My Mother says I look ghastly in Clarks heeled brogues - return or keep?

I bought these Clarks heeled brogues in oxblood.

They're very comfy but I haven't worn them yet so I can still return them!

My mum saw them on me and was horrified, said I they make me look short and fat (which I am, but obviously try to choose clothes that make me look my best!).

Return or keep?

I have a jury of three sons who always make a majority vote

lordnoobson · 17/09/2014 06:58

Just read - chunky calves. Step away from the shoes

OwlCapone · 17/09/2014 07:02

No one can tell you whether you look ghastly in the shoes with seeing you in them. The positive comments on this thread are only about the shoes themselves, not what you look like in them. They may not suit you.

EugenesAxe · 17/09/2014 07:12

Yes, I'm not that enamoured with them anyway, but have to agree, they probably would only work if you were tall and preferably slim.

Someone posted about 'the rules' for skinny jeans and ankle boots the other day... I followed off the train on Monday a girl wearing exactly that (hers were flat, suede and close fitting to the foot) and she looked amazing, but she was like Goldberry: 'slender as the willow wand' and about 6'. I think this style would have to be on a similar shape to work. I would listen and go shopping with her instead to find something you like that works!

VillaVillekulla · 17/09/2014 09:06

I really like them OP. I saw them in Clarks the other day and loved the look of them but didn't bother trying them on because they looked too high for me (not great with heels higher than 5cm). If I could walk in them I would definitely wear them. With opaque black tights and a smart work dress or skirt. Maybe with skinny black trousers.

I don't get how they'd make anyone look fat or short Confused. They're high heels. Surely high heels make you look thinner and taller?

Julius02 · 17/09/2014 09:16

I love them. I used to have a pair similar a few years ago which I wore to work with an ankle length black skirt and fitted jacket. Oh how I loved that outfit..... But I was a size 12 then too :-(

noddyholder · 17/09/2014 09:20

I like them maybe with ankle length slim trousers fine socks and a big jumper

BestIsWest · 17/09/2014 09:36

I like them a lot. I had very similar in 1979 as my school shoes. But I was tall and willowy and 17 then. I think they would look lovely with opaques and a woolly dress.

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 17/09/2014 09:41

i like a brogue, and versions of the brogue. Yet don't like the heel shape for some reason, and i think they would look awful on me, as much as i like the idea.
I am of dumpyness, not very tall. I like a clumpy look to offset iyswim.

onelastfling · 17/09/2014 09:46

OP I love them. They are really nice.
She probably doesn't like them, because when she was your age, only older women wore them. But fashions change and get updated.

My mother was shocked when I bought an A line skirt (which was/sort of still is in at the time)
You can't wear that - it's so frumpy! Shock

Yes I can - Keep up you silly moo

hellsbellsmelons · 17/09/2014 10:45

I like them too but I know they wouldn't suit me.
If you like them and can team them with things that suit then no reason why you shouldn't keep them!

BuildersTea · 17/09/2014 11:11

So far I've only worn them with a short floral tea dress & opaque tights. Will wear them with the same again & woolly tights or with a tweed mini.

BestIsWest · 17/09/2014 11:15

Yes to tweed. They would look fab with that.

Coristarz · 17/09/2014 11:19

Do you like them? Are they comfy, do you feel good in them? If yes, then keep them!

TheRealMaryMillington · 17/09/2014 11:20

Sorry I'm with your mother.
I like the idea of the shoes but these ones are a bit not quite right.

Take them back and get a pair like bunny's
I don;t see how they could make you look short and fat though, unless you are, and they are too tight for your feet

madamemuddle · 17/09/2014 11:34

I like them but if you've got chunky calves I would imagine they don't look great with a skirt.

Keep them if you like them. Your Mum probably wants you to wear stilletoes...

RonaldMcDonald · 17/09/2014 11:36

bunny

where are those shoes from???!!??

I like them btw

minkah · 17/09/2014 12:46

I think your ma is on your side.

TSSDNCOP · 17/09/2014 12:52

I had those when I was 14 for school. That was 32 years ago.

specialsubject · 17/09/2014 13:17

they're very high so special occasions only, otherwise you stuff up tendons, posture etc etc.

but if you like them and they don't hurt, keep them. Not sure how shoes could make you look short or fat. Shoes are coverings for feet.

McGlashan · 17/09/2014 13:44

With trousers they would be lovely. I am chunky of calf and I tried similar on while wearing skirt. It was not pretty.

PippiL · 17/09/2014 17:32

They are lovely.

I cannot stand it when I see comments that certain items of clothing only suit tall skinny people without any kind of shape to them.

I have shapely calves (ie not ones like lollipop sticks) and I would wear them if I didn't have a bad ankle.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/09/2014 17:41

I agree PippiL.

I don't think 7.5cm is that high - that's my comfy everyday height.

StripyBanana · 17/09/2014 18:28

That's a fairly impressive everyday height!!
I'd be frightened of knackering my ankles.

MrsCampbellBlack · 17/09/2014 18:40

Have just measured today's shoes - 8 cm stiletto heel. But I don't walk far as drive to school and work.
