Ryder cup hospitality- what on earth do I wear?

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 23/09/2014 13:48

Smart, sport casual. Think trousers, white shirt, blazer/jacket and loafers.

TSSDNCOP · 23/09/2014 13:49

Unless you're outside. In which case you needed to look like a trawlerman at the Open in sandwich. I have never, ever been so wet.

MissMilbanke · 23/09/2014 13:50

layers, something warm waterproof as you will be in and out of the tent

flat shoes

EmilyGilmore · 23/09/2014 13:55

Why do you want to watch people play golf?

MissMilbanke · 23/09/2014 13:59

Its for the free champs Emily !

chemenger · 23/09/2014 14:02

Shoes you can walk round a golf course on in comfort - waterproof and non-slip. Strangely golf shoes are ideal (although mine never recovered from the mud at the last Ryder Cup). Then layers, ending with waterproofs. This is unless you simply intend to stay in the hospitality tent, but then you would miss the atmosphere on the course which is electric.

Emily don't knock it until you've tried it, the Ryder Cup is the only sporting event I am in the least bit interested in attending and the last one, despite the deep mud, was brilliant. Going on Friday, can't wait!

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 23/09/2014 14:07

ok- so no rules about no jeans etc?

Emily it's pretty much about the free bar and 2 nights child free in a 5* hotel but also DP is really into golf so this has gotten me serious brownie points

Jealous! We tried for the ballot for tickets but not successful. Agree that if you're out watching the golf that you need layers, waterproofs and golf shoes. If you're just partaking of the free booze then Something smart-casual. Enjoy!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/09/2014 14:17

Do not wear jeans! Spectators are (more or less) expected to conform to the same rules re dress as the golfers themselves. These are usually things like:

  • no denim
  • no cargo trousers or similar, e.g. no big pockets on the outside; no camouflage
  • mens' shirts must have collars
  • for ladies, a shirt must have either sleeves or a collar or both
  • shorts must be no shorter than a couple of inches above the knee
  • no trainers (sometimes)

Here, this is from the FAQ on the Gleneagles website - the Ryder Cup section:

What is the weather like in Scotland? What clothing will I need?

A holiday in Scotland can surprise you. So can our weather. Some parts of Scotland have lower annual rainfall than Sydney and Barcelona but it is unpredictable and subject to change so we encourage visitors to come prepared. We recommend packing a woolen sweater, a set of waterproofs, waterproof shoes and an umbrella. If you are planning on playing golf it is also worth remembering that many clubs operate a dress code where jeans, collarless shirts and trainers are not permitted.

theladylovescupcakes · 23/09/2014 14:24

Just found this from the Gleneagles golf club site-

What is the dress code for the golf courses?
Comfort and informality is the theme, although we would prefer you not to wear jeans or jogging trousers

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 23/09/2014 14:29

sounds like i need to buy some trousers then... was hoping i'd get away with cream/coloured jeans :(

Having followed a professional golfer (family member) on many occasions, i can tell you that in theory, anything goes. I have seen 6 inch stilettos and bodycon mini dresses, all the way to cut off jeans and tank tops - and that is in the players lounge. However, sensible smart casual is your best bet. I have usually followed in hot steamy Washington DC, North Carolina-type weather, but as you are talking UK Ryder cup, I would probably go for nice pair of casual trousers, nice shirt and jacket or cardigan ensemble, with comfortable slip on shoes and a back up of rain jacket, gloves, umbrella and hat, with rain boots. If you want to look like you know what you are doing, you can wear actual golf shoes - generally, i think that looks affected and weird, but other may say it is sensible. Do not forget sunscreen for your face - with the possible sunshine and wind combination, it can mean sunburn very quickly!

Also, just to be aware, many courses do not allow mobile phones or cameras on actual competition days, although they will allow them to the practice and pro-am days.

spamm · 23/09/2014 14:53

In my experience, cream/ colored jeans will be fine. But have a back up for the cream jeans, in case of mud if the weather is bad. Google "spectators ryder cup" and look at the images - you will see that they wear all sorts of things including plus fours with the Union Jack on...

theladylovescupcakes · 23/09/2014 15:06

IMO if jeans were strictly verboten then they'd say so. Cream/coloured jeans will be fine. I'm sure some of the fashions will be "out there" anyway...!

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 23/09/2014 15:51

So non-blue jeans, top, barbour style jacket and boots?

OP posts:
HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/09/2014 16:47

I think non-blue jeans will be fine. I agree with thelady - they would tell you if they thought it was a big deal!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/09/2014 16:49

BTW OP, I am very very Envy

We will be watching this weekend! DH is a golf addict and I'm afraid it has rubbed off on me!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 23/09/2014 16:49

spamm I would love to know who your family member is!

chemenger · 23/09/2014 17:01

I would agree there is no issue with non-blue jeans for out on the course. It might depend how posh your hospitality is though?

If you are going on Saturday or Sunday I will report back on what was being worn on Friday - if you are watching on TV on Friday I will be the one in the "weird and affected" golf shoes, which should narrow it to around half the crowd. I think there will probably be much greater fashion faux pas around!

Crutchlow35 · 23/09/2014 18:02

Have fun! It's causing chaos round these parts!

spamm · 23/09/2014 18:04

Chemenger - sorry. Golf shoes for people who do not play golf is strange IMO. I was with somebody this summer who wore golf shoes and a simple golf outfit, and they looked great. But golf shoes with a dress, for example, looks weird to me. I am a non-golfer, so I do not get it. I did not mean to offend - so please accept Flowers as an apology!

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 24/09/2014 12:46

I'm there friday, sat and sun. Will keep my eyes peeled for you chemenger

OP posts:
chemenger · 25/09/2014 10:10

Every day! How lucky are you, gin. I can't wait.

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 25/09/2014 11:16

I'm very excited! DP is beside himself- he tried everything to get a ticket then this landed on me at te start of the week, it's made his year.
