Tunics/short dresses with leggings - is this now a fashion faux pas?

I hope not. And if so, what's the alternative?

(Prompted by someone on the Vogue thread saying leggings were 'so 2004'.)

I am following this thread :-) currently wearing leggings and dress.

Even if they are so 2004 I suspect I will keep wearing them as they are very comfy

dottytablecloth · 21/09/2014 13:38

I think it is unfortunately! I'm 7 months pregnant and haven't given in to leggings (yet) but will have to soon!

Leggings do look quite frumpy these days, I think.

dottytablecloth · 21/09/2014 13:40

I think you either need to wear a long enough dress that you can go bare legged or opaque tights if your dress is short.

SisterNancySinatra · 21/09/2014 13:40

Dresses or tunics with leggings look comfortable and smart/casual , they don't look the height of fashion or young and trendy .

Fairylea · 21/09/2014 13:42

If you replace the leggings with skinny jeans and the tunics with longer length oversized t shirts and fluffy cardigans that's kind of an update Grin

ScottishInSwitzerland · 21/09/2014 13:44

That's a good point sisternancy I guess it depends what you're aiming for with your 'look'

burnishedsilver · 21/09/2014 15:50

I wouldn't go so far as to say faux pas but is definitely dated.

40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 15:52

'they don't look the height of fashion or young and trendy'
Well that's fine by me. I'm not young or a slave to fashion but I don't want to be a decade behind either!

I can't find jeans to fit, hence the leggings option. I like the Toast/unstructured dress type look rather than clinched at the waist, with a pair of flats or trainers if I'm walking far. I'm not in London, if that makes a difference.

Not sure I could carry off the fluffy cardigan at my age. Might look like a bed jacket.

PinkSquash · 21/09/2014 15:53

It is dated and potentially frumpsville, but I can't find dresses long enough for me to wear bare legged...

Pipbin · 21/09/2014 15:55

I have almost nothing but dresses / tunics over leggings. I like it and I care not.
If it is such a fashion shocker then why do shops still sell it?

ElephantsNeverForgive · 21/09/2014 15:59

Personally, they are such a good option when jeans aren't smart enough, I'm sticking to it.

I don't really have the legs for tights and above the knee dresses and I find court shoes agony.

Leggings and boots are so much more me.

A longer dress is either very frumpy or too smart.

Really nice mid calf winter dresses are way beyond a SAHM budget for the odd meeting.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 21/09/2014 16:02

I was late to the leggings party. I only started wearing them post-pregnancy as I found there's not much that's comfier and more practical to wear when you spend most of your day crawling around on the floor, bent over while picking babies or things up all the time or even just for cuddles and naps during the day. I'm pregnant again and leggings are a staple part of my wardrobe.

I also make the faux pas of wearing boot cut jeans but I can't wear skinny jeans without my legs going numb and getting pins and needles. I just don't understand suffering for the sake of fashion!

KoalaDownUnder · 21/09/2014 16:15

I've seen this debate on here before, and I'm still confused. Is it the leggings that are the problem, in which case just substitute skinny jeans for leggings?

What about a long top (as in, definitely bum-covering) with leggings and calf-length boots?

40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 16:25

I definitely can't do boots with leggings. I'd look like golf club.

OP posts:
40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 16:27

A golf club.

PrincessOfChina · 21/09/2014 16:27

Leggings are not, and have never been, "smart casual". They are casual, bordering on loungewear.

Branleuse · 21/09/2014 16:28

Itll never go out of fashion, but if it worries you, dont wear it

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 21/09/2014 16:30

Um, who said that on the Vogue thread? I've done a ctrl-F for the word "legging" and no one has said anything of the sort.

Apologies if I am missing something!

For the record, I don't own any leggings but I think it probably depends on the leggings, the wearer and the occasion.

KoalaDownUnder · 21/09/2014 16:37

Wait, how would you look like a golf club? Shock Grin

40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 16:39

Sorry, just checked, it wasn't Vogue, it was the one asking to style a dress for a wedding.

OP posts:
40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 16:41

Golf club = big clumpy bit at the bottom with a stick pointing skywards.

OP posts:
40SomethingFabulouslyClueless · 21/09/2014 16:42

Well, a golf club with a bum and tum sticking out.

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/09/2014 16:49

I don't like dresses and leggings (I don't really wear dresses anyway) but tunic + legging is fine as long as it's buttock covering

msfreud · 21/09/2014 20:23

Just don't wear footless tights as leggings with a short top. Occasionally see this on the escalators at tube stations and having your knickers visible through said footless tights is not a good look.

PiratePanda · 21/09/2014 20:26

Hallelujah if it's really true that leggings are on the way out. They are monumentally unflattering.

Opaque tights apparently are back in this winter. I'd go with that.
