Why do skinny jeans look wierd on me but ok on everybody else?

I don't get it! I'm quite sporty & fit so not overweight. Am 5ft 10 and a size 12, so generally look ok in most things. According to all the 'rules' I should look ok in skinny jeans, but I really don't!

If I turn them up to wear cropped in the summer, or wear with knee high boots, they look ok-ish. But if I try to wear them long with ankle boots or shoes I look all out of proportion and just not right. I do have quite big feet (8's) so could that be why? In just about any other clothes I look fine but in skinny jeans I suddenly have wierd legs, a big arse and look all top heavy - where am I going wrong?

I think they look good on very few people (certainly not me). Have always thought this but for years they have been the holy grail of jeans.

penguinsaresmall · 28/09/2014 16:21

magicdragon where do the jeans go where your boots start then? Do they tuck in or go over?

That's the wierd thing tho moonface - I'm not a size 8, but I'm a 12 and 5 ft 10 so not exactly big. And I'm in proportion; I look fine in anything else but crap in skinny jeans Confused

I look hideous in them and I'm a size 8, they make my thighs look huge.
Straight cut work much better on me, I am currently wearing a pair with flat silver t bars, floral cami and a cropped cardi.

Sweetasstevia · 28/09/2014 16:37

I've never been brave enough to try skinny jeans but Boden Boyfriend Jeans make my legs look like carrots Shock

picnicbasketcase · 28/09/2014 17:17

I have never tried a pair on, as they look incredibly uncomfortable and I quite often see very large women in them and wonder what they're thinking, so I assume if I wore them others would think the same of me, even though I'm not that massive.

FeckTheMagicDragon · 29/09/2014 00:27

I'm old fashioned, so they go over - I've never got the hang of tucking them in. I have tried, but they just look messy. The jeans leg length makes an awful lot of difference.

coffeenut · 29/09/2014 05:21

I am a size 10 but have proportionately large thighs.

I can look good in skinnies but only in very particular types. I've noticed that:

leg length makes a lot of difference - I need them sitting exactly right.

tightness makes a lot of difference (super skinnies are out for me but the more "relaxed" skinnies which are a tiny bit looser at the ankle in particular are great)

if i put on any weight they look shite, full stop.

Getafuckingjob · 29/09/2014 05:34

I only wear them with knee high boots, I look ridiculous otherwise.

LightastheBreeze · 29/09/2014 07:11

I'm 5'10" and size 12-14 and also look awful in skinny jeans, I'm not pear shaped and still look awful, I am 33 inside leg. The best I have found are Boden and Per Una straight leg jeans for a most flattering fit.

Bunbaker · 29/09/2014 07:18

I am pear shaped as well, with a 12" difference between waist and hips. Skinnies are a complete no on me.

I wear slim cut straight jeans and they are far more flattering. I currently own a pair from Sainsburys and a pair of demi curve Levis, and feel that I can face the world in them.

mummybare · 29/09/2014 07:29

I can wear skinnies too - 5'8", size 12, but I have skinny hips so maybe that helps? I go for high waisted to prevent muffin top as I tend to carry weight round my tummy.

Greengardenpixie · 29/09/2014 08:11

I wear what I suit. Diesel slim bootleg for me. so flsttering. Also next cord bootlegs ate my new favourite. I have them in grey, plum, blue and black. I have skinnies but dont like them much. I dont wear them now but I do think the length of top makes such a difference to how they look. Skinnies with a long top can look fine. I just dont find them comfy.

kaykayblue · 29/09/2014 09:05

I think in order to look good in skinny jeans, you have to have reasonably narrow hips, and not carry your weight on your legs/hips.

Aside from the rakes, the girls I know who look best in skinnies are actually apple shapes, where they carry their weight on their torso.

I don't have good legs. Never have done, never will! I look much better in straight leg jeans.

For the person who asked what shoes to wear with them:

Ballet flats. You can get nice ones from posh shops, or bog standard ones from New Look. To be honest, you can wear most shoes with them. But for the love of god, if you wear ankle boots (or boots in general I guess) DON'T tuck the tops UNDER your jeans. It looks awful. Just do them up over the tops of the jeans.

Greengardenpixie · 29/09/2014 09:10

Think the secret of skinnies is to be tall with long legs and slim thighs..boohoo..that will never be me :(

MrsPMT · 29/09/2014 14:00

I think I look good in skinnies, but not superskinnies. I also like high waisted ones.

Slim/skinny legs make them look best, IMO, a bit of a thigh gap (not necessarily the massive total thigh gap that young-uns Grin go for but a slight gap at least).

oreocookiecake · 29/09/2014 14:21

Hmm, I'm not sure about skinnies only looking good on skinny hipped ladies. I am one of those ladies and skinnies have never looked good on me! Well, until very recently, that is. I was getting really pissed off with always going for the bootcut, so I went into New Look and grabbed a few pairs, but I 99% sure they'd look awful on me, but was very surprised that they actually looked quite nice.

The reason most don't suit me though, is that because I'm narrow in the hip...well, thighs really(I have reasonably curvy hips, but I have a high waist, which is really hard to dress) and I've got quite broad shoulders, I look too top heavy in trousers which are straight up and down.

I'm slim, so most women will tell me I'm lucky, but when it comes to buying trousers which flatter (especially jeans) I find it a bloody nightmare!

But anyway, for those of you who find that skinnies don't flatter you for the same reason as me, get yourself down to New Look!

Browtox · 29/09/2014 14:22

cos with big feet you look like this

Try some Topshop Baxters instead of super tight. Or next Relaxed skinnies, a few sizes down.

Why do skinny jeans look wierd on me but ok on everybody else?
RonaldMcDonald · 29/09/2014 14:24

yy that is me brow

skinny legs, no arse and massive, massive feet

laugh it up.....praying mantis arms also

CalamityKate1 · 29/09/2014 14:24

I think you need well proportioned legs - not necessarily thin - to suit skinnies. My thighs are just a bit too chubby to wear them and I get the dreaded parsnip leg.

I love bootcut, me. I live for the day they come back in.

oreocookiecake · 29/09/2014 14:27

Grin That has really tickled me!

NickiFury · 29/09/2014 14:29

I'm sick to the back teeth of skinny jeans. When will they be OVER?! Seemingly never Sad

Artistic · 30/09/2014 09:10

I have the same problem. With trial & error I've found that skinny jeans look good on 'long' legs if you break them up with tall boots or uggs. Else the person needs really slender hips to carry them off with smaller shoes. It's all about balance - wide hips need chunky shoes to balance them.

penguinsaresmall · 30/09/2014 11:40

I am now the proud owner of some DP skinny kick flares - and they are a 10 rather than my usual 12 so I am embarrassingly pleased with myself.

Do I now need to buy high heeled boots to wear with them? They are so long that you can barely see what I have on my feet at all so maybe I can get away with my normal flatties....
