Is this coat frumpy?

I'm under 5 foot (although a size 14 thanks to comedy 30G norks) and struggle to find coats that fit my chest but don't swamp me so I really only have the option of petite ranges. I quite like the look of this even though I have never had a patterned coat before but not sure if it's a bit frumpy? It's got that slightly 60ish vibe going on which is quite fashionable at the moment but might look really dated by next year? Opinions please!

I would not buy that coat unless I really loved it. It will date. And as you say it may be frumpy.

Go for a solid colour not plaid.

Atavistic · 18/09/2014 14:10

I can't imagine a loud pattern over an ample chest ever being a good idea. A solid colour would be much more advisable Smile

pinkfrocks · 18/09/2014 14:11

Yes.
Like the style but not the loud check.
I'd imagine seeing it on a 70+ person as a 'car coat'.

nickEcave · 18/09/2014 14:15

OK, I take on board the point about the loud pattern. Think I might go for this instead

Asos one is lovely

HolgerDanske · 18/09/2014 14:21

Yes it is. And I am very tolerant of granny chic if you can carry it off nicely.

The second option is much nicer.

HolgerDanske · 18/09/2014 14:22

And you could always get a plaid scarf instead...

HolgerDanske · 18/09/2014 14:22

Plaid, check, hmmm I am not sure what the correct term is Smile

KoalaDownUnder · 18/09/2014 14:23

First one is frumpy (but I hade tartan).

Asos one is really nice!

Missunreasonable · 18/09/2014 14:24

Both options look a bit boxy and shapeless.

Atavistic · 18/09/2014 14:24

Would you consider a belted coat which flares out? My 5 foot friend, with large boobs always wears this style, and she looks great- she's a 12/14.
I'm not suggesting black, though.

HolgerDanske · 18/09/2014 14:26

Well yes but that's quite trendy at the moment and doesn't necessarily make them frumpy..

HolgerDanske · 18/09/2014 14:26

(In reference to boxy and shapeless)

Iamcuriousyellow · 18/09/2014 14:29

Pepperberry have some lovely coats for the breastically talented - I got my daughter one and she looks amazing in it, because it's not huge on her waist.

HumphreyCobbler · 18/09/2014 14:31

That coat is a good shape if you have large boobs imo.

Thumbwitch · 18/09/2014 14:33

Coat 1 = not necessarily frumpy but yes, the pattern will date and I wouldn't buy it because of that - I like to get a few years out of my coats!
Coat 2 = slobby to start with, will look like a bag lady's in no time. I had a nice wool coat that didn't look slobby to start with, but it didn't take long for it to start looking slobby - it never quite made it to bag lady status, but that one starts halfway down that route, IMO!
Coat 3 (from Atavistic) looks like it has a fair bit of spare material (the flare) when it's done up and belted, but could look good, depending on your shape. :)

noddyholder · 18/09/2014 14:36

I like boxy but the check with big boobs would make me look like Hattie Jacques

nickEcave · 18/09/2014 14:37

Unfortunately I am too short for Pepperberry clothing - even if they fit over the chest the rest of the proportions are all wrong. I quite like the belted Asos coat Atavistic linked to but think it would be too much material over the boob area. The one in my second link is quite unfussy with a deep V which detracts from the boobage!

Thanks for comments and suggestions so far. Have any other petite size 14s bought a nice coat so far this year? I'm 4 foot 11, 30G, size 14 top, 12 bottom. Soft autumn colouring and would prefer camel or kahki/olive - definitely not black. Oh and would prefer a reasonably high wool content. Prepared to pay up to £150.

I like the first one but it WILL date, fast. It will be fun this winter but you'll hate it next year.

The asos one looks nice on the model but as a short person I wouldn't wear it, I don't think short people can get away with that boxy / manly / too big sort of look as we look like the coat just IS too big.

Sorry.

WowserBowser · 18/09/2014 14:43

The first one looks like one you would see in Only Fools and Horses. But i love the outfits (especially Trigger's) so i'm conflicted Confused

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 18/09/2014 14:50

If you go for asos one try code VFNO2014 for 20 per cent off before tomorrow morning. It's a code from Spanish website but just worked for me on UK site. Think it's on all full price asos label but might work for other stuff too.

museumum · 18/09/2014 14:54

Everything in my usual 'petite' shops is double-breasted. Sorry, not great with a large bust.
This one at least is nipped in at the waist and might work if you don't do up the top button and wear it as a V neck with a scarf???

Contraryish · 18/09/2014 14:56

OK, I'm pretty similar to you. 5 foot nothing, 32 H and a 12/14 depending on brands. I wouldn't go with the tartan as I think it would wear me, rather than the other way around! I like the belted style Atavistic links to above, I have similar black Pepperberry one from way back which has been my standby for years.

None of which is actually helping you, I guess ...

nickEcave · 18/09/2014 14:59

Thanks green! I think I'll give the second Asos one a go. It is possibly a bit on the boxy side but I had a coat that length and a similar style in the past and it looked OK. I think the deep V on the neck helps to give a bit of shape.
