdressers home every five weeks. May have to abandon this as my job ends on Friday.

SirChenjin · 30/09/2014 19:30

Wow - just had a look at Crea Clips. I'm getting me one of those - they look brilliant Smile

Hippychickster · 30/09/2014 23:16

Where do you get the crea clips? I can't find any in the uk, even on eBay and amazon.

FamiliesShareGerms · 30/09/2014 23:20

Cut your own hair? Invest in decent scissors and look at some online tutorials

im in dublin - so everything is a total rip off! Its around 50euro for Peter Marks - which is a chain of hairdressers , not v upmarket.

i dont think id have the confidence to cut my own hair but will def look into a college

You can buy them direct from crea products uk. Just google it and the website will come up.

i think growing it a bit longer is the best idea officer, so I can tie it back it needs be. the bob i had looked lovely for a couple of weeks but loses its shape so quickly

it wouldnt, I did have it similarish to that before ; fringe maintenance is tricky - I was cutting it myself and though it looked OK, not sure everyone else wouldve agreed.

think im going to go for that - thanks for the inspiration officer and if I dont look that pretty when im done ill hold you responsible!

OP posts:
JADS · 01/10/2014 11:33

Definitely grow it. You can normally get your fringe trimmed for free in between
Cuts to make it last longer.

If you have a bit of time, walk ins and certain days can be cheaper. Students can take a long time so may not be great if you are short of time.

Alternatively my haircuts come out of joint money. I cut both dh and ds hair with clippers and argued that it wasn't fair I had to pay for a haircut as dh could not do mine!

daisygatsby · 01/10/2014 11:37

JADS - excellent negotiating skills with your DH !

I know the hairdressers always say to call in if you want a fringe trim, but I never do, I just feel a bit cheeky or something
